INTRODUCTION

FUN FACT Due to its hundreds of protruding micro-needles, new users often refer to the derma roller as something akin to a medieval torture device. If that’s true, then beauty really is pain. *wink*

Unfolding AgING Skin Why Your Skin May Look Older Than Your Friend’s

You wake up in the morning, still feeling heavy from slumber. You move groggily into the bathroom to wash the sand and the sleep away.

After being snapped awake by the cold rush of water over your sink, you look up at the mirror to see your face. It has been a while since you’ve looked at your own reflection, and I mean really look.

You see lines over your skin that you’ve not seen before; on your forehead, around your eyes.

You turn to the side and look your body up and down. Stretch marks have appeared on your legs and stomach. You even notice cellulite appearing.

AGING SKIN

All of a sudden, you feel weak and older than you really are

It’s a hard pill to swallow. As people grow older, we tend to gather scars on our bodies, like tokens or badges of honor. Some of them have very bad memories attached to them, and some are just unavoidable byproducts of growing up, like acne and wrinkles.

Derma Rolling may be relatively new to the west, but the idea behind it all has been used in ancient Chinese medicine for more than a thousand years. The Chinese believed that puncturing the skin has a highly beneficial effect on the person’s life energy.

So, while modern science does not claim that Derma Rolling has any kind of effect on a person’s “life energy”, western medicine is beginning to understand what the Chinese have known for millennia:

Minor injuries to the outermost layers skin can stimulate the growth and regeneration of new skin cells, which leads to smoother, more elastic skin.

Collagen Basics

Collagen is the main structural protein in our body. It plays an important role in supporting the body’s structure, especially on a body’s tissues, ligaments, and skin.

Generally, our body can produce collagen on its own. That’s evident because whenever we get even a paper cut, it’s

healed within a few days.

Basically, when an injury occurs, the brain puts out signals to your body’s injured area, commanding it to take steps to heal. The body, following instruction, begins its process of producing and launching new collagen protein to 1), act as the body’s natural scaffolding; then 2) to build on itself over time to fill in the spaces.

It will continue that way until the brain recognizes that it is healed. (Hint: the keyword here is “recognizes”)

UNFOLDING AGING SKIN: WHY YOUR SKIN MAY LOOK OLDER THAN YOUR FRIENDS

Myth . . . Most people tend to live with it and are forced to move on. After all, there’s very little we can do about them. We can try to cover them with cosmetics, but that’s about it.

Fact . . . There is a way to remove those scars and unwanted signs of aging. There is a way to rejuvenate your skin, and breath into it a new vibrancy that is never been known by your skin.

A Collagen Deficit Makes Skin Look And Feel Older

Unfortunately, there are cases when the body doesn’t — or simply can’t — produce enough collagen and stops healing itself. Because it stops, no more collagen is being produced.

Lower levels of collagen means that your body’s ability to heal itself is hindered. When it’s hindered, this leads to unwanted wrinkles, stretch marks and scars on your skin.

This halt in production can happen for various reasons, but here are the most common:

• Harmful free radicals have infiltrated and clogged the skin

• Collagen production channels are clogged by dead skin and collagen cells (the brain isn’t getting the signal that there’s a buildup of waste)

• Collagen production sites have been damaged

UNFOLDING AGING SKIN: WHY YOUR SKIN MAY LOOK OLDER THAN YOUR FRIENDS

You’ve likely already experienced the result: the skin loses much of its youth and beauty because it stops healing too early.

Basically, without collagen, our body’s ability to support itself is lost.

Reverse Aging: the Need to Grow New Collagen On the flip side increased levels of collagen allow your skin to fill in scars and stretch marks, stretch wrinkles, and even out skin tones where discoloration is occurring. Good news for us!

This is where Western research in anti-aging is really starting to make headway. It’s been discovered that when any part of your body is injured, the brain recognizes trauma and goes into a “survival mode”.

Considering collagen is able to repair the body of crude, torn cuts, breaks, and other tissue injuries, it’s easy to understand that by creating simple micro-puncture wounds — wounds that close up within an hour or two of the treatment — the body increases its healing rate not only dramatically, but efficiently.

