Comparing self report and teacher assessment of reading motivation
Utrecht University of Applied Sciences
1. Developing reliable instruments to measure, by self report and teacher assessment, kindergarten and primary school pupils’ motivation for reading.2. Research on the relationship between self report and teacher assessment about pupils’ motivation for reading
Instruments for measuring reading motivation are based onseparate and relatively well-established constructs in reading motivation: Competence beliefs and goal orientation. The concept of goal orientation consists of: task orientation, social dependence orientation and ego defensive orientation(Lepola et al., 2005; Nurmi & Aunola, 2005).
Theory
Aims
Composing a large item pool
5 reading experts assigned 47 items into 4 categories :-competence beliefs-task orientation-social dependence orientation-ego defensive orientation
The 47-item version of the scale was field-tested on reliabilityand validity in May 2009 in 16 schools, by 52 teachers and 861 children (4-12 years)
