OY4 (Sprint) EITI was scheduled to set a sprint OY later in the year on the Horseshoe Bend map. But a gap in

the programme and the availability of the EIT meant my event moved forward a bit.EIT had been locked out of use for about a year as it was reserved for the sprint at the Na-

tional Secondary Schools. However all our planning failed to take into account that the secondaryschool sprint takes place on a week day and there would be students and staff wandering around, making running a sprint there impossible.

In the end the changes in maps turned out OK, with the secondary school nationals eventmoved to the popular Splash Planet map that was provided by the Sprint the Bay team. I then got toset my OY event on the excellent EIT sprint map. The map did need updating to cope with the everchanging EIT layout however. Luckily Duncan Morrison was able to provide some last min- utehelp in this area as the map was due to be re-mapped anyway.

Duncan advised that I should try to make virtually every route choice a 50/50 decision. Forexample, to get to the next control , it should be a close choice of whether to go left or right. Withthat in mind the courses quickly started forming, except the white.

My vetter for the event was Murray Harty, who kindly offered to help after all the work hehad done earlier in the year for the Oceania event at the Slump. After walking around and discuss-ing the white course with him I added more controls to keep to the rule that there should be a con-trol at all the white course decision points. This was quite a few when you take into account all thepath junctions at EIT.

Setup all took place on the day, but it was certainly different from a farm map. Having allthe controls in such a small area was great. The weather turned out fine, if a little windy - the cara-van awning repeatedly tried to take off during the event. We have had some issues with turning thegrass areas to mud at EIT at previous events so the dry week leading up to the event was also verywelcome.

Murray managed the 1 minute starts with efficiency so that I had time to oversee my gadg-ets. This was the first event to use the tablet for the new self-registration system. A practice that hasnow been adopted by 2 Auckland clubs and as well as a club in both Australia and the US.

See http://www.bendigo-orienteers.com.au/ for a report by one of their members on thesetup we are now very used to seeing at our events.

Big thanks to Murray for the help and advice in making the event a success. Also to ChrisBeckman who did a great job making the sawhorse controls for the Oceania Carnival that were alsoused at my EIT event. Phillip Herries

5Over the HillThe day started with a thick fog in the Tukituki valley with picturesque views

from the hill tops as we put out the controls. This was my second course but the firstrural one with a range of courses. I'm still very much in the learning phase and haveappreciated all the assistance, support and encouragement from the more experi-enced and especially those who ran and enjoyed the course.

My first visit to the area was rather alarming as the most interesting parts ofthe map were also the most out of date. As a result we were restricted primarily tothe farm land. The rest of the map could do with a good overhaul sometime to allowfor some better options on this map. To compensate for the ease of navigation thered courses were made fairly physical :-) Leg 8 (1.2km) in the Red Medium was a lateaddition to avoid some ordinary legs to the south. The medium was also set on thelongish side since there was no Long. It turned out a warm and sunny day for theevent and was well attended. The courses included:

White: 2km, 29 runnersYellow: 2.6km, 35 runners Orange:3.9km, 28 runnersRed Short: 3.5km, 24 runners RedMedium: 5.9km, 30 runners

There was no mis-punching in red. The one mp in Orange and those in Yellowand White were mostly due to an emergency closure of part of the map. It seems wehad a few livestock that wanted to join in the race!

Thanks to the team that made it all happen: Devon Beckman as vetter; ChrisBeckman for setup/packdown; David Fisher for the mapping changes; the Herries andPam for all their work on the day; and Jackson who helped set out the course andmanned the start. Also Stefan and Callum for hanging around to get everything tidiedup afterwards. And Roger Mulvay - land owner liaison - taking the rap for me whenthe livestock bolted!! As I said - a great learning experience!

