  • Slide 2
  • How do Comparative Embryology and Biochemistry supports evolution? Objectives: 1.Describe and explain how embryos and DNA provides evidence of evolution. 2.Compare embryos of different organisms. 3.Explain how biochemistry is an evidence of evolution.

  • How do Comparative Embryology and Biochemistry supports evolution? Do now: An athlete breaks her leg in a high jump. Years later, she has a son who walks with a slight limp. Is this an example of evolution? Why or why not? Vocabulary: embryology biochemistry genetic code

  • How do Comparative Embryology and Biochemistry supports evolution? 1.Comparative embryology compare similarities in early development. 2. An embryo is an early pre-birth stage of an organisms development. 3. Vertebrate embryos exhibit homologous structures during certain phases of development suggesting that vertebrates evolved from a shared ancestor.

  • How do Comparative Embryology and Biochemistry supports evolution? Anatomical Evidence for Evolution Developmental similarities reflect descent from a common ancestor

  • How do Comparative Embryology and Biochemistry supports evolution? Biochemistry DNA evidence 1. Another important line of evidence for evolution comes from DNA analysis. 2. Any permanent change in form or function of an organism must be preceded by a change in its DNA. 3. Organisms which have much of their DNA in common must be closely related, i.e. they have split from a common ancestor comparatively recently (in geological terms). 4. For example, humans and chimpanzees have 99% of their DNA in common which suggests a close relationship and relatively recent divergence from a common ancestor.
