TRANSCRIPT
Monday’s assembly was led by Mrs Loftus and Miss O’Sullivan to raise
awareness of Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day 2017 was celebrated
globally on Tuesday with the slogan ‘Be the change : unite for a better internet’.
Co-ordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre the celebration sees
hundreds of organisations get involved to promote the safe and responsible use
of digital technology for children. Mrs Loftus and Miss O’Sullivan described
how to keep safe on the internet and how we can ‘surf safely’, and watch out
for sharks. They described three types of sharks:
Shark 1: See a shark swim away tell someone that very
day!
Shark 2: See a shark swim away unknown links are not
okay!
Shark 3: See a shark swim away, when online remain the
same!
They also had a song of how we all can deal with those
sharks to ensure we can all share a smile. My thanks to
Mrs Loftus and Miss O’sulivan for their wonderful
assembly – there is a display in the atrium.
On Wednesday 2S performed a marvellous assembly on their work this term
from Oliver Twist. The children described the lives of children in Victorian
times and how hard it was. They discussed the jobs that children had including
chimney sweeps and workhouse children. They then performed two
sensational songs, ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong and from
Oliver Twist ‘Who Will Buy’. The children sang beautifully with an amazing
solo from Arthur Try. The children looked stunning in their outfits and had
created brilliant props in DT during the week. Well done children and thanks
to Mrs Spencer, Mrs Franey and Mrs Hayden for preparing the children.
Following on from Safer Internet Day, on Thursday PCSO Laura Harper visited
the school to talk to the Year 2 and 3 children. Laura works with schools
across York to deliver talks on safety and this is her second visit to Clifton.
Thank you to Mrs Clarke for organising this very informative visit.
Year 1 went to the West Yorkshire Playhouse for a Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory drama workshop yesterday. The children had a great day and a huge
thanks to the parent helpers and to Miss Murray and Mrs Johnson for organising
such a great educational visit.
It has been lovely listening to the choir rehearsing for the Whole School
Foundation Concert which takes place next Thursday evening. Our children
will join the choirs of St Peter’s and St Olave’s to entertain us all. I am sure this
will be a sensational event and I am thoroughly looking forward to it.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Half Term Commences (ASC &
Co-Curricular Activities as
normal)
We have had such a busy week in 3P!
At the start of the week we read more of the Jungle Book and learnt that
Mowgli returned to the village to steal the red flower. We then went
outside and made some red flower (fire) using dry twigs and sticks. The
children then tried to make their own fire by rubbing two sticks
together!
On Wednesday we had
an Indian afternoon
where Mrs Korolkiewicz
and Rohan showed the
children some beautiful
Indian clothing and
jewellery. We then
designed our own
henna hands!
This week in maths we have been
learning about weight and mass! We
practised reading scales when making animal
cookies! YUMMY!
On Thursday we all became film
directors and producers!!
We created animal
animations...
Some of the children in Nursery have become scientists this week and enjoyed carrying out experiments. The squirrels tested a gingerbread man to see if he would be able to swim across the river to escape from the fox! They thought about the properties of the gingerbread man and everyone
agreed that he was rough and crunchy, which might make him strong. The children then predicted what might
happen when he was put in cold water and hot water. Jack said “He’ll float” and Toby said “He’ll break up in the cold water”. Maddie said “I think the hot water will make bits come off him and he will melt”. The children then carried out their experiments, making careful observations. Raphie noticed the gingerbread man changing “He’s going a white colour” and Noah said “The hot is making him break!”. Esmie noticed that the gingerbread man in cold
water floated and then sank slowly, but when she watched the gingerbread man in the hot water she said “Look he’s sinking fast and there are bits falling off!” All of the children thought really hard and had some fantastic ideas and reasons. We can’t wait to try some more super science experiments!
Choir News! The choir have been working extremely hard in preparation for their concert at St Peter's on Thursday 16th February at 6pm. I was so impressed by the children this week when they managed to sing in 5 different parts, quite a tricky thing to do when you're only 6, 7 or 8! I was even more impressed when the whole of the back row managed to fit their tune in over 4 parts without any help from myself or Mrs Headlam-Morely, great listening skills and worthy winners of the Music Award this week!
We are all looking forward to the final performance next week. There are only a few tickets left so please make sure you have got yours. Refreshments will be served before the concert from 5.30pm in the main reception at St Peter's School. Please can we have any outstanding consent forms sent back for choir members at the start of next week?
Many thanks
Mrs Hayden
This week 2H have so enjoyed their Victorian topic and have
had the opportunity to play with a delightful selection of old and treasured toys. The class favourite has to be the beautifully made toy carousel.
As the motto goes, practice makes perfect and that is certainly the case with our yoyo and diabolo skills which are coming on apace.
This week 3M have been reading more of the Jungle Book story and creating our own documentaries!
Our week began by reading the next part of the Jungle Book, where Mowgli goes to fetch ‘red flower’
to protect him from Shere Khan! He goes to the local Indian village to take some from where the
villagers are cooking. We decided it would be fun to make our own ‘red flower’ in our very own fire
pit. We then wrote some fantastic instructions on how we built it and how to be safe around fire. After
all this excitement we thought about what life would be like in the Indian village. We compared life
there to ours and had a fun-filled afternoon of designing Henna patterns, trying on Mrs Morrison’s saris,
Indian jewellery, looking at some items from India and trying lots of different Indian foods. We have
also been making our very own Planet Earth documentaries using stop motion animation. Scan the QR
codes outside our classroom to watch the videos we made! To round off all the excitement this week
we decided to bake some spiced animal biscuits. We weighed them out carefully using all the skills we
have been learning in Maths.
In French this week, Reception have continued the mini-beasts topic with a new story about “une araignée”. Spiders are a great way to practise counting, as seen on the picture! We took turns to say a number and make Chloé l’araignée go up and down the spout.
We already know about “une chenille” and “une abeille” – can you spot them in the picture?
This week in 1J we have continued our work on 2D and 3D shapes. The children have made 2D shapes from lollipop sticks using the glue gun to fix the vertices together. Then we designed some 3D models and followed our designs to make the models. Along the
way some of us had to adapt our ideas depending on what materials we could find. We evaluated our models and thought about what went well and what we could do better or improve upon. It also gave us a chance to think about how to join
models and which ways worked best. Lots of problem solving involved. An industrious week!
Mrs Hall and Mrs Headlam-Morley would just like to clarify that although World Book Day is Thursday 2nd March, we are dressing up on FRIDAY 3RD MARCH. You may also like to visit the World Book Day website which has loads of great things on and this year is celebrating its twentieth year: http://www.worldbookday.com/
2S had great
fun singing,
signing and ad
-libbing in
their assembly
on Wednesday.
Despite many
feeling a bit
off colour,
everyone was
there to dress up
in their amazing outfits and do their best to
sell their goods that they made during our DT day
last week. They had worked very hard with Mrs
Hayden’s expert guidance on her own arrangement
of the ‘Who will buy?’ song from the Oliver
musical. Well done 2S and thank you Mrs Hayden!

