The history of SAMP and its brands has always been eventful. Gradually we have grown to become one of the largest gear and screw production equipment suppliers and one of the top wire and cable equipment manu-facturers in the world.

Continuity is very important to us; starting out from a small work shop, our values have always reflected the way in which we run our business. Where we come from

In 1936 Gaetano Maccaferri started out with a small workshop for the production of wire machinery.

He called his company S.A.M.P., which translates from the Italian as "Company for Precision Metalworking". Since it was difficult to find good quality gears on the market at that time, he started manufacturing his own.

During the Second World War SAMP supplied the Italian air-force with preci-sion gears, but the demanding quality requirements forced the Company to produce his own high-precision tools. For the same reason he was later to start developing his own tool grinding machinery and checking instruments,

Sampingranaggi was therefore able to supply both single components and finished speed reducers.

In 1997 SAMP’s wire drawing machinery division took the name of Sampsistemi and, thanks to the acquisition of competing companies,it broadened its programme to includeextrusion equipment for the manufac-ture of finished cables.

In 2006 the divisions Sampingranaggi, Samputensili and Sampsistemi, even maintaining their identities, have merged into a single company: SAMP S.p.A.

With a wide range of quality tools on board by 1949, SAMP decided to establish Samputensili, an ad hoc structure and trademark through which to trade these products, and, in the years that followed, this new company was to grow into a supplierof gear cutting tools at worldwide level.

The second division of SAMP, Sampingranaggi, came into being in 1973, extending the company’s gear production programme to include bevel gear sets and high pre-cision speed reducers. Before long

1936 – S.A.M.P. – Società Anonima Meccanica di Precisione is founded in 1936 as a company of the Maccaferri Industrial Group. Production includes wire drawing machines; looms for weaving metallic meshes; general mechanical parts; and gears.

1947 – The manufacture of shaven and ground cylindrical gears, as well as lapped bevel gears continues to expand in support of growing market demand for wire drawing machinery.

1949 – Samputensili is founded as a spin-off from SAMP, producing quality gear cutting tools. Its first customer is the Italian Army Aviation.

The 50's – The first Samputensili sales office is opened in Germany.

The 60's – SAMP begins building machinery to draw non-ferrous materi-als (copper, aluminium and alloys).

The 70's – Samputensili France and Samputensili do Brasil are founded. Sampingranaggi is created in 1973 as a division of SAMP. The company Mc Draw is founded in Williamsport, MD/USA, later to become SAMP USA.

The 80's – Expansion continues and Samputensili America is founded.

The 90's – More offices are opened: Samputensili Japan, Samputensili Korea and Samputensili China in Beijing. In 1997 SAMP enters into the Extrusion market.

2000 – Sampsistemi opens a service centre in Shanghai.

2002 – Samputensili and Star Cutter Inc., MI/USA join forces to form Star SU LLC in North America, later acquir-ing the Fellows Gear Shaper Cutter Division.

2004 – Sampsistemi starts the machine production in Shanghai.

2006 – Sampsistemi, Sampingranaggi and Samputensili merge to form SAMP S.p.A.

2009 – The new SAMP plant in Bentivoglio/Italy becomes the world-wide technology centre of the group.

2012 – In Shanghai the new Sampsistemi plant and a brand new Sampingranaggi manufacturing unit are inaugurated.

2014 – The joint-venture between Samputensili and Star Cutter is rein-forced. The co-operation is extended to South America through the creation of Star SU do Brasil.

2015 – The partnership between Samputensili and Star Cutter is extended to the Chinese market through the creation of Star SU China.

From visions to work shop technologyThe key to creating a successful, long-term product is continuous objective-oriented research. The heart of SAMP lies in its Research and Development departments.

Large investments in modern equip-ment and well-trained personnel create the capacity to research and develop our very own technology in research facilities located across Italy, the US and China.

Machine Tools

We began producing machine tools some 50 years ago to improve the manufacturing quality of our gear cut-ting tool range. Traditionally experts in the field of hard finishing and chamfering/deburring, today we can offer a comprehensive, state-of-the-art machine tool program-me for roughing and finishing gears, shafts, screws, threads and rotors.

Features like direct drives, linear motors, energy savings concepts, time parallel processes and integrated measuring and dressing units, often pioneering developments, are now part of the standard equipment found on many of our machines. We strive continuously to maximise the benefit of your investment.
