What a wonderful sight at school today with all of the children and staff dressed in onesies and
pyjamas—this has all been for Children in Need! There have been various activities and parties
all day and even an art auction in Nursery! Thank you for your generous contributions, we will
let you know the total raised next week.
On Monday, we held our Remembrance Assembly and we were delighted to be joined by Nick
Shepherd, our Chair of Governors. During the assembly we challenged him to a competition to
see if he had a better memory than one of our pupils. He was beaten by Alex B in Year 3, but
he took his defeat gracefully! We discussed why we remember our fallen soldiers in November
and the significance of the poppy. The children impeccably observed a two minute silence at
11.00 am which was followed by the Last Post, beautifully played by Ellie Richardson, a 4th form
pupil at St Peter’s – thank you Ellie for coming over to Clifton—the children were in awe of
your playing and well done children for your lovely behaviour.
Our Library opened for business on Monday with huge excitement! Children have the
opportunity to loan and return a book once a week. Thanks again to Mrs Hall and Mrs
Headlam-Morley for setting up this fantastic facility, I know it will be widely used.
Year 1 had an exciting afternoon on Wednesday, when they enjoyed wonderful weather for
their open top bus tour of York. Thank you Miss Beadle, Mrs Griffiths, staff and parents for
accompanying them—I am sure you had a great time!
It was lovely to welcome parents to the Forum sessions on Wednesday. It gives us an
opportunity to inform you of the work we are doing at school. Items discussed included building works, curriculum developments, car parking, dining experience and there were also
discussions in the open forum. We do find these sessions useful and any feedback of how we
can improve/encourage a larger attendance at these events will be most welcomed.
Year 2 went for a cookery session to the STO Cookery room on Wednesday. They baked
some bread buns and learned about the dynamics of yeast—memories of Home Economics
lessons came flooding back from my school days! Great fun—thank you to both Mrs Hall and
Mrs Spencer, Lipfon Tang from St Peter’s and all of the parent helpers. On the cookery front,
we have now advertised for a new Chef at Clifton, to commence in January. If you know of
anyone who may be interested, please pass on the information. Follow the link: Advert for
Chef.
Also on Wednesday, the Nursery visited the STP Art Gallery and Studio. This inspired them to
produce their paintings of Pudsey Bear. Thank you to Mr Darmody, Head of Art, for arranging
the visit.
On Thursday, 3M performed an excellent assembly all about The Titanic. The children acted
superbly, providing the audience with a glimpse at what happened on the voyage and what the
entertainment would have been like in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class. I thought the ballroom and Irish
dancing were simply fantastic! Well done to the whole cast and Miss Morgan for preparing the
children.
Whilst walking around the school today, I could hear the wonderful sounds of Christmas songs.
This is the start of such a wonderful time of year for the children in school and it is very busy.
Please keep an eye on the school calendar and diary, website and emails for up to date
information and events! Further in the newsletter, the Clifton School Friends (CSF) committee
are asking for volunteers to help on the Christmas Activity day, we always appreciate your
support.
The St Peter’s School Drama Department are performing a production of ‘Alice’.
Two of our pupils, Nell and Tess are sharing the part of young Alice in this
adaptation of the famous story. If you would like tickets please find full details
on the website, click here.
The school building looks stunning, the children and staff have put so much work into the
vibrant displays celebrating their work. Please take the opportunity to look around the school
and classrooms to admire the standard - you will not fail to be impressed. Thank you to all the
staff for creating such a wonderful learning environment for our children to work in!
Have a lovely weekend!
Best wishes,

Year 1 were set a challenge to build a house for their class animal (owl and wonky donkey). This house had to be strong enough to stand being huffed and puffed and had to try to keep out the rain. The children could choose from a wide variety of materials and think about their properties. Is the roof waterproof? What would make a strong wall? Mrs Griffiths and Miss Beadle were very impressed with the children’s creations! Well done Year 1. 3C thoroughly
enjoyed
exploring our
new library.
We browsed all the books,
made our choices and then
carefully scanned the
barcodes and our library
cards to
borrow the
books. We
can’t wait
for next
week’s
session!
This week Nursery visited the Whitestone
Gallery at St Peter's. Mrs Darmody kindly gave
us a tour of the gallery and we
looked at the fabulous art work
produced by the older
students. The
children
showed great
interest in
what they were
shown and
behaved
beautifully, the staff were very
proud! We all returned to
Nursery truly inspired by what
we had seen
and have some
great new art
projects
planned.

This week School Council interviewed Mrs Calvert and Mrs Robertshaw from the School’s Catering Department. The children asked the
visitors some super, very grown up questions and gave us lots of ‘food for thought’(!) Mrs Calvert and Mrs Robertshaw are going to look in
to some of the suggestions that the children made. Thank you very much to both of them for giving up their time to come and be ‘grilled’(!)
by our School Council!
We are so lucky in Year 2! 2H and 2S took delivery of
another riddle on Tuesday and we are all very excited
about finding out about
Georgian York! The first thing
that we have discovered is that
there was a very famous
highwayman called Dick Turpin
imprisoned in the Castle Prison,
now the Castle Museum. We
have been singing Stand and
Deliver…which Mrs Hall loves…
and writing stories about
highwaymen!
The world
record for the
number of elves
in one place at
one time was
held at Stockeld
Park at the
weekend in aid
of Martin House
Hospice.
Total 1,110
elves! Well
done.
Participants from Clifton: Florence, Ivo, Dora
and Callum
We have had a very busy week and so have our teddy bears! Our teddies
came to school and enjoyed listening to stories, playing in our super loft and
planning our picnic. Although we didn’t take our teddies to Forest School (it was too muddy), we
made dens and houses for them and had an exciting time.

2S teamed up with 2H this week to use the cookery room at St Olave’s.
They had a very busy afternoon of mixing, kneading and decorating
recipes whilst waiting for the rolls to bake. One batch of rolls was
made without yeast to see what difference yeast makes.
All agreed that the yeast does make bread much lighter
and easier to chew.
Following their visit to The Deep in Hull,
3ST have written stories about shipwrecks
and underwater archaeology and created
acrostic poems about sea creatures. They
used water colour crayons and stencils to
create sea life pictures.

St Peter’s Community Action at Christmas
Special events
This year, the Community Action Team at St
Peter’s have taken on two new projects, to run
alongside our usual Christmas events.
Firstly we are hosting a pre Christmas Fair on Saturday, 16th November from 1pm to
4pm in the Memorial Hall. This is to help raise funds for the Island Charity, which provides mentoring
support for local children. The event is well worth a visit as there will be lots of stalls for children and
their families, with competitions, crafts etc so please come along and support it if you can.
Secondly, we are appealing to your generosity over the Christmas period by asking for donations of gifts
such as chocolates, sweets and biscuits which would be suitable as prizes and presents at the parties
which we host for children and the elderly in the local community. We are not doing grocery parcels this
year, so we are hoping for donations of Christmas gifts instead. There are boxes for your donations in
the Monkey Cage at St Peter’s and in the entrances at St Olave’s and Clifton.
Thank you very much for your support.
This week in 3M we were so excited to put on our
class assembly all about the Titanic! Thank you so
much to all the parents who came to support and
watch! Here are a few
photos:
In Reception we have been preparing for
Children in Need by bringing our bears into
school for the
week. The
children have
drawn their
bears using
pencils and
watercolours
and designed
outfits for
them, giving them a ‘Pudsey Makeover’. We will finish the
week with a party which the children have planned and
have been busy
making preparations
for. They have been
wrapping pass the
parcels, making
jellies and
constructing piñatas.
