Being People of the Big Circle

For all of us there are circles of connection. For some, those circles may be small and

tight. For others they are large and do not have the same hard edge that shuts others

out. Having large open circles fills our space with vibrance and diversity. It is a relaxed,

creative space where people can grow. There is safety and fun. The focus is on the

needs of others rather than ourselves.

As we start a new year, it is important to learn to expand our circles. We need to be

conscious of those who may be on the fringe. Simple things of including people in

conversations or activities can be life changing. The good news for us is that God freely

includes all of us in His circle of love. Because we are given so much, we are free to

reach out to others.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Principal’s Log

Mr Kerry Neill gave a vibrant and unique welcome to country

at the first Year 6-12 assembly. As a representative of the

Gubbi Gubbi people, Kerry reminded us to be respectful of the

contribution and place of all people and to enjoy living in such

a great country. We look forward to extending our

connections with our local indigenous community.

The value of parents being strongly connected to children’s

places of learning has been highlighted regularly through

research. Parents who are well informed and connected are

equipped to provide age appropriate support and

encouragement to their children. This makes a significant

difference to children’s learning. Ways to be informed include

reading all communication thoroughly and taking advantage of

parent information evenings. In this way, parents are fully

aware of all of the opportunities.

There are a number of information evenings at the start of the

year. It has been very good to see parents and senior

students already use these opportunities to learn about the

rich learning partnership that Pacific provides. Thank you to

Miss Stone, Ms Arahill and Mrs Reid for their leadership of the

Year 11 evening and Mr Druery, Mrs Zweck and the Prep -

Year 5 staff for their leadership of the P-5 night. I would

encourage all Year 10, 12, and Middle College parents and

senior students to be aware of the timing for their evenings

and take the opportunity to attend. Mrs Zweck’s article in the

Head of Teaching and Learning K-5 section of the newsletter

provides good suggestions for parents of all ages.

Some families and students may be aware that Mr Hopkins

has resigned due to ill health earlier this week. We are

currently interviewing potential candidates to fill this position.

Mr Hopkins made a very valuable contribution to the college

in the establishment of the Industrial Technology area.

Starting off in a shed, Mr Hopkins gave strong, patient

leadership to the establishment of the department which now

provides unique and distinctive opportunities for students.

Students have greatly valued the care Mr Hopkins provided to

them over many years. We wish Mr Hopkins all the best.

Applications for Middle and Senior College scholarships are

now open and families are encouraged to visit the website for

details of how to apply:

May God provide us with the capacity and heart to broaden

our circles to be inclusive and supportive of others. We

continue to pray for those affected by the recent flooding and

storm damage. We will share with the community next week

ways in which we can support people in need.

How Connected are You?

“If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If

you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step

forward, you’re always in the same place.” Nora Roberts

I extend a warm welcome back to all students and their

families. As the term starts, it is important that students have

established routines and good practices for themselves for the

academic year. In particular, it is imperative to maintain a

good balance between work, social life, exercise and nutrition.

This week, my article will focus on connectedness.

Community Connectedness: Getting Involved!

An important component in the development of students is

inspiring in them, the adopting of a sense of civic

responsibility to the communities they live in. Volunteering

their time in assisting others and engaging in service learning

activities is a pursuit that will benefit their personal growth and

lifelong experiences immensely. There are college events

throughout the year with which both parents and students can

connect and be involved. Please keep an eye and ear out for

notices both in the newsletter and at assemblies, as such

opportunities will be communicated throughout the year.

Where are They Now?

We are interested in hearing from

and connecting with Old

Collegians (past graduands) of

Pacific Lutheran College. More

information about this will be

advertised in coming newsletters.

Where are they now??? We will

start writing about this soon . . .

Senior College Parent Information Evenings

I would like to thank Year 11 parents and students who

attended the parent information evening on Tuesday, 5th

February. It is pleasing to have parents continued support

and connectedness during their student’s journey through

senior school. In the hour presentation, there was key

information presented for parents and students alike. By

request, a copy of the presentation was emailed or hard copy

sent to Year 11 parents. If you were not able to attend this

Page 3: COMPASS - Pacific Lutheran College...Nora Roberts I extend a warm welcome back to all students and their families. As the term starts, it is important that students have established

evening, I encourage you to discuss the information with your

student. If there is anything you need clarified, please contact

the college.

