COMPANY HISTORYAEP history is marked by increas-ing successes, thanks mainly to Customers acceptance and rel-evant investments in technolo-gy. AEP was founded by Gianni Becattini, today Managing Director of R&D, in 1998, acquiring the tick-eting branch from Logitron (today Gilbarco Veeder Root) and smart cards know-how.

Since its establishment, AEP was focused exclusively on automat-ic fare collection systems and im-mediately gained the name of an expert and reliable supplier of on-board equipment and ticket vend-ing machines.

In 2002, Company partnership was extended to new shareholders, who gave a further boost to the activity.

In 2003, the Company moved to the new plant of Signa, near the city of Florence and new products continued to increase our range, and first tenders began to be won, even against important interna-tional brands.

In 2010, AEP decided to carry all the benefits of its products also in the system software area, creat-ing ET, The Easy Ticketing, a very extended software suite that cov-ers all the area of e-Ticketing and more, with immediate acceptance by the market.

With revenue increasing, over the last few years foreign markets have become more relevant, reducing the domestic share to less than 50% in 2012.

1994Logitron installs first Italian e-Ticketing sys-

tems in Italy in the cities of Florence and Prato.

1998 AEP is founded and acquired Logitron’s

former e-Ticketing activities.

2000 First participation in an exhibition in

Bologna. The design of Futura 2 val-idator and RTVM ticket vending ma-chine starts. A tender for 70 TVMs for the city of Trieste is won.

2001The first important project: the Minipay

card, an electronic purse for the cit-ies of Florence and Siena.

2002 The project of Futura 4, the magnetic and

contactless validator, begins.

2003 Futura 4 begins its successful histo-

ry: tenders in the towns of Perugia and Spoleto are won, together with Siemens Italdata. AEP moves to the new plant in Signa.

2004 Carta Agile project, one of the most im-

portant project based on-chip-on paper tickets, is put in operation in the city of Florence. Product line is expanded with new devices and solutions.

2005 TSF wins the import-ant CTP tender in the

city of Naples with complete AEP on board system, capable not only val-idating magnetic and contactless fare documents but also offering shift management, vehicle localiza-tion, communication and more.

2006 AEP multi standard contactless reader,

fully based on in-house design, is a reality. F240 validator joins the prod-uct line.

2007 New products are presented, like CDB-

5 PLUS on board computer/driv-er console. More tenders are won. Number of customers reaches lev-el 60. More than 3,000 Futura 4/MX validators are sold in Turkey under Olivetti brand.

2008 OEM contract with Parkeon, France. New

validator Futura 4A/MX for magnetic Edmondson tickets and contactless smart cards is introduced. Number of customers continue to increase.

2009 Elsag (Finmeccanica group) wins the ten-

der for the city of Turin with AEP on board system: more than 8,000 units, mostly Futura 3A valida-tors and CDB-5 PLUS computers. Futura 3A passes, the first validator in the world, the Calypso Network Association audit.

2010 Customers exceed the level of 100.

The development of ET – The Easy Ticketing, AEP system software, is initiated. Commercial activities in France are started.

2011 A new team is con-stituted specifically

for system software development. Republic of Malta assigns the pub-lic transportation system to Arriva Group. Thetis, the system integrator, commissions to AEP the complete ticketing system. This opportunity becomes the test bench for ET and the target is attained in full respect of delivery terms. Furthermore, an entire Italian region, Umbria, decides to adopt ET. Also in this case, even with a very narrow time slot for im-plementation, delivery terms are ful-ly respected.

2012 Asseco Poland wins the tender for the

whole Silesian Region with AEP products and system software. AEP share is more than 6 million euros. CDB-6 PLUS, SW16 and F240B are in-troduced. First tenders in France and in other countries are won. Longwy system in France is started up.

PRODUCTION & QUALITY MANAGEMENT

CERTIFICATIONS ANDMEMBERSHIPS

PRODUCTION is entirely performed in Italy and is 100% tested. The project always includes the Accep-

tance Test Procedure (ATP) for each subassembly, used in production stages and in random Out-Of-the-Box (OOB) post production checks.

PRODUCTS fully comply with all applicable European Community Directives and many other international

standards.

QMS, AEP’s Quality Management System is certified according ISO 9001 / UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 by

SGS organization. Furthermore, AEP production sites are accredited by the Ministry of Transport.

AEP QMS impacts on every part of the company; a huge part of it is related to the project, the project

management and the in-house tests of new products, including the certifications and homologation of equip-ment. Devices are thoroughly tested in all possible op-erating conditions and special tests are performed to establish the expected life of each subassembly.

In addition to ISO 9001 certification, AEP’s produc-tion sites are credited by Ministry of Transport. Every piece of equipment has the CE mark; on-board devic-es are furthermore homologated according 2009/19/CE European Community Directive. AEP is member of UITP, Calypso Network Association, Italian National Confederation of Industry, Italian Contactless User Board etc.

Since its establishment in 1998, AEP Ticketing Solutions has started a different approach to automatic fare collection systems, based on the efficiency of internal processes. It has allowed to supply its customers high level solutions at a rea-sonable cost and also it has enabled AEP to sus-tain a continuous growth of its market share, with stable organizational structures, tactically adapt-able to changing technology and user demands.

