Sunday we commemorated the killing of four young girls in an affluent African-American neighborhood fifty years ago in Birmingham, Alabama. They were attending Sunday services at the 16th Street Baptist Church when the dynamite bomb planted by the KKK exploded. The tragedy helped to mobilize support for the civi l r ights movement. The FBI identified four suspects in the bombing, but for an unknown reason blocked prosecution of the case. Years later, the suspects were finally tried and convicted beginning in 1977.

We are accustomed to hearing of bombings and terror strikes in other countries, but fifty years ago home-grown terrorists struck in the American south. Repeated calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice went unanswered for more than a decade. It was later revealed that the FBI had information concerning the identity of the bombers by 1965 and did nothing.

Compare this piece of history with the ‘swift action’ that was seen after the recent Boston City Marathon bombing. What’s the difference? Some say: “Justice delayed is Justice denied.” What do you think? How can we insure that everyone is treated the same under the law?

Middle Ages Sister There was a nun in the middle ages who claimed she had seen a vision of Christ. The bishop asked, “Sister, did you talk to Him?” And she said, “Yes, I did.” He continued, “If you have another vision, sister, ask Christ this question: “What was the bishop’s great sin before he became bishop?” He knew that only God and his confessor would know the answer to that. About three months later, the nun made an appointment to see the bishop. When she came in, he said, “Did you see our Lord again?” “Yes,” she replied. “Did you ask Him the question about my sin?” “Yes, I did.” “And what did He say?” She smiled and answered, “The Lord said, ‘ I don’t remember anymore.”

Who to Please??

A father and his son took a donkey to market. The man sat on the beast and the boy walked. People along the

way said, “What a terrible thing: a big strong fellow sitting on the donkey’s back while the youngster has to walk.” So the father dismounted and the son took his place. Soon onlookers remarked: How terrible: the old man

walking and the little boy sitting.”

At that, they both got on the donkey’s back--only to heart others say, “How cruel; two people sitting on one little

donkey.”

Off they got. But other bystanders commented, “How crazy: the donkey has nothing on its back and two

people are walking.”

Finally, they both carried the donkey and they never made it to market.

LOVE OFNEIGHBOR

An ancient rabbi asked students how they could tell when night had ended and day was on its way back. “Could it be when you see a man or an animal in the

distance and can tell whether it is a sheep or a dog?”

“No,” answered the rabbi.“Could it be when you look at a tree in the distance and can tell whether it is a fig tree or a peach tree?”

“No.” “Well, then,” the students demanded, “when is it?”

“It is when you look on the face of any man or woman and see that she or he is your brother or

sister. Because if you cannot do that, then no matter what time it is, it is still night.”

Believe it or not, Horatio Lord Nelson, England’s famous naval hero, suffered from seasickness throughout his entire life. Needless to say, the man who destroyed Napoleon’s fleet did not let it interfere with his career and duties. He not only learned to live with his personal weakness, he conquered it.

LORD NELSON, the conqueror !?!LORD NELSON, the conqueror !?!
