Club Coaching Day—Te Awanga

The next mid-week orienteering event seems to come around really fast so to then have

the first Sunday event to organise as well seemed a daunting task. Te Awanga was an ideal venue

for newcomers with its valley of small paddocks providing good navigation for the yellow and

white courses. I had planned to re-use some previous courses on this map for the training day as I

didn‘t have the time to control site check and needed to be confident the features were there. The

whites, yellows and oranges were based on some courses from an event in 2012 while the red

courses went back to the 2008 HB School Champs event. Some modification went on to make sure

they were appropriate for the intended audience along with re-arranging the start and finish posi-

tion on the red courses.

After a last minute call for help, Geoff and Pamela came to my aid with some advice on

courses on the Friday night, after which I hoped things would be good to go. Saturday was thank-

fully quiet work wise so I managed to get around all the control sites in the morning, deal with

work issues at lunch time, then go out again with Jane and start putting the controls out in the late

afternoon. Going through the forest for the second time that day, I was certainly a lot slower than

the first.

After the morning‘s reconnaissance, I moved the start away from the beehives and

changed one of the last red controls due to some stock/property issues. It was certainly good to be

able to print the maps at home so they could be printed last thing.

A big thanks to Stephan and Alan for coming out early on the Sunday to help get things

set up while Jane and I put out the last of the controls. I had a few stock worries (not about the

stock but how people would cope with them) so Alan kindly helped guide people while Stephan

got people sorted at the start. I also had some major electric fence issues for which I apologise. I

had arranged for one farmer to turn them all off, but it seems they were being powered by the

neighbouring farm as well and so the fence required physically disconnecting, once I had found

the offending power feed.

This is probably an example of how not to plan an event, but in the end the day turned out

well and I hope those that didn‘t get too many shocks from the fence enjoyed it. It was nice to see

all the new faces learning about orienteering as well as the old getting ready for nationals.

Thanks to all those that helped on the day or during my preparation that I haven‘t men-

tioned. i.e. David for the maps, Dianne Keip for manning the caravan, Pamela the computer stuff

and Geoff and Derek for their coaching advice. Another thanks to Derek also for collecting the

forest controls – it‘s beautiful in there, but I wasn‘t looking forward to going out to get them.

SS7—Frimley Park I had the pleasure of setting a course at Frimley Park on the 5th of March. Callum being

the vetter and I the setter, we set out a week early to go check out the course I had put together.

We had some mapping issues due to a recent installment of classes at the Hastings Girls and

some changes in the gardens at Frimley. But other than those two issues we didn‘t have much

mapping to do. When we went into Lindisfarne we had a problem with a teacher. He walks

over to Callum and me and goes, ―Do you have permission to be here?‖

―Yeah, we do.‖

―Well you‘re leaving,‖ he says. I didn‘t understand him because I thought he was asking

the question but he was actually telling us to leave. So after I said, ―Yeah we are leaving when

we are done,‖ he got quite angry. After that we left.

On the day we had some problems with getting the caravan into the park so we just de-

cided to leave it on the roadside. I went out set up all the controls and we were ready to go. Just

as I open the map of course it starts to rain. But all in all it went well and many people said it

was a good challenging course. Can‘t wait till next year‘s!

7 SS8—Ahuriri North

One of my projects for the summer holidays was to produce a map of the Ahuriri area,

and I was glad when it came into use for the 8th summer series race. Because the area of map-

ping that I was up to was still relatively small (the map filled an A4 page at 1:2000) it would

mean both short courses and lots of controls.

My initial set of courses went by the traditional summer series pattern, of three loops,

but when even Dad ran it in 10 minutes I knew it was too short. To combat this, I added a few

more controls, and a few more pivots. This added diversity and a more technical aspect to the

course, with which I hoped to trick a few more people into losing time. This set of courses,

while still only 2.0km long, had Dad running times that were slightly longer than ten minutes,

which meant the courses were ready.

Checking control sites, and obtaining landowner permission was the hardest part. Un-

fortunately, one hotel wouldn't allow us access to their car park, which resulted in a total re-

vamp of the far eastern loop. A sea of purple stripe was added, resulting in more route choice

to make up for that lost in the initial loop. Another final check and the maps were off to Dave

for print.

