Solar Returns

Solar Return charts are calculated for the exact moment when the Sun returns to i ts natal posi t ion (wi thin 2 days of one's bir thday). These charts can be read much l ike natal charts, except that i t must be kept in mind that they are in ef fect only for the course of a year (approximately f rom bir thday to bir thday).

A Solar Return chart can be read in as much detai l as desired. Some key points to consider are as fol lows:

1. The Ascendant of the Solar Return chart wi l l color the indiv idual 's approach to his or her environment for the year. For example, i f Ar ies is on the Ascendant in the Solar Return chart , the indiv idual may approach the year wi th increased energy and enterpr ise, and perhaps with some impat ience. The ruler of the Ascending sign, and i ts posi t ion by sign, house, and aspect, wi l l hold more informat ion as to the indiv idual 's general temperament and focus.

2. Note which planets and points in the natal chart , i f any, are ef fect ively brought to an angle of the Solar Return chart . Let 's say, for example, that the Solar Return Ascendant is 22 degrees Virgo, and the natal posi t ion of Venus is 24 degrees Virgo. The natal Venus is therefore conjunct the Solar Return Ascendant, and one can presume that the condi t ion and issues surrounding the indiv idual 's natal Venus wi l l be highl ighted (ef fect ively coming to the fore) in the Solar Return year. This considerat ion shows us what natal condi t ions, or inherent personal i ty issues, are highl ighted in the year of the Solar Return. I f , for example, you have a natal Sun square Mars, and the sun is on the Solar Return Ascendant, perhaps with Mars on the Midheaven as wel l , we can safely presume that the Sun-Mars struggle or chal lenge wi l l be especial ly highl ighted in both a personal (Ascendant) and publ ic (Midheaven) manner.

3. Simi lar ly, note which Solar Return planets are on or aspect ing Solar Return angles. These are t ransi ts that are emphasized in the year of the Solar Return.

4. What is the condi t ion of the Sun? Where is i t located by house? (We know the sign, of course, because i t wi l l be at the exact natal posi t ion). This can show an area of focus for the upcoming year. What k ind of aspects does i t make?

5. Where is the Moon? The posi t ion of the Moon by house and sign wi l l show where your heart is, so to speak. I f , for example, the Solar Return Moon is in Libra in the 5th house, you wi l l l ikely to be emot ional ly t ied up in, and concentrated on, love and relat ionship. A strong need for personal sel f -expression wi l l be character ist ic of the year, and emot ional ups and downs are l ikely to occur in th is area of l i fe, s imply because this is where your heart is—this is the area of l i fe that you have the biggest emot ional investment in—and you may not be completely rat ional and " in control" in th is area. More than simple f luctuat ions wi l l be in store in th is area of l i fe i f , for example, the Moon is also forming a square to Pluto in the Solar Return chart . Profound changes are l ikely to occur here. Thus, factor ing in the Moon's aspects wi l l help ref ine the reading.

6. Note that a Solar Return chart can be read much l ike a natal chart , wi th the idea that i t is t ransient rather than permanent. I f you are interested in looking at a speci f ic area, such as f inances, you can study the Return's second house, eighth house, and the condi t ion of Venus. For example, i f Solar Return Venus is opposi te Solar Return Neptune, especial ly i f Venus also rules the second house in the Solar Return, you might presume that ei ther th is coming year there is less emphasis on mater ia l ism, or that your income might be f luctuat ing and somewhat unstable.

7. A considerat ion that I have found to be part icular ly s igni f icant is cr i t ical degrees. The most s igni f icant cr i t ical degrees in Solar Return interpretat ion are 29 degrees and 0 degrees of any sign. When found in the SR chart , there can be signi f icant events surrounding the energy of the planet/point i tsel f , and/or the house i t ru les in the chart . I do look at the classic cr i t ical degrees as wel l , but as a secondary considerat ion. 8. Combining Transi ts and Progressions in Predict ive Astrology

In predict ive work, we look for more than one act ivat ion in order to see a predict ive theme in the nat ive's l i fe. One factor alone, such as progressed Venus square natal Mercury, is general ly not enough to predict a s igni f icant event occurr ing in the nat ive's l i fe. We look for conf i rmat ion elsewhere.

