Comparative Study of Different Mobile Operating
System
WHAT IS OS? OS is an interface between the user & computer
hardware Computer must have an OS to run other programs &
application. OS performs basic tasks:
1. recognizing input2. sending output3. keeping track of files and directories4. controlling peripheral devices
WHAT IS MOBILE OS?
It is an OS for smartphones, tablets, PDAs, or other mobile devices.
It combine features of a PC OS with other features useful for mobile or handheld use.
features including: a touchscreen, Cellular, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS
mobile navigation, Camera, video camera, etc…
HISTORY 1979–1992 Mobile phones use embedded systems to
control operation. 1994 The first smartphone, the IBM Simon, has a
touchscreen, email & PDA features. 1996 Palm Pilot 1000 PDA is introduced with the Palm OS. 1996 First Windows CE Handheld PC devices are
introduced. 1999 Nokia S40 OS is officially introduced along with the
Nokia 7110 2000 Symbian becomes the first modern mobile OS on a
smartphone with the launch of the Ericsson R380.
TYPES OF MOBILE OS
Current Software Platform:- iOS Android Blackberry Firefox OS Sailfish OS Tizen Ubuntu Touch OS Windows
Discontinued Software Platform:- Symbian Palm OS WebOS Maemo MeeGo LiMo
ANDROID OS Based on Linux kernel & designed for touchscreen
mobile devices. Developed by Android, Inc., Google & bought in
2005. Open source. Unveiled in 2007. The UI of Android is based on:
direct manipulation using touch inputs likeswiping, tapping, pinching and reverse pinching to manipulate on-screen objects.
ANDROID OS► Android versions have been developed under a
codename & released according to alphabetical order.
Companies that support Android OS: Samsung, Sony, HTC, Huawei, ZTE, LG, Motorola,
Lenovo, Dell, etc…► Logo derived from Atari Game called “Gauntlet: The
Third Encounter”.
WINDOWS OS Developed by Microsoft & is a closed source. On February 15, 2010, Microsoft unveiled its next-
generation mobile OS, Windows Phone. First launched on October 2010. Includes completely new over-hauled UI inspired by
Microsoft's "Metro Design Language“, includes: OneDrive & Office, Xbox Music, Xbox Video, Xbox
Live games & Bing, Facebook & Google accounts.
WINDOWS OS As of 21 January 2015, Microsoft has announced that
the Windows Phone brand will be replaced with Windows 10 Mobile.
It will primarily aim to bring: tighter integration & unification with its PC
counterpart Windows 10 platform for both smartphones & small tablets
under 8” in screen size. Windows Phone devices are made primarily by:
Microsoft Mobile/Nokia, HTC, Samsung.
iOS Developed & distributed by Apple Inc. Released on June 29, 2007. It has been extended to support other Apple devices
such as the iPod Touch, iPad, iPad Mini and second-generation Apple TV, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, iPod Classic.
Unlike Microsoft's Windows Phone & Google's Android, Apple does not license iOS for installation on non-Apple hardware.
iOS The UI of iOS is based on the concept of direct
manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders,
switches & buttons. Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as
swipe, tap, pinch & reverse pinch, all of which have specific definitions within the context of the iOS OS & its multi-touch interface.
SYMBIAN OS Open-source. Computing platform designed for smartphones
which was most preferred by Nokia Mobile Company.
Currently maintained by Accenture. Originally developed by Symbian Ltd.
SYMBIAN OS Used by many major mobile phone
brands like: Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, &
above all by Nokia. It was the most popular smartphone OSon a worldwide average until the end of 2010, when it was overtaken by Android.

CONCLUSION We have seen various mobile OS & their features &
comparison. For developers the OS is an ultimate platform to
develop apps innovatively & publish in market very easily. Not only in mobile phones, the OS is diverging in various fields like Tabs, Smart TVs and Cameras etc.
A mobile OS should be a result of factors like user experience, battery life, cloud readiness, security & openness. A successful mobile OS is a result of a design between software & hardware together.
Now-a-days, android is most popular used mobile OS.