QUALITY MEASUREMENT AEP gives primary importance to analysis, development and

testing, from the earliest stages of development. This process not only produces internal quality standards but also spreads the culture of quali-ty measurement across the teams, producing the capability of achieving more ambitious goals.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT Opposed to hand-crafted software for individual customers,

AEP’s industrial approach, based on standardized, well tested and highly configurable modules, re-duces the costs and simplifies testing strategies; any user benefits from the evolution of applica-tions and from common bug fixing. In this way, the investments are more focused and their re-turn can be shared by all users.

SCRUM METHODOLOGY AEP extensively uses the SCRUM method to follow up various de-

velopment stages and respect commitments with Customers.

AEP considers its solid technical base as one of the reasons of its success. Most of our Technical Dept. members are graduated engineers and represent excellence in their own area of competence. AEP Technical Dept. designs most parts of the products, down to component level, using last generation EDA pro-grams for schematics, boards, FPGAs and 3D modeling soft-ware for mechanics.Internal laboratories can perform compliance tests for most applicable standards, like:

SYSTEM SOFTWARE

ET, The Easy Ticketing, (briefly “ET”) is a collection of software applications that covers every as-

pect of an automatic fare collection system. ET is the result of huge investments. Transport Companies can now access a powerful, lightweight, easy to use, modular and cost-effective solution to build up an e-Ticketing system using AEP equipment, such as validators, vending machines, on board com-puters and similar, all coming from a single supplier.

APPROACH The traditional approach to software development has often serious limitations: some

applications are designed specifically for each cus-tomer, in an artisan way.ET, on the contrary, is developed with a logic that is very similar to AEP’s equipment and is composed by standardized modules, industrially designed and thus rationalized and well-engineered. Their proven parametric architecture ensures maximum flexibility to meet the specific needs of each Company without any customization, unless really necessary.

ADVANTAGES: Perfect integration: ET is not only the “system side” software but also the firmware

for the devices. They are conceived and designed to-gether and thus perfectly integrated, by teams who know them deeply. Modern architecture: ET project is relatively new and could therefore take advantage of the most modern web-based computer technologies.

Easy to use: ET has been judged by the users one of the most easy to use e-Ticketing system. Its whole de-sign is based on the assumption that most of its users are non-technical people and that their responsibility is to manage transports rather than informatics.Web based: ET is based on a web server architecture and can be used by an indefinite number of worksta-tions with just a browser, like MS Internet Explorer, on any PC, via the company’s local network or Internet. Part of the applications can operate also locally, to ensure the continuity of service in case of a failure, like the unavailability of communication channels.Modular and flexible: ET is characterized by a mod-ular structure that allows acquiring and using only the functions really required, with the possibility to ex-tend the system later on. Each additional module or sub-module is available separately, in order to reduce the initial investment and match the real needs of the company.

OPENNESS All data produced by ET are collected in a central database; thanks to extensive use of

“web services”, ET structurally ensures the possibili-ty for other applications to access these data and to exchange other information, allowing the interoper-ability of different platforms, with all the consequent advantages.

THIRD PARTY INTEGRA-TION

AEP systems are designed to allow the easy integration with third parties appli-cations by extensive use of web services.

ON-BOARD SUBSYSTEM

With AEP products you can compose a variety of on-board systems in the most different manners. A very simple system can be constituted even by a single multifunction unit, such as the cost-effective CDB-5 PLUS which can be used as driver console, validator for contactless documents and UMTS/Wi-Fi communication unit. It can manage the service (shifts, trips...), tell the GPS position, evaluate delays and enable the driver to sell tickets and reload/top up smart cards.

The huge number of different devices offered by AEP and their configurabil-ity in different versions, fittings and options make it possible to fulfill even the most critical requirements. In the example on the left, the multi-function unit CDB-6 PLUS is matched with a contactless validator and a Pay Machine, that pairs the functions of a TVM with the one of a contactless val-idator and, if required, also of a paper tickets obliterator.

TICKETS IN OFFICES

ET-TIC is a software application, fully integrated in ET, designed to equip ticket offices. Its main func-tions are: • introduction and management

of customer data; • production of personal smart

cards, printing also user data and photograph;

• selling and issuing travel doc-uments on paper, contactless cards or magnetic tickets;

• renewal or topping up of cards.

It is possible to configure ET-TIC in order to present to the user only a subset of functions, for exam-ple excluding issuing of cards and leaving only renewal or top up.

ET-TIC communicates with the Supervisory Center and imports configuration data (e.g. updates in tickets definitions or in their pric-es), synchronizes customer data and exports sales data to the cen-tral system, in order to constitute

the data base for subsequent pro-cessing.

ET-TIC can also work in case of fail-ure of data communication; in this case, almost all operations remain possible. Archives are automati-cally and bi-directionally synchro-nized with the center when the connection is restored.A simplified version is available for kiosks and shops.