An i l luminat ing technique involves creat ing a t r i -wheel wi th the natal chart in the center, secondary progressions in the second wheel, and transi ts in the outer ( th i rd) wheel . This way we can easi ly see transi ts to both the natal chart and the progressed chart , progressed planets in relat ionship to the natal chart , and progressed planets in relat ion to other progressed planets. This wi l l help us to see the big picture, in terms of general themes. I f we study transi ts to the natal chart a lone, we wi l l

f ind that s igni f icant events are not always conf i rmed. I f we add transi ts to progressed planets and points to our study, we open up much more detai l . Studying progressed planets and points and their relat ionship to the natal chart (and to each other) , our study becomes even more f ine-tuned. 5. Another area of focus this year can be found by determining which natal house is ef fect ively brought to the Ascendant. For example, i f the Solar Return Ascendant is 14 degrees Cancer, and this degree is found in the natal f i f th house, the natal f i f th house is ef fect ively "brought" to the Ascendant, and wi l l be another area of focus. 6. Where is the Moon? The posi t ion of the Moon by house and sign wi l l show where your heart is, so to speak. I f , for example, the Solar Return Moon is in Libra in the 5th house, you wi l l l ikely to be emot ional ly t ied up in, and concentrated on, love and relat ionship. 8. Get an overal l feel for the Solar Return chart by examining hemispheric emphasis, whether or not i t is scattered, and which houses (angular, succedent, and cadent) are emphasized. Also, note the qual i t ies of the dominant s igns of the year (cardinal , f ixed, or mutable).

9. You know the upcoming year wi l l be a "big" one ( in a t ransi t ional sense) when the Solar Return Sun forms a hard angle wi th the Solar Return Moon. This is also t rue when the Sun is conjunct a Solar Return angle.

Example #1:Let 's look at an example. The fol lowing is the natal chart of Ann: The Solar Return chart for the year we are studying is presented below, along with Ann's natal chart in the outer wheel so that we can easi ly see which natal p lanets conjunct the Solar Return angles. Immediately, I honed in on a few standout features involv ing the angles:1. Solar Return Jupi ter is conjunct the Ascendant (r is ing) in the Solar Return chart , and i t opposes a conjunct ion of Mars and Neptune on the Descendant. Mercury squares this opposi t ion, forming a T-square. Al l p lanets involved are in the foreground (angular) , in prominent posi t ions in the Return chart .

2. The natal Moon conjuncts the Solar Return Midheaven.

3. Solar Return Mercury is conjunct the natal Midheaven.

We also note that there is a conjunct ion of the Moon and Pluto in the Return chart , and that i t t r ines SR Jupi ter, and sext i les SR Mars and Pluto.

Many di f ferent issues came to the fore in the year in quest ion. Most notably, her good fr iend with whom she maintained a f r iendship wi th for a few years, commit ted suic ide and a murder on the same day. This, of course, came as a complete shock, and the violent act rocked Ann's world. She had no clue that th is man who seemed to be qui te " together" could have commit ted such acts.

Ann, of course, struggled with th is t ragedy for some t ime af ter i t happened. She struggled with gui l t (d id she ignore signs he may have been displaying?), loss (of a f r iendship), shock, and anger.