On a piece of paper, ow much easier would it be to fix something small like a puncture versus something large like a tear?

Much easier! Just add a tiny bit of tape on the puncture and you probably won’t notice it.

A tear across the paper, on the other hand, will be very noticeable because it requires a huge amount of tape. Not only that, but the tear can still be seen through the tape. The paper will probably be uneven as well.

Using that same principle, think about scars. More specifically, think about times when you’ve been poked by something small and sharp — like a needle or thorn. You likely bled. It hurt.

But look at that part of your body right now. Do you see a scar? Chances are you don’t. Why? It’s because it was a much smaller, more manageable injury that your body could easily heal.

Welcome to the modern Fountain of Youth — Derma Rolling!

UNFOLDING AGING SKIN: WHY YOUR SKIN MAY LOOK OLDER THAN YOUR FRIENDS

Did You Know? If our bodies didn’t produce collagen then our bodies would literally fall apart.

Collagen makes up 75 percent of the human body and is constantly regenerating

Derma Rolling Works Due To Collagen’s Natural Reaction To Micro-Trauma

Through derma rolling, it’s been discovered that such therapeutic trauma can be controlled used to simulate natural trauma. The body doesn’t know the difference. An injury is an injury.

Going along the lines of the example in the previous section, now imagine hundreds and thousands of micro-wounds created by the derma roller that are nothing more than punctures. Likely, those wounds are smaller than those of a thorn. But the effect is similar. In fact, because there are thousands of micro wounds over a single area, your body goes into even more of that “survival mode” to rush collagen to the area.

What’s more, the smaller the injury, it’s theorized that the more your skin can focus on an area, the more it can focus on doing the job well. Because of this, there is an apparent higher concentration of collagen and elastin it will produce.

The more it produces, the more dramatic the results towards youth. And the result? Newer, suppler skin is regenerated, and scarred tissue begins to fill in.

Because it’s so efficient at repairing minimal damage, people comment that they look younger and more vibrant than before. This term is referred to as ‘reverse aging’.

Derma Rolling Works

What You Can Expect Results, Pain, and Common Skin Reactions

Despite the seemingly invasive nature of needles, micro-needling is actually quite safe and very constructive. The tiny puncture wounds in the skin close up within hours of the procedure. We’re excited for you to find out how well it works for you.

Watch For Results

It’s exciting when you discover that this actually works. The first thing you’ll likely notice is that your skin initially feels tight after the the procedure. Throughout the month, that may wear off, but there’s a lot of work happening in your skin at the collagen level.

While this may vary, you’ll notice the following sequence of results:Skin feels slightly tighter > Skin begins to soften > Small portions of skin regrowth in scar tissue > Skin gets a bit thicker and more smooth

The above sequence will continue until max results are seen and felt. After which maintenance may be necessary to keep skin looking well.

Everyone has different skin, so some will see results slower or even quicker than others.

Keep a Photo Journal

Before and after pictures don’t lie. Be sure to take a photo before you use your derma roller. (You could even copy those above) Maybe after each month you can add a new photo and check your results against the previous one.

This is the best way to check your progress. Plus, it’s fun to show it to friends and family. You’ll love it!

“This Hurts! I Hate Needles.”

Two things to keep in mind: 1) these are needles, and 2) we have customers who say it’s very painful. If you can’t deal with needles then derma rolling isn’t for you. But you will be missing out.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Of those customers who complain of pain, many of them would be the first to admit that it seems to be working for them. If you are prone to be sensitive to pain, then we recommend you use a numbing cream before derma rolling.

Before doing the procedure, apply numbing cream over the area you wish to treat. Any numbing cream will do, but if you’re not sure which to use, then choose one with lidocaine as its active ingredient. Depending on the numbing cream you’re using, you may need to leave it on for 40-60 minutes before it takes effect. Afterwards, wash it thoroughly.

You may be wondering, how painful is it? What side-effects are there? And most importantly, how can I treat and avoid them?

Pinkish or Red Skin

Your skin does become quite sensitive after the treatment has finished. You will immediately notice redness spreading evenly across the treated areas of your skin. Nothing to worry about. That actually means that you did a great job rolling.