Parents and students in Year 12 are asked to attend the

parent information evening on Tuesday, 19th February starting

at 7.00pm. This will be an informative night as students begin

their final year of schooling.

Parents and students in Year 10 are asked to attend the

parent information evening on Tuesday, 26th February starting

at 7.00pm. This will be an informative night as students begin

their transition into senior schooling.

Year 12 Leadership

Prior to the commencement of school, the Senior College

leaders participated in the Lutheran Youth of Queensland’s

Enthuse 2013 program at Luther Heights. The purpose of

Enthuse 2013, was to equip, empower and inspire young

leaders to servant leadership. The 2013 College and Vice

College Captains have reflected upon their experiences from

this camp (please refer below).

Year 12 Leadership Day: Year level

Connectedness

This week, Year 12 students participated in a leadership day.

This day continued to build on established leadership

principles and learnt concepts from last year’s leadership

discussions. Students actively participated in activities which

were strategically organised to give them an opportunity to

use a range of skills; but particularly, team work skills,

leadership skills and reflective skills.

I would like to extend thanks to the Lutheran Youth of

Queensland team: Juliette, Emma, Josh and Josh (JT) for

running this day. Particularly, I would like to wish Emma

Graetz, Leadership Trainer, Lutheran Youth of Queensland all

of the best as she moves to South Australia to embark on a

new pathway in working with others to pass on her experience

and wealth of knowledge in leadership. I look forward to

working with the Year 12 students throughout the year to

continue sharing their skills.

Enthuse Leadership Camp

On the last week of holidays, the College Captains of 2013

were fortunate enough to participate at the leadership camp

Enthuse 2013 at Luther Heights in Coolum. Leaders from

other Lutheran schools located all over Queensland partook in

the five-day long camp.

When we arrived at camp, it was obvious that this was no

ordinary school camp. Our “classes” took place on pillows

and mattresses and we participated in leadership activities to

assist our learning. Soon after we arrived, we were put into

smaller groups of around 10 people from other schools. We

learnt that in order to lead others, we must first lead

ourselves, and in order to lead ourselves we must trust in our

own ability with the assistance of others. Hence, this lesson

was followed by a series of trust activities with our smaller

groups.

These activities were difficult and a little daunting to most of

us as we were unfamiliar with the other members of our

group; however, the more of these activities we participated

in, the more we began to trust our groups and built a solid

foundation for friendships to be formed.

On the second day of camp we learnt about how we think and

how to best lead others. We were taught tips on how to be

successful in all areas of life, including leadership, school

work and serving others, as well as tips on how to combat bad

habits and fear.

Later in the day, we did high rope activities with our smaller

groups. Whilst some people went to the flying fox and the

leap of faith, others, such as us, went to the high ropes. This

was thrilling for some, but tested our ability to overcome our

fears, even if we had done it before. This was an incredible

challenge to overcome but, with the help and encouragement

of our new friends, it was a lot easier to conquer.

On day three, our facilitators had us building rafts from

bamboo, ropes and empty water containers as part of an

activity. This was quite a challenge, as we had to venture

about 10 metres through the water with all of us on board in

less than 40 minutes. This task required us to use leadership

and teamwork skills as we all had to work together.

Our final night was spent planning an elegant dinner and a

farewell party. Each person pitched in on setting up the

dining hall and the party room, which looked fantastic. The

night was full of laughs and fun, with a tinge of sadness due to

the fact we had to depart the next day.

The final day began with a lesson on how to lead others. We

collated all of our experiences throughout the camp and

reflected on what we had learnt. Our lunch was spent

laughing and saying goodbye as we prepared to leave the

camp. This was incredibly sad since all of us had made new

friends, which I am sure we will cherish forever.

Overall, the experience was amazing, with terrific food,

incredible people and a supportive atmosphere. Any of the

future leaders will be blessed to be a part of Enthuse and we

hope to share our experiences with the Pacific community.

Sinead Anderson, Carl Jonsson, Taylah Walker, Ellie Jordan

and James Milligan - 2013 College and Vice College

Captains.

From the Head of Teaching

and Learning K-5

Thank you for the important job that you play in promoting

excellence as a habit for life with your child.

When parents are involved in their children's education, both

children and parents benefit. Researchers report that parent

participation in their children's schooling frequently:

enhances children's self-esteem,

improves children's academic achievement,

improves parent-child relationships,

helps parents develop positive attitudes towards school,

a better understanding of the schooling process.