The day of the event was the same as the East Coast athletics champs, which meant that

by the time it came to put out controls my legs had gone. Luckily we had the ute, so we

chucked all the saw horses in the back and drove as much as we could. A small hitch with the

computer was quickly resolved and the masses were underway. It was amazing to see 247 peo-

ple turn up to run the course, and I hope that these people continue orienteering by coming to

our OY and club events throughout the year.

The only negative from the event was the multitude of competitors who should likely

have been disqualified, by crossing out of bounds or impassable objects. I myself witnessed

competitors, both newbies and those more experienced, crossing olive green, impassible fences

and walls, and purple stripe, and those competitors all know who they are… I hope the all feel

extremely guilty.

My thanks go out to many. Thanks to Dad for vetting and test running my courses, and

helping out with the event. Thank you to Phillip and Jane for helping out at the event, and for

set up and pack out in the dark! Thank you to Pam for doing all the computer and entry sys-

tems. Thank you to Dave for sorting all the printing. Thank you also to Derek, who stayed be-

hind in the dark to help pack up, using up your car battery with your lights on!

I have added significantly to the Ahuriri area south of what was on the map, and look

forward to holding another event there in the future. It should be as good, if not better terrain,

course setting and mapping, so it will be one not to miss! Keep a lookout on the club website

(probably next year) for the event on this new map! Devon Beckman

11 SS Final — Woodford

House It was always going to be a challenge setting the summer series final at Woodford - a

multi-loops course on a tiny map that 200-odd people could run before it got dark. Using the

map well and creating some interesting route choice through the buildings, while keeping the

loops clear and easy to read was the key, so hopefully everyone enjoyed what David Fisher

(vetter) and I came up with. Woodford is an idyllic setting for a sprint race with its complex

brick buildings, pool area, and bank of well grown trees, and the weather on the day followed

suit. The leaders all had decent winning margin, so well done to Vida, Devon, Susan, Bayley,

Kim and Hugh, as well as the top white course kids - I'm sure some of you are ready to move

up to the loops courses next year! Tessa

Club Event: Sleeping Giant

The ―Phantom of the Peak‖

On what turned out to be a stormy night on Te Mata Peak on Saturday night, a party was

raging at the new Peak House Cafe. There was a lovely young lady in her high heels and dinner

dress making her way down to the car park at 10:00 pm only to be met by this weird darkly

clad man with a light on his head carrying odd looking - spear like objects in his hand. As she

approached the car her heart picked up a couple of beats and the click of her heels on the tar-

mac - quickened. She fumbled for her keys... opened the door and slammed it shut. In her haste

to get away she hadn‘t noticed her dress was half caught in the door. A thought passed through

the Phantom‘s mind, should he rush over and tell her about her dress? Fortunately he thought

better of that dumb idea and left the poor girl to speed off in her car, with much relief no doubt.

In the lower car park an hour later a car full of youngsters arrived to drink and watch the

lights of Hastings through the fog and rain, when a couple of the girls in the back seat noticed

through their back window this scary looking bloke, wearing a powerful headlight, was taking

spear like objects out of his truck. After multiple anxious looks and obviously some instruc-

tions to their protective male companions, the biggest fella, after taking a couple of extra

swigs, must have decided it was time to ‗man up‘ and face the beast. So he climbed out of the

car, with bottle in hand (for comfort) and swaggered across the car park. Meanwhile his mate,

for fear of facing any cowardice looks from the sheilas, must have decided to come too. The

Phantom, having seen how all this was playing out, decided to make their approach a bit easier

by switching off his powerful head light (which by this stage was blinding them) and started to

make easy conversation. After discovering what the Phantom was up to they started to laugh

and went on to offer him a beer.

This story started with Karen Beckman volunteering me for my first Course Setting

event. Thanks Karen. I will make sure I include the Beckmans in my next track building

Working Bee in the Mountain Bike Park.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Sleeping Giant event on the Peak. The weather turned in

our favour after a horrid Saturday night. As a ‖first timer‖ it‘s a bit daunting setting your first

event but I have to say the club have done a great job with the resource information that‘s

available on the website and I was fortunate to have a wise old fella to vet what I was doing.

Devon and Pamela both gave me some expert tips on using the Condes software. Thanks guys.

My floundering around the Peak in the middle of the night was my own mistake. Geoff

had suggested that I not put out the checkpoints on the Public Trails until early the next morn-

ing. But I had decided that I would put all the checkpoints out Saturday evening. But my Satur-

day didn‘t go to plan which meant I wasn‘t on the Peak until about 7:30 pm. So two good les-

sons learnt, don‘t let Karen assign you an event in a public space and secondly get everything

done in the daylight.