You will feel and look as if you had a sunburn.  Remember that the reaction is quite common and is safe.  The layers beneath the skin have simply been spurred to action.

Acne-Like Bumps

Believe it or not, this may be proof that the derma roller is working. Much like the redness, this may be a common reaction.

However, caution should be taken at this sign as it may be a few things that you could have avoided. Here are a few reasons:

• It may be because your hands and/or the area you treated was not completely clean before, during, or after the derma rolling session.

• Also, it may be due to you prematurely applying makeup and even sunscreen right after.

• It may also be impurities deep beneath your skin being forced out of the skin by your body’s defense system.

Rash

This has only rarely happened with a few of our customers. Upon further investigation it was diagnosed as an allergic reaction either to the creams applied or to other elemental factors.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT: RESULTS, PAIN, AND COMMON SKIN REACTIONS

The skin is more exposed after going through a derma rolling session, after all.

Just be cautious about what ingredients you are using in creams and serums and you’ll be fine.

If a serious reaction occurs then seek medical attention immediately.

Bleeding

Small drops of blood may appear during your session. This is expected and isn’t something to worry about. Simply prepare and use a clean cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol and gently dab at those bleeding areas.

If light streams of bleeding occur then put pressure on the wound with a clean towel. Elevate the area as much as is permitted. If bleeding continues, then go to an emergency room near you.

Disclaimer: While to our knowledge, we have never had such a thing happen with any of our customers; it is, however, the responsibility of the person using any of our derma roller products to do so with the utmost care. Puruskin is not responsible for the misuse of any of our products. As a reminder, if you have blood-clotting problems then you should consult your

physician or dermatologist before using your derma roller.

Scratches

This is covered more below, but sometimes people report having scratches across their skin. This may be due to one of three things:

1) the roller head has a needle that is bent or out of place

2) you are using too much pressure so that it’s not gliding but dragging

3) you are not lifting the derma roller to change rolling directions

Be sure to follow the below instructions on using a derma roller effectively, and you’ll be fine.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT: RESULTS, PAIN, AND COMMON SKIN REACTIONS

Read Before Using Derma Roller A few things to consider and prepare for

Unfortunately, the device that has the potential to give youthful beauty may also cause us harm — if it isn’t used and cleaned properly.

Because the derma roller creates small wounds on the skin, it makes it opens it up to harmful free radicals. Those same micro punctures that stimulate our skin to produce collagen can also act as gateways for bacteria and other pathogens that could ultimately harm us.

First, it’s important to answer some questions about which roller to use, how to switch roller head attachments, among other things.

But don’t worry, by following these next steps you’re on track to protecting your skin while also working toward the best results.

Inspect Needles Before Using

This is a step many may forget. While the derma roller is being stored, you don’t know

if anyone’s been handling it or if it got banged up at some point. Regardless of what causes it, if a needle gets bent or pushed out of alignment, then it will scratch

and tear at your skin. Not puncture as it’s meant to.Always check needles BEFORE each session to make sure they are intact and ready for use.

READ BEFORE USING ROLLER

Always check the needles before every use. If you drop the derma roller, it’s likely that the needles will be bent. Inspect carefully. Only use your derma roller AFTER you have confirmed that the needles are intact and ready to safely use during the treatment session.

What Roller Size ShoulD I Use?

The only thing that may change is what size of derma roller head you use.

NOTE: 0.5 mm is not included with all of our kits, but it may be purchased separately.

Switching Roller Head Attachments

If you’ve purchased one of our Total Body Kits, then you may switch out roller heads to tackle different parts of your body in one derma rolling session.

It’s easy to do, but be careful to not get pricked by the needles on your fingers. Follow the next steps to safely and easily secure and remove roller heads.

To Secure Roller Head:1. Make sure plastic cover is safely

covering the roller head’s needles.2. Firmly grip the empty derma roller

handle in one hand (‘handle hand’)3. With your other hand (‘roller hand’), use

your forefinger and thumb to grip the roller head, pinching the case’s pins into each other. This will keep the roller head firmly inside the case so you can safely push the roller into the handle.