I f we had looked at the Solar Return chart before the events happened, we would not have been able to predict what actual ly happened. However, we may have easi ly seen that Ann would confront some powerful emot ional issues, perhaps in a publ ic manner (natal Moon conjunct the SR Midheaven), and that she would struggle wi th i l lusion/gui l t /anger/excess wi th regards to her personal relat ionships (Mars conjunct Neptune at the Descendant) . Mercury rules her natal 11th house of f r iendships, and i t a lso rules her Solar Return 11th house. Mercury (both natal and Solar Return) is found in the 10th house conjunct her natal Midheaven, ef fect ively br inging 11th house issues into the fore in a publ ic manner.

The SR Moon conjunct ion to Pluto suggests an emot ional cr is is of sorts. James A. Eshelman, in his book Interpret ing Solar Returns, descr ibes this aspect as "Sharp, intensive al terat ions in l i fe s i tuat ions; dramat ic t ransformat ions. . .Exper iences el ic i t a profound, c l imact ic emot ional response (cr is is, shock). . .Encounter ing the unl ikely, improbable, unbel ievable." (1)

Of course, we cannot expect something as dramat ic as what happened in Ann's l i fe to occur as a resul t of the indiv idual factors found in the Solar Return chart and noted here. For example, Neptune conjunct the Descendant in a Solar Return chart , taken alone, can very certainly represent the encounter ing of dis i l lusionments in c lose relat ionships. I t can also suggest a year in which the nat ive looks for new meanings in relat ionships, for example.

I t is interest ing to f ind Jupi ter prominent in Solar Returns and transi ts when, for example, a person has had an accident, or goes through something l ike Ann did. At f i rst , i t seems counter- intui t ive because we consider Jupi ter the planet of luck. Indeed, i t does have a protect ive inf luence. Perhaps prominent Jupi ter suggests a level of protect ion in the sense that the person survived the incident or cr is is. Another way of looking at i t is that Jupi ter is the planet of expansion and excess. Ef fect ively, i t does represent some level of drama. Involved with Neptune and Mars, and we can easi ly see that i t expanded or emphasized the Mars/Neptune issues of dis i l lusionment. When in di f f icul t aspect especial ly, Jupi ter can suggest over-conf idence and recklessness or misjudgment as a resul t .

More Considerat ions/ Interpretat ion TechniquesIf you study Solar Returns and f ind them as intr iguing as I do, you wi l l l ikely want to f ine-tune your analyses. On the f i rst page of th is Solar Return feature, I l is ted some of what I feel are the key considerat ions for interpret ing Solar Return charts. In addi t ion to these considerat ions, there are many di f ferent factors to consider that wi l l help you with " f ine-tuning".

Consider the aspects that SR planets are making. Let 's say SR Venus is conjunct the SR Ascendant. One might jump to the conclusion that the nat ive may f ind romance, or that i t wi l l be an especial ly social or romant ic, in the year ahead. I f SR Saturn is squar ing that Venus, and Saturn is, for example, on the IC, th is may in fact be a reclusive year—one in which the nat ive's lack of social l i fe or romant ic l i fe may be an issue or a preoccupat ion.

I f ind the Vertex and the Nodes of the Moon prominent when important contacts are made. I have frequent ly seen, for example, SR Venus in t ight conjunct ion to SR Node in the Solar Return chart before meet ing a "s igni f icant other" , as wel l as SR Venus t ight ly square the Nodal axis, and SR Vertex t ight ly conjunct the natal Vertex.

I f you want to look more closely at a part icular area of l i fe, such as f inances, study the Solar Return 2nd house. Look at the rul ing planet of the sign on the second house and where i t is posi ted, as wel l as the aspects i t makes. I f heal th and habi ts are areas of concern, study the sixth house in a s imi lar manner, and so forth.

Finding the natal ascendant s ign on the Solar Return ascendant is s igni f icant. That year may be one in which we f ind ourselves rely ing on ourselves, focusing on our needs, and expressing ourselves as indiv iduals. When the reverse is t rue, that is, when the natal descendant s ign is on the Solar Return ascendant, we might feel we are dependent on others dur ing that per iod.

