    COMPARISON OF TWO FILIPINO EPICS

    Biag ni Lam-ang Elements ofan Epic

    Indarapatra at Sulayman

    Lam- ang was an extraordinary being. He started to speak at an incredibly young age and

    was the one to choose his own name.

    His adventure began when his father, Don Juan,went to a battle but never came back.

    At the age of barely nine months he went to searchfor his father in the highlands where his father was

    said to go.

    Aware that her child was a blessed, extraordinarycreature, Namongan, his mother, allowed him to go. Lam-ang then went off to search for his father,

    leaving his grieving mother behind.

    When Lam-ang reached the place, he was enragedupon seeing his father's head on top of a bamboopole that was stuck in the ground which was a scene

    that he had dreamed before reaching the place.

    Lam-ang then demanded to know the reason whythat had happened to his father, but did not receive

    an answer. Instead he was demanded by the chieftain of the

    village to go or else he would receive the same fate

    like his father.

    Instead of running, Lam-ang bravely fought with thechieftain and its tribesmen. Lam-ang won the fightwith less effort, serving as his revenge for his

    father.

    Plot

    The epic heroes in the story were Indarapatraand Sulayma. Indarapatra was a king and

    Sulayman was his brother. Indarapatra andSulayman were favored and protected by

    God.

    Based on the epic, Mindanao before is amountainous place and it is also a monstrousplace for there are 4 monsters living in the 4

    highest mountains there. First is the monsterwith lots of legs, Kurita.

    Second is Tarabusaw a very creepy giant,third is Pa a very huge bird that almost covers

    Mt. Apo when it flies over the mountain.

    Lastly and the most difficult monster to killbecause of its 7 heads that can make it viewall of the directions at the same time, is

    Balbal. Fortunately they both killed those

    monsters and suddenly a fairy appeared and

    thanked them. And Indarapatra fell in love with the fairy and

    they lived happily ever after.

    has strong power to protect his own self to theenemies (Igorots)

    at the age of 9 months old he decided to go also inhighlands to come with his father. Deed

    Accomplish feats no real human could.Indarapatra and Sulayman could fly and havestrength that they killed the four monsters.

    They restored the peace and safety in the land

    of Mindanao.

    Albuan- somewhere in the Valley of Naguilan Riverin La Union where Lam-ang and his parents lived.

    Setting The story happened in Mindanao.

    Involves supernatural animals; pets that can talk andperform unnatural dees Forces

    The story involves the existing monsters inthe land. Sulayman cheated death.

    The narrator sees and knows all and presents allperspectives.