Thanks a lot Geoff for all your kind help and advice and many thanks Pamela and Jane

for helping run things on the day. Kevin McCarthy

17 Club Event: Guthrie

Smith Bees and Frogs. It sounds like the title of something by Aristophenes but it‘s actually

what you missed at Guthrie Smith. ―How did I miss them?‖ you ask yourself; at least inside my

head you ask – in real life you‘ve probably flicked onto the next page. However, because I

always listen to the voices in my head, I will tell you, but only in due course.

Instead, let me tell you a story of gratification delayed, almost beyond gratifying. My

opinion about site visits is the same as my opinion about voting: do it early and do it often. Yet

ofttimes, life conspires and so it proved. While there were many occasions when Roger and I

could visit the arboretum to assess the terrain, there were no occasions when we could do so

together... until two weeks before the event. Two meagre weeks! I hoped there were no great

changes needed.

There were great changes needed.

A non-standard map of Guthrie Smith existed in the mid-1980s and was used by the

club from 1989. The club then produced its own map in proper orienteering colours/symbols in

2000. This was in turn replaced by an update in 2002 rescaled to 1:7500. As near as I can tell,

this map was last used in 2006. (I started orienteering in 2007!) When Rita Homes revised the

map in January 2012, she discovered that the 2002 version was actually 1:5000 scale.

Rita's 2012 map was the basis for this event. For whatever reason, the club has not yet

used Rita's map and the Guthrie Smith Outdoor Education Centre have undertaken an extensive

re-planting programme, causing a few significant changes in the map. Fences had been torn

down and put up; new tracks had been cleared and old ones overgrown; vegetation had gone

mental: new plantings, lush growth.

A lake was bigger. I‘m not kidding – a lake had either been mismapped too small or

enlarged by bulldozer but it was definitely bigger than on the map and Mister Google‘s satellite

confirmed this. However digital David is remarkably good at updating maps, even when your

(by which I mean my) instructions are a shade ambiguous (by which I mean incomprehensi-

ble.) So I had a workable map available in the time it took me to have my dinner.

However, there was another issue which was beyond the power of pixels to correct. I

had chosen a blank paddock as a nice place to put my start and finish. Sadly, it suffered from

quasi-biblical infestations of cute animals. The first plague was frogs: tiny little green guys,

each not much longer than my thumb from tip to first knuckle. They bounced around us as

Roger and I lumbered through the long grass. I‘m not sure what the impact of maybe a hundred

orienteers might have been on them but we never found out.

That‘s because the second infestation was bees. I like bees. They make honey and I like

honey. But not everyone agrees with bees. Roger and I were both fine with having everyone

squeeze past the bees on the way to the start. And we were prepared to swing the finish away

to the south to please the bees. But David was having no such frivolity. The mere thought of

bees gave him an attack of the crazies. He claimed that he flees from bees because they can

cause him to seize. So I moved the start and finish and the only influence the bees had on the

course was to force me into ever more improbable rhymes.

There were, of course, many consequences of moving to Plan B. (I‘m doing puns now

for a start.) The most obvious was the impact on the first leg of every course. Our original start

area had quite short first legs in all sorts of different directions and a triangle out of sight round

Page 19: Compass Pointshborienteering.com/club/uploads/cpoints/2014_04.pdf · 2014-05-12 · 10 Chris Wells 40:10 11 Arran Wells 40:14 12 Ben Stephenson 44:14 13 Danielle Stephenson 44:55

the corner of a hill. The new start had longer first legs straight up the valley. That‘s just the

way it was going to be. (Last one, I promise.) I had to completely re-draw the white and yellow

courses: white runners had to climb two hills instead of one and the yellow course was going in

the completely opposite direction. Conversely, orange was barely affected and the reposition-

ing of control 1 meant that maroon‘s leg 2 was a much better route choice leg. And the walk to

the start was 400 metres shorter and involved less playing in traffic.

The site visit revealed other pluses and minuses too. The first plus was the potential for

control 104 (maroon 3) which wasn‘t possible until we saw that there were unmapped mapable

features under the trees that we could use. This made for a genuine route choice leg. Roger

identified the potential of control 128 (pink 4, maroon 8) which pushed the reds back into the

forest. We also decided that the control we had down near the newly enlarged lake was a bit of

a bingo, due to the hidden detail and the long grass. However by simply removing it, we made

the maroon long leg 5 much better: 120 metres longer and changing the better decision of

whether to go wide to the south early and hit the track or stay close to the line and finish with a

climb. I‘m dead keen to know who took which route and what their splits were.