Qual i t ies of the Houses and Signs:

When many planets (approximately 5 or more) are found in angular posi t ions, and to some extent when there are an unusual number of planets in cardinal s igns, the year can be a very busy one—perhaps too busy to the point that the nat ive feels there just isn' t enough t ime to plan ahead or th ink things through. Poor decis ion-making may be a consequence.

A preponderance of planets and angles in mutable s igns and/or planets in cadent houses suggests a per iod of t ime when the nat ive needs to adapt to many l i t t le and frequent changes. The changes may not be qui te as dramat ic as the ones associated with cardinal /angular Solar Returns, but they can take their to l l i f the nat ive is, for example, a largely f ixed personal i ty. The nat ive may be in a preparat ion phase. This is general ly a good year for tending to detai ls. Instead of being react ive, which is more l ikely when there is a preponderance of cardinal /angular planets, the nat ive is proact ive. The down side of th is condi t ion is a feel ing that one is busy but not knowing where things are heading.

A preponderance of planets in f ixed signs and/or succedent houses can be indicat ive of a year when things don' t change very much, and/or when the nat ive is in a bui ld ing phase. I t may be a part icular ly stable year. Impulsiveness is far less l ikely wi th th is condi t ion than i f there is a preponderance of cardinal /angular planets in the Solar Return.

Of course, consider ing the overal l feel of the SR chart in th is way is best when you compare i t wi th the natal chart . A Solar Return chart that is predominant ly cardinal and angular is l ikely to be more dramat ic for a f ixed personal i ty than i t would be for a cardinal /angular personal i ty, who would feel qui te comfortable wi th the energy of the year.

With a strong emphasis on angular houses (houses 1, 4, 7, and 10), the year can be a t ime of new beginnings, much act ion, and a lot of at tent ion. The f i rst 4 months of the year ahead may be most act ive.

With a strong emphasis on succedent houses (houses 2, 5, 8, and 11), th is is a year of developing, bui ld ing, and overal l stabi l i ty. Some resistance to change is l ikely, and inert ia may dominate. Months 5 to 8 ( that is, f ive to eight months af ter your bir thday) may be most act ive.

With a strong emphasis on cadent houses (houses 3, 6, 9, and 12), there is a tendency to scatter energies, feel somewhat rest less yet di rect ionless, and i t could be a year of some obscur i ty. Months 9 to 12 ( that is, the last 4 months of the year) may be most act ive.

Cardinal s igns general ly indicate new ini t iat ives, physical act iv i ty, and some impulsiveness.

Fixed signs can indicate some cl inging to th ings the way they are, and some inert ia.

Mutable s igns predominat ing suggests some sociabi l i ty, indecis iveness, procrast inat ion, and scatter ing of energies.

Hemisphere Emphasis:

I f the east s ide of the chart is strong, the indiv idual feels in control of h is or her dest iny, makes decis ions, and may feel empowered. I f the west s ide of the chart is strong, the indiv idual may feel he or she doesn' t have (or doesn' t exercise) his or her f ree wi l l .

I f most planets are above the hor izon (wi th the possible except ion of a heavy emphasis on the twel f th house), there is a focus on external events, publ ic l i fe, and social and business concerns.

I f below the hor izon, th is can be a more introspect ive and subject ive year. A Note on Forecast ing and Worry

There may also be a tendency to worry about "heavy" planets in a prominent posi t ion in a Solar Return chart cast for the future. When I was a young(er!) adul t , I remember taking a look at my Solar Return chart for the upcoming year, and worrying about SR Pluto conjunct the Midheaven, t ight ly squar ing SR Moon in the 7th house. In that same SR chart , Sun, Venus, and Mars were al l in the 8th house. The chart looked ominous to me! What happened that year was certainly l i fe-changing, as the direct ion of my career changed, I moved, and I met a man who I later marr ied, but none of these things, at the t ime, were things I considered negat ive. In hindsight, I look back to that t ime and think perhaps I was a l i t t le hasty wi th my decis ion-making, but none of the events of that year warranted the kind of worry I put mysel f through.

