January 2015
By the end of this session you will
be able to:
Select appropriate databases for
Competition Law,
Formulate a search for cases and journal
articles for a specific topic,
Select appropriate resources on the internet
for Competition Law.
LibrarySearch (LS): Purpose &
Coverage LibrarySearch is a discovery tool that provides
access to millions of learning resources: eBooks
Journal articles
Reviews, conference papers, newspaper articles, etc.
Library Catalogue (for discovering the location and availability of printed books, DVDs, etc.)
LibrarySearch does not give access to: Cases and legislation (use JustCite)
Articles in legal journals on Lexis and Westlaw (but it does find journals covering law in other databases)
Datasets, e.g. Company accounts, Macroeconomic data, Marketing data
LS: Access – the University Portal
Access via the Library & Computing tab See the dedicated LibrarySearch channel
Note: Access to each of the underlying databases is via the eLibrary channel
LS: Accessing full-text -
Authentication
Sometimes, especially from off-campus, you will be prompted to login to the database in which the full-text item is held
Look for an institutional (rather than individual) login button and select the University of Greenwich – OpenAthens option; you may then be prompted to login with your network username and password
LS: Authentication - Example
We’ve clicked on a link to an article in the Cambridge Journals database, but it hasn’t given us direct access; so…

Searching in Lexis:
Choose key terms
These could be a phrase such as:
“parallel behaviour”
“distribution agreements”,
“block exemption”,
“anti competitive abuse(s) Lexis always searches words as a phrase, unless you instruct
otherwise and will return results with words in that order.
Or individual words, such as “dominance”
Searching in Lexis: Using
Connectors Connectors:
AND to find both terms anywhere in the
document, e.g. Competition Law AND internal
market,
OR to find either of two terms anywhere in the
document, e.g. joint ventures OR Co-operation
agreements
Proximity connectors:
w/s to find both terms within the same sentence,
e.g. “Competition law W/S internal market”