The biggest minus was that my fears about angles of incline were born out, particularly

on the pink course. I had some fun legs but I was worried that the contours were very close

together on a 1:5k map. How reasonable/safe was it to expect competitors to climb out of that

horseshoe earth bank? Not even slightly. The problem was by making the pink course physi-

cally less challenging I also had to make it navigationally less challenging. It was a bit of a

shame but that‘s the way it had to bee. (Ok, now I‘m definitely done.)

The other minus was that, once again, I treated my partner to the hilarious embarrass-

ment of ways that I can inelegantly climb a fence. (My previous vetter compared it to watching

a car crash in slow motion: you want to look away but it‘s just not possible.) Roger watched

aghast as I wobbled at a corner post then plunged over, my thigh twisting two strands of barbed

wire into a makeshift gintrap. As the bruising came up, I planned a return visit. With bolt cut-

ters.

Then, on the Wednesday before the event, the committee got in touch: ―Road crossing?

Are you sure? Isn‘t that dangerous?‖

It was, of course, too late to move the event centre and any alternative venue on the

right side of the road would have involved a very long trek (down the road no doubt) to the

start. I was confident that our competitors could cross the road safely and several stalwarts vol-

unteered to act as crossing marshals at various times. Roger painted a few signs and we had

cunningly scouted a few orange cones left close to the venue that we could pick up and stick on

the road.

As we set out the controls it was Roger‘s turn to make an inelegant mistake. Having put

out his collection, he set off to check the placing of mine. And he couldn‘t find one. ―Where‘s

control 141?‖ he muttered darkly. Round and round he went, into and out of re-entrants, past

new plantings and old slips. Finally he realised, that big blue line through control 141 was be-

cause it‘s a ghost control on the fictional ―run David through the beehives‖ course. We never

took it out and we never put it out.

Sunday dawns and Roger and I headed out through the rather Brontesque ground mist.

As we approach the parking, we see a sign up: Temporary Speed Limit – 30 kph. We pull into

the event centre and there are trucks and guys in high-vis vests all over the place. Five minutes

later we‘re talking to Tony of Traffic Management Hawke‘s Bay…

―Yep,‖ says Tony, ―we‘re doing some overtime so we‘ll be working here all day. Do

you want us to set up some safety cones? How about I put one of the guys onto helping you at

the crossing point? Do you want stop/go signs?‖ Traffic safety became the least of my worries.

Page 20: Compass Pointshborienteering.com/club/uploads/cpoints/2014_04.pdf · 2014-05-12 · 10 Chris Wells 40:10 11 Arran Wells 40:14 12 Ben Stephenson 44:14 13 Danielle Stephenson 44:55

19 I then spent the first part of the event at the start, watching the yellow maps go down

way too fast. In the end we had 55 runners despite having only 40 maps, so my thanks to those

who allowed their map to be recycled. (We also had 31 do the pink course and we only had 30

of those. So the person who ran pink despite my urging her to run maroon… Though to be fair,

you can‘t argue with her result. Well done, Harriet. My apologies to the two people whom I did

convince to do the maroon. I hope you enjoy it. FWIW, I think that your worst controls were

the ones shared with the pink course.)

Later in the day (when the start was no longer in shade) I left Roger baking in the sun so

I could stroll around the course and see what sorts of route choices people were making. There

was some fascinating action up the top of the hill and the maroon long leg route of choice was

to stay close to the line and climb late. Geoff argued that you had better visibility approaching

the control and it was possible to angle up the face of the hill so you weren‘t climbing too hard.

I took some lovely photos of water reflecting off the lake – I think sun stroke had started to

become an issue for me. Then we all packed up and went home.