4. While gripping the handle, push down on the release button with your handle hand’s thumb or index finger

5. While pushing release button, continue to pinch roller head by its case and fit into handle entry port. Firmly push, jiggling if necessary.

6. Test if roller head is secure

Having Trouble? If you continue to have problems with either removing or securing the derma roller heads, please contact us via [email protected].

Using Your Derma Roller FOllow These Steps To Get the Best Results

Step 1: Clean Roller Heads

The easiest way to prevent germs from causing you harm is by thoroughly washing your derma roller heads before and after you use it.

Before using the derma roller:

1. Wash with warm, running water for a few seconds

2. Disinfect with rubbing alcohol (70% Ethyl or isopropyl is best — hydrogen peroxide is a good alternative)You can purchase this at a local pharmacy, or at amazon.com.

3. Submerge roller head and allow to sit for at least 10 minutes. Using included plastic casing, stand case upright (as illustrated) and fill with alcohol solution until needles are completely submerged

WARNING: It’s a popular method to use a spray bottle — filled with alcohol — to cleanse a derma roller. This is NOT an approved method to disinfect a derma roller. Please do not put yourself at risk.

Setting Down Your Roller

While using the roller, you might need to put it down for a minute or two. Make sure you put it on its back, or on its side, so that the needles don’t touch the surface.

Also, ensure that you place it on top of a clean surface, preferably on top of a clean paper towel.

Step 2: Wash Face, Body, AND/or Area You Mean To Treat

Using a quality soap, facial wash, body wash, etc. thoroughly wash the area(s) of your body that you wish to treat. Many of our customers find that it’s easier to first take a shower, clean their entire body, and then roll after they’re dry.

Click here to see some facial washes that we feel are great for derma rolling.

Step 3: Roll Derma Roller Across Skin Now to actually use your derma roller. The needles will do most of the work. All you have to do is roll it over the problem spots. And follow a few basic tips.

1. Stretch your skin taut with one hand and use the derma roller with the other. (see illustration)

2. Roll the derma roller 4 to 5 times back and forth over the area you wish to treat.

3. Roll in the following directions for best results (4 to 5 rolls in each direction): vertically, horizontally, then both diagonal directions. Think, tic-tac-toe.

4. Briefly lift the roller off the skin before rolling in a different direction (no matter how slight the change). Ignoring to do so will result in the needles catching, scratching, or tearing at your skin.

5. Use enough pressure to penetrate the top layer of skin. But be careful not to use too much. Pay close attention. You’ll know your using enough when you hear light popping noises as each needle punctures your skin.

Only Touch With Clean Hands

For about two hours after your session, avoid touching your skin at all costs. If you must touch your skin, only do so with clean hands. Touching your now exposed skin with dirty hands is a sure way to irritate your skin and get a rash, infection (acne-looking bumps).

Step 4: Use a Quality SkinCare Serum, Lotion, Or Oil To complete the treatment, apply a quality skincare serum, cream, lotion, or mask. When the derma roller passes over your skin, thousands of micro wounds act as channels through the outermost dermal layer of skin.

What this means for you is that your skin is ready to absorb 80 percent more vitamins, minerals, and helpful oils. The outcome is that your body has received far more benefits of the skincare products than it could have done on its own. Hence, this will help magnify your results.

In most cases, you’ll use the serum, cream, lotion, or other product immediately following the derma rolling session. But it’s important to note when you shouldn’t apply it immediately.

Below you’ll find a list of skin conditions that you may be looking to target, great products to help supercharge your results, and when to apply each.

USING YOUR DERMA ROLLER: READ AND FOLLOW THESE STEPS FOR BEST RESULTS

Step 5: Clean and Wash Up

Leave your skin alone for about two hours before washing it with cold water. Make sure you use a gentle facial and/or body wash. Do NOT use any harsh soap when washing the treated area for the next 2-3 days.

To clean the derma roller, repeat “Step 2: Wash Face, Body, AND/or Area You Mean To Treat”. Be sure to rinse your derma roller and plastic casings with hot water before soaking in alcohol as instructed in Step 2.