Pukeora ScoreI want to thank some people as it is traditional it seems,So first of all I'd like to say thank you very much to Jon Eames.Jon tweaked this, adjusted that, walked the course and made it better,That's because he was my right hand man or more specifically he was my vetter. You made it very interesting and helped me with the odd technical matter,But more importantly you helped make it fun with some laughs and crazy chatter. We•shared•a•bit•about•each•other’s•lives•but•wouldn't•say•inside•and•out, Because Ican't confess to be a doctor now, that's without a doubt. It's a shame the event wasn't at Te Mata as originally planned,So Jon did quite a bit of travelling to give me a hand.He didn't mind and said it was all part of the drill,So we made the most of the little map on Pukeora Hill. When I sat at the computer to set the whole thing up,The weather outside was stunning as I sipped from my coffee cup.But the day we put out the controls and the day of the event,Wind and rain and no sun at all is what nature sent.Although it doesn't really matter what the weather decides to do,The experience, the learning and the giving back is what's good for you.I had a couple of issues with Condes or perhaps that's vice versa,So some help was needed to prevent things from getting any worser.I made a call to the man who can make Condes behave,Thank you very much Mr Fisher or can I call you Dave.Roger phoned landowners, farmers, clubs and the like,So all of you runners didn't collide with the odd stray mountain bike.Pamela worked the computer of which we all have a fear,Thank you very much for your efforts year after year.Phillip set up banners, notice boards and electronic stuff,Of which I don't think you can be thanked enough. And out of the rain in the caravan like a safe little haven,Greeting everyone with a smile I'm sure was the one and only Tui Craven. When it was time to pack up once everyone did depart,The Creagh family collected controls out of the kindness of their heart. Finally a big thank you to all of you who came,Because obviously without you the event just isn't the same. You took precious time out of your day and got into your car,And travelled from so near and from so very, very far.In summary setting a course is character building plus some fun,It makes orienteering much more complete and not just a run.You get to meet fellow members you may have never met before,And even make a friend or two or maybe even more.Quite simply my suggestion is to just have a go,And enjoy other aspects of orienteering you didn't even know.

Thank you. Henry Porter

11OY5 WhanawhanaWhen the fixtures list came out, this event was the OY score. Great, I said to myself

enthusiastically. I can do all sorts of things, put out slightly different controls for yellows andreds and try to distract some people into following someone on a different course, which isseldom a feature of score events. Then there was a big kerfuffle and the fixture list changed andmy initial ideas died quietly in my dreams.

Fine, I said to myself calmly. Normal OY – let’s•look•at•the•map•and,•yes,•there’s•areally•nice•area•just•there.•In•fact,•isn’t•that•where•I•came•horrendously•unstuck•last•time?•Weshould go back into there and catch some more weary and unwary travellers. I planned mycourse and ran them past my vetter Callum, treading the fine line between pupil and master. Some alterations followed, including trimming my 1.8k mega leg, before Roger kindly con-tacted the land owners. But there was a bit of a problem and that nice area where I came un-stuck•had•come•unstuck:•out•of•bounds,•can’t•use•it•and•my•second•thoughts•were•a•brace•ofdead ducks.

All•good,•I•said•to•myself•through•grinding•dentures.•Here’s•my•third•attempt•and•thistime•I’ll•do•two•– a modification of my earlier course and a brand new one on another part ofthe•map.•They•can’t•both•be•unusable.•And•they•weren’t.•Neither•one.•Which•left•me•thinkingabout•which•one•to•use.•I•immediately•deferred•the•decision•until•I’d•visited•the•map.

On•a•fine•winter’s•day,•I•drove•out•to•Whanawhana•to•meet•the•landowners•and•to•explorethe courses. I ended up spending an hour chatting to Bill about his grandfather the Sop- withCamel pilot before I ran around his farm. Then Henry took me for a blast around his farmon his quad bike – an experience in equal measures exhilarating and alarming. Some trees hadbeen felled and there were a few other changes. I took the judicious response to these variancesin the map: I re-routed the courses away from them, leaving the problems for some more con-scientious soul to update.

I then consulted with my vetter and we decided to go with the courses south ofWhanawhana Road, off Kotahuni Road. We worked up a final draft and patted each other on theback. Then I got home and fretted about the climb. I had more or less run the Red Long with myGPS and it was close to 500m over 8.0k. I moved the start 10 contours up the hill and fiddledsome more to compensate for the loss of distance, making the courses a bit more con- voluted inthe more technical areas and shaving off a bit more climb. Then I sent it off toCallum•again.•Oh•how•he•hated•me.•(As•Keri•Hulme•said,•“I•never•finish•revising:•I•just•reachthe•publisher’s•deadline.”)•Back•came•his•ideas,•some•of•which•I•adopted•and•some•of•which•Irevised again. Eventually, we stopped fiddling until we had had a final look about.

That final look about was in quite different weather to my early look –wet and slipperyand buckets of fun. Occasionally we suffered at the hands of a malevolent electric fence and aspiteful patch of nettle but generally I giggled like a pantomime villain as we slithered downslopes and sloshed through swamps. Callum tickled the course until it tightened up a bit more.On the drive home, he scribbled incomprehensible reminders about what final changes wewere•making.•Then•I•sent•the•maps•off•to•David•to•arrange•printing.•(There’s•a•story•to•be•toldthere•too•but•I•won’t.•Suffice•to•say•David•sorted•it•with•the•minimum•of•fuss•and•the•maximumof effect.)