Thanks to those who helped. There are all the usual suspects (David, Pamela, Phillip,

Damian) who unpacked and repacked the caravan and ensured that the computer was comput-

ing and the printer printing and the sausage sizzle sizzling. Thanks Martin and Fraser and Matt

for taking your money and picking up controls and Faye, Kristina, Liffey and Phillip who stood

beside the road to monitor crossing. Thanks especially to Roger, for sage advice, hot tea and

friendly banter; I had a great time working with you. Lastly thanks to the 160 competitors who

(mostly) found their way around the course. Hugh

OY1: Maraetotara As my family knows too well, I am more of a last minute person when it comes to

deadlines so Murray Harty did an amazing job at keeping me well on schedule. A quick look at

my emails reveals it took nearly a month for me to actually give in and take a look at the map,

but two quick meetings and a run around the farm later, the courses were pretty much finalised

with two weeks to go.

Thank you all for turning up in some large numbers in spite of the cold weather! I had

been cunning enough to place the start tent on probably the most exposed hillside on the map,

so it was no trouble hurrying the long line of people through the start. The day got a bit too

exciting at one point when Derek invited a very VERY mad cow up the track and sent the 30 or

so people in the start tent scrambling down the hill. Unfortunately a tree blocked the way on

Maraetotara Road in the early afternoon and a few families were caught out.

It was the greatest experience being able to set on Hawke‘s Bay‘s map of maps, and a

great challenge living up to the standards of all the big events that have found their place there

over the years. If you have seen the red long map you will get what I mean when I say ―I tried

to make it tight and loopy.‖ But judging by the sheer lack of mispunches on the harder courses

the amount of tightly packed controls out there wasn‘t too much of a problem. I think the win-

ning times were all around about where we wanted them, and the flatness of the course meant

many grades were very competitive for the top placings. A special congrats to Devon Beckman

for smashing the 7.5 km course in just 51 minutes.

Due to a recent increase in demand, I had made two yellow courses – in theory one for

girls and one for boys. But if you were really observant you might have noticed the day‘s most

extraordinary result: Angus Macmillan taking out Yellow Women‘s course. In fact several of

the boys must have been so eager to run they somehow slipped through me and picked up the

girls‘ map. I believe their OY points are to be amended.

For all the things that could have turned horribly wrong, the event had got to be the

smoothest I had ever had a part in, and the credit definitely goes to Murray for making my job

so easy. Thanks for all the great positive feedback on all the courses, and thank you for all

those who helped out on the day. Callum Herries

OY2: Tangoio After having two setters pull out on her, Mum asked me to fill in and set the Tangoio

OY. Speaking to Duncan, he would vet, and we were both keen to put both the map and the

competitors through their paces. Tangoio is the notorious map of Hawke‘s Bay, feared both

throughout the club and around the nation. The combination of deathly hill climbs, contours

that are far too close together, and an ever growing sea of green that clings to the map like a

deadly plague, make setting courses both difficult and painful at the same time, all in the quest

of producing the best of the best course wise.

Duncan and I had both trained together in parts of the forest, and knew which parts were

to be avoided, and which were slightly more accommodating to the orienteer. We settled on the

middle eastern part, which we knew had some nice forest to the north and north west. A quick

scout from Duncan had a good finish chute (one of the most crucial parts to any event) and

event centre organised, and all we needed was a start. Our initial impression was that if we

were to place it, say, 3 mins walk from the event centre, the climb would be horrendous on the

courses, and our red long would have to be something like 2.8km to befit the winning time. So

our solution to this was to place the start in the north western corner of the map, in fact the

furthest part of the eventual printed map from the finish. This meant it was close to the good

parts of the course, set up a good route choice leg, and had a significant decrease in climb in

the courses. Yes, this did mean a half hour walk to the start, up a rather steep hill, but we fig-

ured that‘s how far you would run as a warm up anyway…

After the courses were set, I was out to check them out. I ran the red long, starting at

about 4:30pm, and an hour and a half later ran down the finish chute. It was a reasonably cold

and wet day, with a significant mist rolling through the forest, and every half hour the vineyard

next door would have its bird scarer go off, giving the slight sense that I was in The Hunger

Games. Despite these feelings, the length of the course was still too long, and some of the con-

trols were significantly infected by the plague previously mentioned. A reshuffle occurred,

however the next opportunity to check control sites would be scarce, with Duncan being away

for a week, and then Nationals on Easter weekend, a week before the event was set to take

place.