Whenever we use astrological forecast ing methods, i t is always important to remember that we should real ly be doing these analyses in order to better prepare ourselves. We should t ry to avoid gett ing ourselves into a t izzy over th ings that "might be". Always keep in mind the idea that we have free wi l l and we have choices. I t 's perhaps easier said than done, but looking into the past and applying " forecast ing" techniques on the years behind us can certainly help al leviate some of the worry. I f we see that we survived a year wi th an ominous- looking Solar Return chart , i t is easier to relax about the upcoming ones.

Solar Return Ascendant Signs The Solar Return Ascendant s ign shows your overal l temperament, at t i tude, and approach to l i fe in the year ahead.

In Ar ies, you may take in i t iat ive in the area of l i fe where Ar ies fal ls in your natal chart . You could also be impat ient or impulsive in th is area. This is a year of opportuni t ies, in that you wi l l be more adventurous and you wi l l have the courage to make changes. You are more l ikely to at t ract new circumstances, people, and exper iences into your l i fe. Your approach to l i fe is more direct than usual , and others might complain that you are more sel f -absorbed than usual ! Decis ion-making is quick this year, and you are l ikely to be more physical ly act ive.

In Taurus, domest ic issues and f inances wi l l be on your mind. This is a year of overal l stabi l i ty. Your approach to l i fe is markedly conservat ive and pract ical . You are resistant to making big changes, and you are skept ical of new ini t iat ives. You are general ly content to leave things as they are, and you are not incl ined to seek out brand new exper iences (or people!) . Inert ia and resistance to making changes may character ize the per iod. You have the power to at t ract th is year, especial ly through pat ience. You may also feel the need to have more beauty in your l i fe, v ia your surroundings and perhaps with regards to a desire to improve your appearance.

In Gemini , you are outgoing, sociable, and very cur ious. Your at tent ion span may be short , however, and you might have your f inger in too many pies. Your interests are vast , and i t can be hard f in ishing projects you complete before your at tent ion moves elsewhere! You open yoursel f up to many possibi l i t ies, and perhaps too many. You may f ind i t hard to keep commitments.

In Cancer, you wear your emot ions on your s leeve this year. More sensi t ive than usual , you have your eye on secur i ty. Your at tent ion turns to your home front, your fami ly, and domest ic issues. You may be more introspect ive than usual . Oversensi t iv i ty and defensiveness may be a problem. Secur i ty is a dr iv ing force this year. As Cancer 's ruler, the Moon holds important c lues as to what area of l i fe in which you may encounter instabi l i ty and change, and why you feel protect ive of your sense of secur i ty as a resul t .

In Leo, your urge to create is strong. There may be more involvement wi th chi ldren or especial ly romant ic incl inat ions. Your physical appearance and your manner become very important, especial ly s ince Leo is on the f i rst house and i t ru les the "star" of the Solar Return chart-- the Sun. You may be more dramat ic and expressive this year, or th is could point to a focus on chi ldren, hobbies, or other Leo-ruled areas of l i fe, depending on your personal incl inat ions as wel l as your l i fe c i rcumstances. had Leo r is ing in my Solar Return charts in the years I had two of my chi ldren (both born wi th Leo Ascendants), for example. Be sure to look to the house posi t ion of the Sun for areas of l i fe where you have a strong opportuni ty to express yoursel f and your creat iv i ty.

In Virgo, focus is on your work, your habi ts, your heal th, and your rout ines. I t may be a rather unspectacular year--a year when you may be caught up in making adjustments to your l i fe and/or worrying about problems. I t can be a rather mundane year (unless your Sun or Ascendant is Virgo natal ly) , but one that is qui te busy. You may feel l ike you are doing a lot of prepar ing but don' t exact ly know what i t is you are prepar ing for.
