This particular welding is performed using a gun inserted in thetubesheet hole with a rotating head. With special tools is possibleto re-build the seat when is necessary to cut the tube alreadywelded.

For the construction of the Vacuum Vessel,Walter Tosto, with the cooperation of PRO-BEAM, has developed and qualifiedprocedures for the execution of EB welding.EB welding, thanks to the law heat inputduring the activities, allows a better controlof the related deformation.

3D laser scanner shall be used for dimensional check. This controlshall be done in any critical intermediate step of fabrication to keepunder control and in case to allow a remedial action, the actualdimension with the predicted ones.

ITER, from Latin, means “way”. It’s themain international experiment with thepurpose of demonstrate scientific andtechnical feasibility of the “fusion” as thenew source of energy .

The ITER Project

In 2010 the Italian Consortium composed byAnsaldo Nucleare, Mangiarotti Spa, WalterTosto Spa and relevant sub‐supplier partnerswon the tender to provide 7 sectors of the IterVacuum Vessel.

What is the Vacuum Vessel of ITER project ?The vacuum vessel is a hermetically‐sealed steel containerinside the cryostat that houses the fusion reaction andacts as a a first safety nuclear containment barrier. In itsdoughnut‐shaped chamber, or torus, the plasma particlesspiral around continuously without touching the walls.

The ITER vacuum vessel will be twice as large andsixteen times as heavy as any previous tokamak, withan internal diameter of 6 meters. It will measure alittle over 19 meters across by 11 meters high, andweigh in excess of 5,000 tons.