The day after nationals was planned for Duncan and me to go and check controls. While

you may be thinking, “That is a bit harsh,” which it was considering Duncan especially had run

over 30km of full speed orienteering in the weekend, Duncan didn't finish work until 5, which

meant he couldn't get out to the forest until 5:30pm, which meant we would be checking con-

trols in the dark. Turning up to the forest with the car headlights already on meant that it would

a dark experience, but luckily Duncan’s headlight was far better than mine and we could see

more than just a metre or so in front of ourselves. Control site checking went quite well, con-

sidering the circumstances, and we were through about two thirds of the sites when the heavens

opened. It came out of nowhere, and suddenly a river was flowing down every track. We were

drenched to the bone, freezing cold and pushing hard to just get out of the forest. Suddenly

everything was lit up for a second, before returning to darkness, while simultaneously a deaf-

ening crack echoed around the forest. Now, while lightening may be not that scary when it is

far away, when it lights up everything you see, and the sound comes immediately with it, and

you know it is very close to your location, you tend to feel slightly anxious. With only a few

more controls to check we powered on, moving at rapid speed through the forest, stumbling

Page 28: Compass Pointshborienteering.com/club/uploads/cpoints/2014_04.pdf · 2014-05-12 · 10 Chris Wells 40:10 11 Arran Wells 40:14 12 Ben Stephenson 44:14 13 Danielle Stephenson 44:55

27 every so often in the darkness. Only 300m from the cars, it struck again, this time louder and

brighter. It was so close in fact, that both Duncan and I felt the shock, as if we had just been

shocked by a weak electric fence. The rain was still torrential, Duncan’s headlight would no

longer plough ahead through the forest, and we were just anticipating the strike that would fry

us. Luckily we made it to the cars, took off our sodden outer layers and jumped in the car. Nei-

ther of us had dry clothes or a towel, and both of us drove home sodden with the heater on full

blast. The positive from this experience was that the courses were ready, aside from a few map

tweaks.

The day before the event we put out controls, all of which were fine, and set about

marking the route to the start. I knew that the track we were set to use had a tree down across

it, however our route turned out to detour quite far from the proverbial beaten track. Luckily

Duncan brought along his old faithful machete, and we set about cutting the most intrepid route

to the start we could concoct. I hope everyone enjoyed walking that route as much as we did

making it. The motto of the event for Duncan and I was “If they can’t get to the start, then they

don’t deserve to run our courses”. I hope everyone appreciated the thought that went into this

route, even if that appreciation was shown in abuse and sweat. Another route to cut with the

machete was a tapped route for the white, which went straight through a large plague infected

area. This resulted in many cuts and blood, but all in order of making the best event.

Finally the day of the event dawned fine, albeit cold at 8 in the morning in the shade.

Cows had destroyed our finish chute set up the previous day, but a few pieces of daggy old

tape quickly fixed that. While we really looked forward to carrying the start clock and equip-

ment up our expertly cut route to the start, we both decided it would be best if we drove the

quad up, much to the disgust of those we passed who were beginning the long jaunt to the start.

The day ran smoothly, no hiccups, and I know everyone was really appreciative of the walk to

the start once they realised that it took the climb from being well over 700m to around 300m.

I was glad to see Callum make many mistakes in the red long, although I think running

behind him caused this. It was good to see Derek win Red Medium, defeating his Napier Boys‘

and Girls‘ High protégés, although I was disappointed that he only came back with a small cut

on his leg, rather than the usual blood loss he incurs at Tangoio. Overall it was great to see the

large turnout, especially for a holiday event.

Thanks must go to many people. Firstly, Duncan was a great vetter, with great ideas

(the start was his…) great advice and being there all day to set up, pack up and run the event.

Also thanks to Dad for being there early to help set up, and late to pack out, as well as Derek

who stayed behind to pack up. Thanks to Phillip, for always being there early to set up, doing

the radio work and making the event a whole lot better. He must be especially acknowledged

as one of those who made the trip up to the start twice, along with Hugh, who took up a late

runner. Thanks to Pam for doing all the entry and sport ident jazz. Thanks to Dave for organis-

ing the printing. Finally thanks to the Sweetapple’s for running the caravan smoothly and cook-

ing great sausages.