Most important of all, ALL parents and families can enjoy

these benefits. It does not matter how much money you

have. It does not matter how much formal education you have

had yourself or how well you did in school. Family

involvement benefits children in all year levels.

What is "Family Involvement in Education"?

It is a lot of different types of activities. Some parents

and families may have the time to get involved in many

ways. Others may only have the time for one or two

activities. But whatever your level of involvement,

remember: if you get involved and stay involved, you

can make a world of difference.

Page 5: COMPASS - Pacific Lutheran College...Nora Roberts I extend a warm welcome back to all students and their families. As the term starts, it is important that students have established

COMPASS

NO 292 | FEBRUARY 2013

Family involvement in education can mean: reading a

bedtime story to your preschool child, hearing reading

with an older child, checking homework every night,

getting involved in Friends of Pacific, coming to

assembly and chapel, discussing your children's

progress with teachers, limiting TV viewing on school

nights, insisting on high standards of behavior for

children.

Family involvement can be as simple as asking your

children, "How was school today?" But ask every day.

That will send your children the clear message that their

schoolwork is important to you and you expect them to

learn and do their best.

Many children and parents are yearning for this kind of

togetherness these days. Among students aged 8 to 13,

for example, 82% say they would like to talk to their

parents more about their homework!

Pacific has clear, challenging standards for what students

should know and do, how they should work together, how

they should grow as spiritual people and how they should

learn. Working together we can encourage them never to

settle for doing less than their best!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

Before and After School Supervision

Parents are reminded that playground supervision

commences at 8.00am each morning. Children who are

dropped at school before 8.00am need to be placed in outside

school hour’s care. If students in Years P-5 are on the school

grounds prior to 8.00am, they will be placed in before school

hours care, unless parents have previously contacted the

college to discuss alternative arrangements.

Parents are also asked to ensure that children are not

unsupervised, on verandahs or on play equipment after

3.30pm each afternoon. From 3.30pm, these areas are

registered for use only by children attending after school

hour’s care.

Peanuts and Nut Products

A number of students in the P-5 section of the college suffer

from a variety of food allergies including allergies to seafood

(including fish), insect bites, eggs and particularly peanuts

and nut products. I would like to remind parents that the

college encourages parents and children not to bring

particularly nuts or nut products in lunches. Some students

attending the college can experience a life threatening

reaction if exposed to these food items. In some cases,

simple skin contact with nut products can cause a severe

reaction in these children. I would remind parents that if your

child suffers from food allergies to advise your child’s teacher.

Changes to the Child

Protection Policy

At the end of last year, there were some changes to the state’s

Child Protection Legislation that impacts directly on Non-State

Schools in Queensland. These changes state that:

if a college staff member reasonably suspects, in the course

of their employment, that a student is likely to be sexually

abused by another person - that staff member must give a

written report of the suspicions to the principal, and

the principal must immediately give a copy of any written

report received to a police officer.

These changes have been amended in our college Child

Protection Policy, which you can view on the college website

via the following link:

_lounge/policies/). In addition, staff are currently undergoing

training in accordance with the new amendments.

Maths Moment

Maths Puzzle of the Week

Congratulations to Noah Cotterell and Jack Hirst (Year 8) and

Mitchell Jones (Year 10) for solving our first puzzle with the

matchsticks.

Here is our second problem for the year:

101 – 102 = 1

The statement above is incorrect.

Can you make it correct by simply moving one digit to a new

position? (Think outside the square!)

Email your solution to [email protected]

Calculators

Having a calculator and learning its many functions to assist

with more complex mathematical concepts is a requirement

for all students in Years 7-12. The expectation is to purchase

a scientific calculator (fx-82MS) for Years 7-9 and senior

Maths A or Prevocational Maths students. A graphics

calculator (fx-9860GAUPlus) is necessary to complete the

senior syllabus requirements for Maths B and C students.

Students who study Year 10 Pre-Maths B have the option of

purchasing the graphics calculator during Year 10, as this will

give them many more opportunities to hone their skills in

preparation for senior Maths B. For a graphics calculator

note, come to S-Block staffroom for myself or ask their Maths

teacher.

Maths Tutoring

The college wants to support students academically and

again have tutorials for students in Years 7 to 12 who would

like extra assistance or clarification of concepts in

Mathematics.