There were two final obstacles on the last Thursday. After much pressure, Callumagreed•that•he•would•try•to•rearrange•his•Saturday•so•he•didn’t•have•to•come•out•to•the•event•ina•separate•car.•Worse•was•that•the•landowner,•who’d•assured•me•electric•fences•were•no•problem,•had•a•thought•that•maybe•the•yellow•course•might•have•to•cross•a•couple•that•he•couldn’t

adjust. I told him that if they could be off then great; if not, the yellows would have to suck itup or run orange. As it transpired, no-one was electrocuted.

The weather forecast was for rain but as we put out controls on Saturday bright sunshinewas on the menu. We hoped for a similarly tasty Sunday. It was not to be. While the appetiserwas sun, the main course was drizzle with a side order of forlorn hope and rain for dessert. Evenso, 150 patrons splashed around our soggy courses.

I was pleased to get out on the course and watch a number of route choices: Faye ran fourconsecutive legs by what I would have considered pretty much the optimum routes; Winsplitsbacks me up as she had a first, two seconds and a third on those legs. Some of the maps fellapart and we had way too many white runners – 27 for 20 maps. While we waited for the LeeFamily (I think) to recycle some from the start, Lily and I had a great wee chat.

Callum, Ieuan and Devon had time for a downhill championship from the repeater on thehighest hill to the finish flag – 900m in 3:30. Control collection was running smoothly until thelast collectors came in: where was control 117? So back out I went to pick it up.

Very few people spoke to me after the event. I have no idea why. Notorious mud-bunnies John C and Pamela loved it, of course, but the consensus was that the courses weretough. I hope that meant navigationally more than physically. If it was the former, good; if itwas•the•latter,•I’m•sorry.•Please•tell•me•what•I•might•have•done•differently•and•next•time•I•willrespond.•(For•example,•I•put•in•the•long•legs•because•Derek•was•lamenting•a•“good•long•OYwith•a•2k•leg.”)•See•what•happens•next•year.

Finally, some thanks are due. Foremost, thank you to the landowners, especially Bill; it isan honour to use your home and business for our pleasure. Thanks to those cogs of the welloiled machine that is the HBOC who helped us on the day: Rory, Jeannie and Kim on the cara-van; Katherine, Nat and Ferdinand for control collection; all those who put up banners and tentsat the start of the day or who pulled them down at the end. Thanks to Phillip and Jane who did1001 things while I loafed around up at the start boxes. Lastly thanks to Callum: for vetting, driving me around, towing the caravan, putting out the radios and generally being goodcompany.•I’m•sure•I•wasn’t•his•first•choice•for•a•course•setter•but•he•whipped•me•into•shapeanyway. 15President’s ReportWe are over half way through what has been a busy year for our club. Kicking off with

the Oceania and World Cup races, Sprint the Bay, members helping out with Katoa Po, the HBSchools events, and then hosting the New Zealand Secondary Schools. It has been a lot to ask ofour members to undertake such a workload, but I am very thankful to all those that took on thejobs and helped produce such high calibre events. So many people contributed so much that if Istart to list people I am bound to upset someone by leaving them out. However if you look at myrecent results on the courses I hope you accept this reflects on my memory issues rather than ontheir contribution.

I thanked the setters and vetters for their contribution at the AGM, but again thanks toMark, Hamish, Murray, Derek and Ken for their work at Oceania. A few others that I feel Ineed•to•mention•to•ensure•you•know•of•the•contribution•that•I•feel•they•made• …

David Fisher – Did the incredible job of the registration website for Oceania includingsatisfying all the credit card processing rules.

Stephan Alsleben – organised all the setting up of the events centres, both for Oceaniaand the Schools events. This was a huge job for him and his crew.

Rob McDonald and Norris Cox – rescued me by very early in the lead-up, volunteeringtheir extensive experience to handle the starts for Oceania.

Jo Eames – for•her•tremendous•work•organising•the•NZ•Nationals•in•Hawke’s•Bay•in2011. This helped create a club that had the culture, experience, and skill to make the followinglarge events so much easier and successful.

Tim Anderson – Provided an amazing amount of his time to help with my IT gear for allthe•events•as•well•as•providing•a•School•Principal’s•sense•of•authority•when•needed.

Catherine Howell – for taking on and successfully managing the big tasks of both theHB Schools and NZ Schools events in her first year as schools co-ordinator.

And to my wife, Jane, for all the personnel organisation she did in getting club membersto help out for all the 2013 events. Also for the advice and guidance when needed.

As stated earlier, a lot of you provided your time and often your ability to take part if theevents as a willing sacrifice for the club, for which I am very grateful. Elsewhere in this issue ofCompass Points you will find a reference to some of the orienteering events coming up in thenear future. With a lot of these taking place not far away and with a clean conscience of havingdone our bit, I encourage you to take part in these events and just enjoy your orienteer- ing.