Year 1 have taken their class theme of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory into their dance lessons. Finding the golden ticket, being dazzled by the amazing factory and making up new sweet recipes has been a breeze for children who just love to express themselves
with fabulous facial expressions and actions.
It has been another exciting week in 1M! We have been
keeping an eager eye on the votes for our adverts and we
are pleased to announce that the winning chocolate bar
is… Cadbury’s Rocky Mallow Road! The children worked
extremely hard on their advertisements and worked well together to
produce their fantastic posters and films! Well done everyone!
We have been looking at the characters in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this week and created our very own ‘Who Am I’ games by describing their characteristics. We then read the clues to our friends to see if they could guess who we were! On Thursday we went on a trip to the West Yorkshire Playhouse where we did lots of drama activities which supported our learning in class. Thank you very much to the mummies who came with us!

RS have been thinking about being generous and thoughtful toward others. During the week the children put their doubling skills to work by doubling a variety of delicious recipes. It was then decided that we would bake some tasty Vanilla Cupcakes! However, we didn’t make them for us…
but for RL! Each child wrote a little gift tag for another child in RL, baked and decorated a cupcake. Everyone picked a name out of a hat to decide who they would give a cupcake to. They selected the colour
cupcake case, sprinkles and decorations. Each cake was lovingly packaged and tagged before being delivered to someone in RL. We all agreed it felt good to do something thoughtful for someone else and that a gesture of kindness was definately a nice feeling.
In 3C this week we have been reading our text – The Jungle Book and have created our own ‘red flower’ in a fire pit.
We then wrote some very clear instructions on how to do this making sure we used some bossy verbs!
We have tasted some Indian food, it was really nice, but some was hot and spicy and made us need a drink!
We have followed a recipe and measured out carefully the ingredients for making our animal shaped biscuits and then enjoyed with our family at home.

Dear Parents,
I am writing to let you know that tickets are now available for the next event in the Public Lecture series at
St Peter’s School.
Tickets are free and can be booked through by clicking here.
‘What are the Boffins doing about Infectious Diseases?’
Professor Mike Ferguson CBE FRS Regius Professor of Life Sciences, University of Dundee
Wednesday 15 February, 7pm in the Memorial Hall
Mike Ferguson is a researcher who specialises in parasitic diseases, like human African sleeping sickness and
malaria, and who helps to run a Drug Discovery Unit. In this lecture, Mike will explain what he and his
colleagues are doing to 'translate' fundamental discovery science into new, better and safer medicines for
infectious diseases and to tackle the spread of drug-resistant infections, which is a global challenge.
Mike Ferguson left St Peter's School in 1975 and studied Biochemistry in Manchester (BSc) and London (PhD).
He worked as a post-doctoral researcher in New York and Oxford before being appointed a lecturer at The
University of Dundee in 1988. Mike was fortunate enough to make a significant biological discovery relatively early
in his career and to have subsequently lead a sizeable research team performing both fundamental discovery science
and 'translational' applied science - making new drugs and diagnostic devices for infectious diseases. He now
also helps shape National and International biomedical research by serving on the boards of the Wellcome Trust and
the Medicines for Malaria Venture.
Wine and canapés will be served after the lecture.
Our Public Lectures have proved very popular with schools and the public and places will be reserved on a first
come, first served basis. If you have any access requirements, are hard of hearing or have any other special requests,
please book your tickets using Eventbrite, then email Mrs Sue Jenks at [email protected], stating which
event(s) you are attending and how many tickets you have booked.
Many of our events sell out, and you must bring your ticket with you to guarantee entry. Please either print off your ticket
or display it to us on your smartphone or tablet on the evening.
Further details of this and our other lectures can be found here.
This programme is run in association with the Institute of Physics and with the support of the Rotary Club of York
Vikings, the St Peter’s School Foundation and the Ogden Trust.
I do hope that you will be able to support this lecture and please do contact us if we can be of any more assistance.
Yours sincerely,
David
