Subject: Camel - Paradise Wildlife Park

Hi

I hope you are well.

Unfortunately, overnight we lost one of our camels, Kara.

We have had the vet in this morning who has taken samples for a post mortem.

At this stage, they think it could be Avian TB – I would like to stress that they only think and they do not know for

certain yet.

We do not know the strain but tests have been sent to IZVG Pathology.

She had been ill for approx. 4 weeks and they were treating her for severe constipation.

On-site, we have put in foot dips and keeping to a strict health and hygiene protocol.

We have spoken to Holts who have confirmed with DEFRA and they have confirmed that they are able to collect her

this afternoon and she will be incinerated.

Unfortunately, our ZIMS is not working at the moment so we just have the basic information for her.

DOB 02/05

Arrived PWP 18/1/06 from Blair Drummond Safari Park

We will forward over her specimen report once ZIMS is back up and running.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to come back to me.

With Kind Regards

Hi Thank you for letting me know; I’m sorry for your loss. Could I just clarify, what is meant by a stick health and hygiene protocol? And were there any particular symptoms or signs that lead your vet to believe it was Avian TB? As Avian TB is transmissible to humans, have any of your staff who have been working with Kara shown any signs of infection? When do you hope to get the results back from IZVG Pathology? Thanks

Hi

Thank you for your email.

Kara was unwell for about 4 weeks, she gradually went down hill. The vets thought it was a blockage & constipation

but after a PM this morning our local vet feels it could be Avian TB but not sure of strain or if it definitely is but

we are dealing with this as if it is, just in case. They cannot treat for Avian TB & it's like a wasting disease. I've sent

the samples by next day delivery and at IZVG Pathology is ready to start test tomorrow. Hopefully we will have

results within 24 hours. We do not have any animals or the team showing any signs of bad health but we have

sterilised the area. Foot dips were & are in place, gloves worn around the camels etc. head of paddocks has

very high hygiene & cleaning standards but we have informed all section to make sure of no cross contamination,

checking all cleaning & washing hands etc is high priority. Holts have collected her as category 1 & we will have the

paperwork for this.

I'm on my way into London at the moment but can speak over the phone now or in the morning.

Take care

Brief clinical summary:

Possible TB. Animal not eating, thin.

Histology Report

Description: Lung (2 sections): Both sections have centrally necrotic peripherally encapsulated focal abscess lesions.

Lesion centres contain necrotic cytoclastic neutrophilic inflammatory debris, surrounded by a narrow rim

of viable neutrophils and macrophages, blending with a fibrous capsule and intermingled

lymphoplasmacytic cells, delineating lesions from the surrounding lung parenchyma. Lesions are situated

predominantly beneath the pleural surfaces, and the latter are thickened, fibrotic, with surface deposits of

organising fibrin intermingled with macrophages and a few neutrophils. Perivascular lymphocytic and

neutrophilic infiltrates are present in the thickened fibrous pleura, and there is pneumocyte hyperplasia of

the outermost alveoli along the pleural margin.

Ziehl-Neelsen stain for acid-fast organisms is negative. Occasional Gram-negative rods are present

within peripheral necrotic debris with Gram stain. Occasional Gram-negative rods are present in the

pleural fibrin deposits.

Diagnoses: 1. Multifocal chronic-active fibrinosuppurative pleuropneumonia, with occasional intralesional Gram-

negative rod-shaped bacteria, lung.

Comments: Lesions are encapsulated abscesses filled with degenerating neutrophils, and there are ongoing pleural

fibrin deposits above a layer of pleural fibrosis and more chronic lymphocytic inflammation. Ziehl-

Neelsen stains for acid-fast organisms are negative, and the lesions are not typical granulomas,

suggesting that mycobacteriosis can be excluded. Small numbers of Gram-negative rod-shaped

organisms are present within liquefactive debris in the abscess centres, and occasionally within the fibrin

on the pleural surfaces. These may be significant - a range of Gram-negative bacteria have been

associated with pneumonia and pleuropneumonia lesions in camels, and pleuritis and chronic lung

abscesses are commonly reported findings in camels at abattoir slaughter.

Large intralesional colonies of coccobacilli suggestive of Yersinia are not seen.

Results of bacterial cultures are awaited, and will be reported later.

Subject: Paradise Park Poor Animal Conditions

Dear Yesterday I accompanied my son on a school trip to Pardise Park: White Stubbs Ln, Broxbourne, Hertfordshire EN10 7QA I was appalled by some of the conditions in which the animals were living. In many cases the enclosures were painfully small and inadequate attention had been spent on ensuring that the animals were occupied. For example: The reindeer enclosure was very small despite housing a significant number of animals. The enclosure itself was mainly concrete and was divided by a barrier which the animals had to wriggle around to get to the other side. They were clearly distressed, walking round and round the perimeter of the enclosures rather like 'dead men walking'. The emus were also in a tiny area. The sign on the outside of the enclosure said that emus could run up to x miles per hour, but there was no space for them to run even a few metres. The school chose to take my son and his friends to Paradise Park because they wanted to teach them about animals but I think in the end what the kids actually learned is that people don't always look after them properly. It was both a disappointing and upsetting trip as a number of other parent helpers and teachers remarked. I'd be so grateful if you would inspect the park with these points in mind. I'm sure that with the right improvements it could become the place we all hoped it would be. Yours sincerely,

Categories: DW

DEAR ,

Thank you for your email dated the 27th June regarding your observations and concerns following your recent visit to

Paradise Wildlife Park. Before I address the main points in your email, I thought I would explain a little about the inspection process for zoos. As you may be aware, the above Zoo Licensing Act requires local authorities such as East Herts Council to undertake regular inspections of zoo premises. The general inspection regime for a premises such as Paradise Wildlife Park is as follows:

• Year one – inspection by two DEFRA inspectors, the local authority inspector(s) and local authority appointed vet.

• Year two – inspection by the local authority inspector(s) and/or local authority appointed vet.

• Year three – inspection by two DEFRA inspectors, the local authority inspector(s) and local authority appointed vet.

• Year four – inspection by the local authority inspector(s) and/or local authority appointed vet.

• Year five – inspection by the local authority inspector(s) and/or local authority appointed vet.

The inspection process then repeats itself, starting at year one. During the inspections in years one and three, the inspection team will examine the premises in great detail to make sure that the zoo is complying with the legislation and guidance covering zoo premises. In the intervening years, the local authority inspectors and/or local authority appointed vet will monitor the premises and investigate/evaluate any changes which have occurred; and if needed assemble a full inspection team to undertake a full inspection. Paradise Wildlife Park was inspected at the beginning of June as part of a Year one inspection. Treatment of animals and enclosure suitability During inspections, the inspection team will look at the animal’s welfare and make sure its needs are met. They look at the enclosure size and suitability as well as the enrichment it provides to the animal. They will also look at the medical treatment it receives, both preventative and reactive. At the time of the previous full inspection in October 2011, the inspectors made the following observations on their report about Paradise Wildlife Park:

“The inspectors were very impressed by the excellent standard of enclosures, and in particular those of the cats.” “The inspection team were impressed by the naturalistic planting throughout the site, the well-designed enclosures, the good health of the animals and the enthusiasm and knowledge of all the staff they met.”

“The zoo uses environmental enrichment very effectively”

At the time of the last inspection in June 2014, the inspectors echoed similar findings, although the final report is not yet available.

Conclusion From my recent inspection and previous dealings with the business, I believe Paradise Wildlife Park meet the required standards set out in legislation and guidance. While I am sorry this may not be the answer you are after, I would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. If you would like to discuss the contents of this letter further, please feel free to contact me. Yours Sincerely