TICKETS ON THE BUSES

ET-TIC-BUS allows the driver to offer on the bus most of the services of a ticket office. Single run tickets can be sold and contactless cards reload-ed or renewed. The module can also manage data communication with the center, via GPRS/UMTS or Wi-Fi.ET-TIC-BUS can be used on CDB-5 PLUS or CDB-6 PLUS multifunction units.

ON-BOARD COMPUTER

CDB-6 BOX is the “blind” and ruggedized version of CDB-6 PLUS; it is the ideal device for applica-tions that do not require a driver interface, ticket selling capability or when the driver interface is per-formed by mean of another device (e.g. FMS console).

TABLETOP READERS

DTIC-A can be considered as a “ta-bletop Futura 3A validator”, where the display is replaced by the PC interface. Distinguished by very pleasant and innovative design, it is used in AEP ticket offices for read-ing and writing smart cards.

PORTABLE READERS

TPV-reader is a portable, self-powered contactless coupler that can be connected to a smart-phone or tablet PC via wireless Bluetooth interface. TPV-reader can be worn on the belt and represents so the optimal solution for the mobile ticketing, for example for inspection or sale.

ARRIVA MALTA PROJECT

It is now in operation the new UMTS extension, that makes it pos-sible data communication between AEP on board and central systems, without having to rely on third par-ty subsystems.

Arriva Malta company is owned by Arriva, a leading European provider of proven experience of transport services in 12 European countries, and by Tumas Group, a Maltese company operating in the public area.

Arriva is the largest shareholder with a share of 66.6 percent; the Tumas Group holds 33.3 percent. Arriva Malta started on July, 3 2011 to manage the public transport of the Mediterranean island, with 264 new buses and 920 people, fully replac-ing the previous system based on “owner-drivers” which used charac-teristic vintage means of transport.

Arriva Malta assigned the imple-mentation of technological systems to Thetis, an Italian system integra-tor, that, in November 2010, com-mitted to AEP the project of “Arriva Saver Card” and the whole e-Ticket-ing system.

The supply included the software and on-board equipment, to be integrated with the Thetis vehicle monitoring system. The expected date for startup of the service was July 3rd, 2011 only 8 months after the contract.

Despite of very short time limits and relevant number of variants, AEP technical dept. could succeed respecting the delivery terms with-out even one day delay; on July 3rd, without any pre-exercise period, Arriva Malta e-Ticketing system, en-tirely from AEP, became operative.

A WHOLE ITALIAN REGIONUMBRIA MOBILITÀ

Umbria Mobilità is the public transport operator of Umbria re-gion (Italy), formed by fusion of four pre-existing companies, pro-ducing services for about 30 mil-lion kilometers, 28 by road and 2 by rail, with about 130 million eu-ros turnover.

At the end of July, 2011, Umbria Mobilità decided to commit the

implementation of the ticketing system, based on Calypso GTML contactless smart card, to AEP, for managing 40 ticket offices scat-tered on the regional territory, with the objective of opening the ser-vice to the public on August 29th, just more than one month.

The four companies that merged in Umbria Mobilità had different

data, software and operating pro-cedures; it was therefore neces-sary a complex process of analysis to define technical specifications for their harmonization, but still keeping former individualities, without loosing compatibility with the existing systems. This task was particularly demanding, also to import fare, cards and tickets defi-nitions, user profiles, 70,000 users personal data, polymetrics, lines and sales transactions from four different systems.

AEP developers team, in perfect synergy with Umbria Mobilità technicians, could reach the target: previous system was turned off in the afternoon of August 27, Sat-urday, and on the established day, August 29, the new system became fully operational. On September 10th, 2011, over 23,000 operations of new cards issue, sales and re-newals, had been performed, with a total collected of more than 3 million euros.New extension are in progress in 2013.

AIM VICENZA PROJECT

A SMALL FOOTPRINT UNITCDB-5A is a miniature unit that includes the func-tions of a driver’s console and on-board comput-er. It allows to execute the supervision operations, such as driver’s identification, shift opening and closing, validators control etc. and can as well determine the geographic position, store data in its large memory and communicate via GPRS/UMTS or WIFI.

Since 1911, AIM manages the pub-lic transport service in the city of Vicenza and in the sorrounding ar-eas, producing about 5 millions km/year and carrying 11 millions pas-sengers in the Veneto region (Italy). In 2011 AIM chose AEP as supplier of the new automatic fare collec-tion system, based on ET, The Easy Ticketing software. The AIM Card, used for transporta-tion and parking, is expected to be extended to many other services of the local public administration. The system supplied by AEP includes the Central Supervisory System, four ticket offices and on-board systems composed by CDB-5A multifunc-tion unit (see below), with Wi-Fi

and UMTS communication, GPS-3 receiver and Futura 3A contactless validators. The power of ET openness is, in this case, fully exploited: a third party subsystem is interfaced to ET central system by extensive usage of Web Services to make possible to buy or renew tickets via SMS from any mo-bile phone, a simple and very prac-tical system, that is demonstrat-ed very accepted by users.

MOM ALSO CHOOSES AEPFUTURA 3AMobilità di Marca (Treviso, another city in Veneto region of Italy) chooses Futura 3A. In this application, full capabil-ities of this validator are ex-ploited, by using the internal

UMTS module and GPS.