I hope everyone is looking forward to the next Beckman/Morrison event, OY 4 at Wai-

poapoa on July 6. I promise that this event will be bigger, better, and the walk to the start will

be as good if not better (if that is even possible). Duncan and I will produce fantastic courses,

which challenge the competitor in all aspects of orienteering, the physical, technical and men-

tal. It will take a true orienteer to triumph at this event, which will not only be great for the

competitor themselves, but as a spectator you too will be able to enjoy the best of what orien-

teering has to offer. Looking at the map already, Duncan and I have brainstormed ideas that

will lift this event above the rest. The hype will not stop here, however, and neither will the

events. Look out in the future for events and promotion of Beckman/Morrison events. They

will be ones not to miss. Devon B

31 NZOC 2014: Manawatu

It sounds like an oxymoron, but the Nationals were held in lovely, autumnal Manawatu

sunshine. We left the dreary Hawke‘s Bay drizzle and found clement weather through the

gorge. I‘m assuming that‘s why my lotto tickets weren‘t winners – lightning can‘t strike twice.

The first day was the sprint, held at RNZAF Ohakea. While none of the controls were

inside a hanger, the courses still had their twists and turns. However, many HBOC members

were up to the challenge with four gold medals secured: Bailey M14, Jenna W14, Georgia

W18 and Devon M20. It was also the site of our only medal in the elite class, Amber getting 3rd

in W21E.

The middle race was held on the Horowhenua coast (still sunny) at the venue for last

year‘s World Cup middle – Manga Pirau. The sand dunes in particular were very hard to read

and the courses weaved in and out of the adjacent pine forest, constantly changing your per-

spective of the course. However, another five 1st place finishes were scored, by Jenna W14A,

Hamish M50A, Derek M60A, Erica W40AS and Isabella W14B. HBOC actually placed three

on the podium in W60, because David and Roger dead-heated for 3rd.

Easter Sunday began with the long race on Santoft Forest‘s Fusilier map. It‘s flat and

fast but also vague and the secret to winning is as much about minimising errors as it is about

punching the afterburners. It was a good venue for the Herries family, who provided both our

victors: Callum in M20A and Catherine in W21AS. In the evening were the night races, char-

acterised by the only soggy shoes of the weekend. However three more HBOC runners topped

their class: Will M12, Jenna W14 and Callum M20.

The relays the next day were not a great success, with no HBOC team making the po-

dium, though the trio of Devon, Vida and Callum were 4th in the long.

33 March Member of the Month: Matt Radford

How long have you been involved in orienteering?

I started when I was about 10 years old so about 15 years. Although, I have only just started up

again this year after moving to Hawke‘s Bays after a 3-4 year break

How did you get involved with orienteering?

I got into through the Thayer family in Dunedin as I was best friends with their son Brendan. I

was like their 4th kid and would go along to all

the orienteering events with them.

What do you remember about your first event?

I can't really remember my first event. My earliest

memory is on a yellow course and getting lost

trying to take a short cut. I missed the track junc-

tion and ended up going very much off course and

ended up going off the map.

What courses do you usually run?

Long red

What do you enjoy about orienteering?

I enjoy most the combination of mental and physi-

cal components. Running can be quite tedious by

itself, but with orienteering it keeps your mind

occupied at the same time. It's really satisfying

when everything lines up between the map and

the ground and you nail a tough control. It's also

a great way of getting to see the outdoors and go

to areas you never would have gone otherwise

If we met you during the week, what would you

be doing?

During the week I would be at Hawke‘s Bay hos-

pital where I am in my final year of medical

school. I have spent the last 2 years in Wellington

but moved up here in November for my final year.

I rotate around different departments in the hospi-

tal every 4-6 weeks. Currently I am in ED. I am

hoping to get a job here next year and stay in the

bay.

If your race was going to be a movie, what

would be the music?

I am not really sure how to answer this question. I

guess ideally it would be a calm song but with a

quick tempo. However, in reality for me it proba-

bly would be a lot more erratic and a bit over the

place at times.

April Members of the Month: Wolland Family

How long have you been involved in orienteering? Since 2009

How did you get involved with orienteering? Through HNI, Louise Goodwin sparked an

interest with Amy , our daughter and it was something that we had wanted to try since we had

heard Peter Snell competed did it.

What do you remember about your first event? Amy did interhouse at HNI and found it

enjoyable. The rest of us got lost in Tongoio forest, not enough fences and too many paths.

What courses do you usually run? Whites to Reds

What do you enjoy about orienteering? The challenge, seeing different parts of Hawke‘s

Bay that you don‘t normally get to see and it is not only about running it evens the playing

field in the competition for family bragging rights.

If we met you during the week, what would you be doing? Work and school—nothing in-

teresting

If your race was going to be a movie, what would be the music? The movie would be far

too long. At the after party, kid rock would be one of the features.