You would have all seen the new website that our Webmaster, David Fisher, has setupfor•us.•I•can•only•presume•this•would•have•taken•weeks•and•weeks•of•work•on•David’s•part.•It isa tremendous resource of knowledge that is now even easier to access so I recommend you allhave a browse through it. It also provides a good platform for the club for the future that isalready providing expanded capabilities over the old site.

The club Facebook page has also been revitalised this year as another medium for help-ing•with•communication•amongst•our•members•and•supporters.•Click•the•“f”•icon•on•the•clubwebsite•to•visit•the•club’s•Facebook•page.

After a tremendous run of good weather for our events, the last few events have re-minded us that ours is an all-weather•sport.•Don’t•let•a•few•grey•clouds•stop•you•from•comingout•to•events•though.•If•you•are•anything•like•me•during•Devon’s•recent•event•at•Smedley,•thesurrounding weather was the last thing on my mind while I was actually out on the course.

Phillip Herries – Club President.

TACK ALLIHOP!..Or as you would say down under "cheers everybody!" I really mean it.

Thank•you•all•Hawke’s•Bayians•for•taking•care•of•me•while•on•my•world•tourof•New•Zealand.•I've•had•a•fantastic•time•in•New•Zealand•and•Hawke’s•Bay.Funny enough it's all thanks to a lucky fluke. If I had never heard, on the SprintThe•Bay•party,•that•Hawke’s•Bay•needed•another•coach•on•the•camp•whoknows where I would've ended up...

Lucky enough I picked up the phone and accidentally woke up DuncanMorrison (1pm) who probably hadn't had a full, or even half, night of sleep inweeks. He said he was gonna check with Uncle Geoff. And after a couple ofhours, of what I guess was hard research about what random tossa who'd justapplied for the coach position, he called me back and said I met the criteria.

The camp offered plenty of trainings, food and company. All of greatquality. I enjoyed being a coach and tried my best to forward my knowledge tomy young apprentices. It was a great pleasure to see their improvements. When

Gustav Bergman arrived I, amongothers, became even more inspiredand I got some really good train-ing myself with him and Duncan. After the camp I've participated inmost of the summer series and clubtrainings which I really en- joyed.I'm impressed with the or-ganisation of this club and proudto•be•a•Hawke’s•Bay•member.•Theonly bad thing is that you lack for-est. If you ever make the wisechoice to come up north you are allmost welcome to come visit me inSweden and try some realorienteering. Finally I want to send an extrathank you to the Morrisons fortheir excellent hospitality. Livingwith you guys has been sweet as!

Keep up the good training!Jakob

A New Zealand secondary school team was subsequently chosen to compete in the Aus-tralian school championships in Canberra in October. 19Relay Setter’s ReportInitially I was booked in to do an OY later in the

year but with the impending birth of our second child onthe same day I thought this was my ticket out of doingone•for•the•year…I•was•wrong.

A new event was found for me which happened tobe the New Zealand Secondary Schools Relays! The OYwas starting to sound good despite the timing. I had nevereven seen a relay, let alone set one before. Luckily myvetter was Pamela Morrison, who had plenty of experi-ence with relays and ensured me that it would be easy.

The map was Gruinard and what a wonderful site itwas, with 360 degree view of Te Mata Peak, Mt Erin andMt Kahuranaki.

Pam was going to be away for a bit leading up tothe•event•so•we•decided•to•get•into•it•early…brilliant idea.Despite being a NZ SS Event, it was the most re- laxedand stress free one I have set, and a lot of that was downto not leaving it until the last minute, which may havebeen the problem with my previous events!

We were very lucky to have beautiful weather whilesetting the event as well as on the day. The biggest

break-through whilesetting was Pam sug-gesting that we movedthe event centre overinto a paddock whichhad a bit more eleva-tion. This gave us afantastic spectatorsviewing area along witha natural chute to funnelrunners to the finish. The site was extremelywell set out for the mul-titude of white and yel-low courses required, but was a bit harderfinding good sites forthe orange courses.

20

There were some good areason the farm but a lot of theseareas we could not useas•with•the•limited•km’s•wecould not stretch out veryfar. Despite this, I was stillvery happy with how theyturned out.

There was a little bitof rain prior to the eventwhich made the event a lit-tle bit boggy but this justadded•to•the•fun…nothinglike a bit of mud for an extrachallenge. The event finishchute was heading down hillwhich did make for someinteresting finishes as run-ners tried to work out how tostop quickly!

Another reason whyit was an easy and reasona-bly stress free event to set

was due to the huge numberof volunteers who did ahuge amount of organising, setting up the event centre, and•clean•up•at•the•end…ahuge thank you to all thoseinvolved, with a specialthanks to Pamela Morrisonand Catherine Howell.I hope everyone involvedhad a great time

Cheers…Cairn•Coghill
