2. Log inIn the next window there will be a menu of options, just click run 3. 4. File - Open 5. Open Class Choose your class 6. Notice the columns we have here : Name Password Assigning Scores - Notes 7. This is my class 702 First, I might organize this a little: You can click and drag columns left or right. In this case, I might switch Units 2 & 1, to put them in order left to right 8. To update the data in a column, click anywhere in the column, and 9. Under the Class tab, selectUpdate Selected Column ( or use the hotkey CTRL + U) 10. Adding Columns

  • Add column (choose from the ones already there)
  • Create your own
    • They can be of two types:
      • Text
      • Numerical
  • They are for two main purposes:
    • Assigning work (called sequences (RK-3)
    • Collecting scores

11. Lets add a column toassignReading K We usually only have ONE or TWO assignment columns: In grade 7 Reading K and Reading 1 In grade 8 Reading 2 12. Go to the Class tab 13. Choose a Column: Assignments 14. Scroll down till you findReading K,Reading 1, Reading 2, Reading 3 Note the file extension is .s 15. Here Im selecting the sequence readingk.s 16. Readingk.s:ASN ASN = assignment/assigning 17. To give all the students the same lesson, say unit1/lesson1, you select all (CTRL + A) Start typing unit1/lesson1(a popup window will open) Select Fill 18. For one student, William, I need to know what hes done. So, I need to insert a Folder Contents column here ***Please refer to the Inserting a Folder Contents Column tutorial 19. With a Scores Column, now I know that William is done Unit 1, and I should assign him unit2/lesson1 Note: I can also assign whole units, e.g. unit2(less book-checking ) 20. You can remove a column anytime. In this case I have a redundant Notes column I need to remove. Just select the column Class Remove Column : 21. Now that column is gone 22. Other kinds of columns 23. Notes I like to have a notes column to take note of Ss behavior, or if they need to do a lesson again for any reason, or if they can skip lessons for any reason 24. Scores - Folder Contents As the name suggests, its for keeping track of scores. The Inserting a Folder Contents Column tutorial has more on this 25. Scores - Recent 26. Status A nice tool for making sure everyone islogged in .Update the column every once in a while to see what theyre doing. 27. Heres a status column: 28. Make your own column 29. Class Create Text Column 30. Define your new column and give it an initial value(could just leave it blank) 31. Class tab add a column comments 32. Voila! a new comments column: 33. You can create number Columns for numerical values: 34. Define your digits, initial value and column name. Here Ive made a column called Typing Test 35. Heres the result. I like using the Compass spreadsheet to record all kinds of scores on numerical columns, like pronunciation, typing and reading scores: 36.

  • Its important we know what the lessons are like, and what the students are facing in the sequence. In order to do the lesson yourself, you need to preview. Heres how its done

Previewing lessons 37. 38. Instead of class Open a sequence 39. Lets open readingk.s 40. Choose a Unit Click on the folder icon Lets choose Unit 1 41. Choose a lesson to preview. Again, click on the folder icon you want Lets choose Lesson 1 42. Heres the entire lesson sequence, with each section listed. This is the part the students always get confused with no wonder! 43. Now, under the SEQUENCE tab, scroll down the menu to Preview Selection The lesson will begin as it does for the student, but only the sequence youve chosen. In this case, Explore. You can choose to see the smallest bit of a sequence, or a whole lesson. Just click on the folder icon you want, and preview selection. I sometimes use this to go over a lesson with some Ss at my computer. Also note that you can assign only a bit of a sequence, too, but the sequence must be typed exactly as it is here, in the folder structure, if that makes any sense! e.g. unit1/lesson1/sounds_w 44. Student Summary Report There are a variety of student reports.Ive only found two (Student Summary Report; Activity Report) to be of value, but do check them out you may find a use for one of them I havent. What follows is how to get the SSR (Student Summary Report), which we use to get an average grade for all work completed in Compass for a whole semester or year. The are found under the Teacher tab 45. 46. 47. Choose the sequence you want. Be sure to report from September (the previous year) through to June (of the current year) Be sure to preview first, before you print 48. Always save your work (CTRL + S)