These tutorials are on Thursday lunchtimes (in room L14) or

Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4.30pm in room L14 and

are supported by Mathematics teachers on a rostered system.

Students are welcome to come along for a quiet place to

complete Maths classwork, homework or ask for assistance.

The expectation is that they work quietly and not be

disruptive, and that they remain within the room until 4.30pm

or are picked up earlier by a parent. The section in the

Student Handbook on page 178 is to be filled in if you would

like your child to attend.

Pacific Soccer Update

Sign-On for 2013 season

Last Saturday morning, Pacific

Soccer hosted Just for Kicks at Pacific, which

allowed us to introduce many new players to our

sport. It was a wonderful morning and the

spectators all enjoyed seeing so many children

having fun with various games and activities and

learning a little more about the game. We would also like to

welcome our newly registered players to Pacific Soccer and

we all look forward to seeing them playing with their team

mates on the field from Saturday, 9th

March.

Page 9: COMPASS - Pacific Lutheran College...Nora Roberts I extend a warm welcome back to all students and their families. As the term starts, it is important that students have established

COMPASS

NO 292 | FEBRUARY 2013

We would also like to welcome back many existing players,

who also took advantage of the early-bird registration last

Saturday, and re-signed with Pacific Soccer for the 2013

season.

Our last sign-on day for 2013 will be held tomorrow morning

(9th

February) at Pacific so, if you have not registered yet and

would like to play, please come along tomorrow morning. We

will have tables set up outside the Prep building at Pacific,

from 9.00am - 12 noon.

For more information regarding sign-on, please refer to the

flyer at the back of the newsletter.

Places Available with Pacific Soccer

Pacific Soccer will be registering many teams this year in age

groups from U6 to U15. If your child is turning 5 during 2013

(born 2008 or earlier), they are eligible to play for Pacific

Soccer and we would love to have you join us for the 2013

season.

Pacific Soccer has always encouraged and welcomed boys

and girls to our sport. In 2012, we were privileged to have the

U13 Seahorses participate as our first all-girls team, and they

received a tremendous response from all of our spectators

and many other clubs, for the passion, commitment and

teamwork shown by the players throughout their entire

season. SCCSA rules allow girls to automatically play down

one grade, so if you would like to play with your friends in a

Pacific Soccer team this year, please let us know and come

along to our registration days.

Equipment Required for Pacific Soccer

Players

Players are required to have soccer boots and shin guards for

training and for all matches. Socks and shorts can be

purchased from Pacific’s Uniform Shop. Our Pacific Soccer

training shirts have been very popular, and are usually worn

for training, and to and from the game on Saturday. Match

jerseys are supplied by Pacific Soccer and will be brought to

each game by the team manager.

A-Mart All Sports

A-Mart All Sports Kawana has

offered a 20% off Discount

Weekend for Pacific Soccer players, which will be held from

Thursday, 14th to Sunday, 17

th February.

If you need new sporting equipment, please delay these

purchases until you have registered with Pacific Soccer. A-

Mart All Sports has been a long-term supporter of Pacific

Soccer and have provided discounts for our families, and all

purchases which are made also benefit Pacific Soccer, when

we buy our equipment.

Coaches and Managers

For the 2013 season, we are pleased to welcome Mr David

Becker, as our Director of Coaching. David’s role is to

provide assistance and guidance for our coaching staff, to

allow each team to develop throughout the season and to

achieve to their maximum potential.

If you would like to share your child’s excitement and passion

for their sport and become more involved with our team as

either a coach or a manager, please let us know. SCCSA

offer free coaching clinics, which are designed to introduce

drills and ideas for new and existing coaches. Even if you

have not been involved as a coach or a manager before, I am

sure that with David’s support and his knowledge and

experience, you can also provide a valuable contribution to

your team. The active involvement of our parents within each

team will also benefit all our players as they continue to learn

new skills and to grow throughout this season and beyond.

Pacific Soccer can only operate with the ongoing assistance

from our parents and volunteers. Therefore I would like to

acknowledge the generosity of the current committee

members and the many parents who have already offered to

take on the role as a coach or manager, and I thank you all for

kindly giving some of your valuable time to be part of Pacific

Soccer.

To complete our committee for 2013, we still require a

Secretary and a Vice President. If you would like to be part of

the Pacific Soccer committee for this season, your

contribution will be greatly appreciated by the club and, of

course, by our players and will help Pacific Soccer to continue

to grow into the future.