At this point, you may notice that the treated areas are slightly red or pinkish. This is a normal reaction done by the skin. It just means that your skin is starting to produce that collagen we’ve talked about earlier.

To ease the redness, you may use soothing cream over the treated areas for the next few days whenever the redness flares up. This should also help with the healing process. Here’s that product.

Step 6: IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO After — Others To Avoid

Keep Your Skin Hydrated — An important part in the aftermath of micro-needling is keeping your skin from drying

out.  Locking in moisture will restore balance and give maximum results during the healing phase.  We recommend using a quality moisturizer (Argan Oil or Hyaluronic Acid should be sufficient).

Also, but sure to drink plenty of water and other healthy beverages.

Use Sunblock To Protect From UV Rays — Many harmful free radicals come directly from the sun, so if you must go out after derma rolling, stay away from direct exposure to the sun for at least a few days.

If you must go out, then be sure to use a quality UVA/UVB suncreen (at least 30SPF — higher SPF is better).

Minimize Makeup Use — While you don't want to wear makeup immediately following the procedure, you may apply it the very next day.  Just be sure to stay away from cosmetic products that contain alpha hydroxyl acids.  Retinol products should only be used the day after a derma rolling session, NOT immediately after.

Applying such products too soon after the treatment may irritate the skin further.

Only Touch With Clean Hands — For about two hours after your session, avoid touching your skin at all costs. If you must touch your skin, only do so with clean hands. Touching your now exposed skin with dirty hands is a sure way to irritate your skin and get a rash, infection (acne-looking bumps).

Using the Derma Roller On Odd Areas

Often we get emails from customers who wonder how to use the derma roller on places that they consider odd. This includes the neck, legs, inner thighs, hips, wrists, knees and so forth.

Actually, there’s nothing odd about them at all. The process for using the derma roller on your face versus one of those areas is really no different. Simply follow the above instructions when using the derma roller and follow the size recommendations that we’ve illustrated above..

One important thing no matter where you roll, remember to stretch the skin area with your free hand while the other is busy rolling.

For Hairloss Does it work? Yes, definitely. We have yet to find a better resource out there than a case study that was done on 100 men in two groups:

Group 1 applied 1 milliliter of 5% Minoxidil to their scalp twice a day; Group 2 also applied 1 milliliter of 5% Minoxidil to their scalp twice daily, and used a derma roller on their scalp once per week.

(IMPORTANT: They were instructed to apply Minoxidil one day after using derma roller)

After 12 weeks, Group 2 (those using derma rollers) boasted results five times more effective than the group who didn’t use them.

The size used in the case study was 1.5 mm.

Here’s a link to a great video to show you how to properly do use a derma roller for thinning hair. (That is, until we produce our own video)

USING YOUR DERMA ROLLER: READ AND FOLLOW THESE STEPS FOR BEST RESULTS

When To Use And How Often The Key To Successful Derma Rolling Is Patience

Easily, this is one of the biggest questions we get from our customers. Many have the understanding that the more often the better.

However, the opposite is true. Of the majority of our customers who have reached out and said that they weren’t seeing good results, this was the first thing we asked them. 90 percent of the time the were using the derma roller once per day or even twice daily.

That is FAR too often. Not only will this likely cause further scarring on your skin, but you likely WON’T get positive results.

How Often For Best Results?

On average, your skin will take about 3 to 4 weeks to repair and rebuild. If one were to use a derma roller before the skin was healed, then it would interrupt the process and few results, if any would show.

Simply put, your skin needs enough time to allow collagen to fill in the

As we’ve mentioned earlier, the higher the gauge on your rollers, the longer you may

need to wait between treatment sessions. You can safely use the following roller sizes within their corresponding time frames:0.5mm roller once every 2 to 3 weeks. 1 mm roller once every 3 to 4 weeks. 1.5mm roller, once every 4 to 5 weeks.

Again, make sure that you give your skin time to recover between sessions.

It’s important to note that the time frames are only meant to be a guide. We recognize that some our customers are able to heal more quickly than others.

Some of our customers have seen success using the derma roller once every other week, or even once per week.

Again, only use when your skin feels healed and ready.
