The Experiment
1. Creating the samples of marble, red brick and beige brick: thesamples are cut and cored, thenlabeled.
3. Artificially weathering: thesamples are placed into holderscreated for the weather exposurechamber.
2. Painting the sampleswith red and black stars
4. Applying removal methods
Graffiti Removal Methods
Many removers do not completely remove the
graffiti, and leave ghostmarks on the buildings.
Different removers workbetter for different
materials.
The above image is evidence of people trying toremove graffiti
Purpose:The purpose of this study is to identify appropriate methods toremove graffiti from different types of masonry.
Chemical Solvent: achemical based paint stripper
Laser: aninstrument usingradiation to amplifylight.
Poultice: a soft, dampclay, paper, or woodmass applied to the
surface.
Abrasive: PressureWasher
Quick removal willdiscourage taggers from
adding more graffiti.

The purpose of this study is to removegraffiti from historic masonry substrates
without damaging the stone.
Quick removal will discouragetaggers from adding more graffiti.
