A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

It is with immense pleasure that I welcome you to The Complete His­tory ofAmerica (abridged). Two years ago, I thought I had bitten off morethan I could chew in directing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare(abridged), despite the fact that our audition process had produced the bestthree actors for the demanding roles outside of the West End of London.The script was challenging, the props and costumes so complicated that werequired three back-stage workers for each actor, and real experts on light­ing and sound, not to mention the best stage manager in the business.

Surely The Complete History ~fAmerica (abridged) would be mucheasier? Hah! What a joke! Thankfully, the same three actors (Chris, Danand Malcolm) were willing and able .to adopt these new roles, my producerand co-director, Sue Howe, was there beside me every step of the way, andmy stalwart props team of Ruth, Judy, Lisa, Fiona and Regina threw them­selves into the task with such willingness I knew I could leave everythingin their capable hands. With Valerie on lights, Marjorie and Olivia doingthe make-up, and Colin handling the sounds, I fIrmly believe I have the bestteam ever- and it goes without saying that my adored husband, Peter, ishere as stage manager, working his usual magic to ensure that the showgoes off without a hitch.

As the show progresses, I am sure you will realise that it takes such ateam to pull something like this off. The actors are only as good as the sup­port they get from behind the scenes so, even though you will rarely seeany of our crew, everyone is working at the same frenetic pace as the threebrilliant guys on stage.

Thank you, each and every one of you. And, of course, thank you­our audience-for once again supporting our endeavours as we hopefullymanage to totally confuse you with fIve hundred years of real and fictitiousevents in the good old U. S. of A!

THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF AMERICA (abridged) was originallyproduced and performed by the Reduced Shakespeare Company. It had itsfirst public performance on 18 March 1993 at the Stewart Theatre at NOlthCarolina State University. Later that year it was performed at the AmericanRepertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Lincoln Center«Serious Fun" Festival in New York City, and the Montreal "Just forLaughs" Festival. With one cast change, the play had extended runs at theKennedy Center in Washington, DC, in the summers of 1994 and 1995.With two cast changes, the play opened at the Criterion Theatre in Lon­don's West End in 1996 where, as of the date of this programme, it was stillrunnmg.

This role is portrayed to perfection by Malcolm Ellis. Although difficult to emulate,we feel that Malcolm truly brings to life the character of Malcolm, but in a totally newand refreshing way. His instant mastery of both the accordion and the slide whistlehas not ceased to amaze us. When not cavorting on "the boards" as either a pseudo­Shakespearean or attempting to convince the audience he is an American, Malcolmlives in serene Savannah with his wife Angie and daughter Emma, along with a cat ortwo, and works for the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority.

CHRiS MaNN

In the early stages of rehearsal, Chris had a little trouble coming to grips with the de­manding characterization of Chris Mann. After a considerable amount of work, in­cluding watching videos of this outstanding actor, Chris slowly but surely developedinto the perfect cI one. Both the Director and Producer are very proud of the way hehas rounded out his part to bring you an utterly believable portrayal of the great ChrisMann. Art teacher at George Hicks High School, Chris and his wife Cora-Ann live inwonderful West Bay with their two sons, Rory and Tom.

Dan has never been one to rest on his laurels and, following successful performancesin "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)" and "Forever Plaid", hewas excited by the challenge that playing Dan Morisseau would bring. Much praisedfor his incredible portrayals ofJuliet and Ophelia in "Shakespeare", Dan felt that therewas much he could offer to "The Complete History of America (abridged)". He hasthrown himself with gusto into this new role and we think you will agree with uswhen we say that nobody could have done the part better. Dan works for PhoenixConstruction, and lives in beautiful Breakers.
