The year 2017 is definitely a year to look forward to as this year Athena Best is celebrating our 10th Anniversary! The theme of our annual dinner this year was “The Oscars Party”.

The annual dinner was held on 21 April, 2017 at the Island Shangri-La Hotel. Over 120 internal staff and partners celebrated this extraordinary red-carpet event.

The evening kicked off with cocktail reception at the Atrium Ballroom Library Foyer where all guests arrived dressed to impress, our Chairman, Dr. German Cheung and our Managing Director, Danny Tse gave inspiring opening speeches regarding Athena Best’s journey through the past decade.

It was a fun filled and memorable evening for all of us.

At the start of the year 2017, we participated in one of the most significant charity fundraiser in Hong Kong – The Hong Kong and Kowloon Walk for Millions 2017 hosted by The Community Chest. This year, The Community Chest Hong Kong will allocate HK$35.5 million to support “Family and Children Welfare Services”.

In the early morning on the day of the activity, our colleagues together with their families gathered outside the Hong Kong Stadium enthusiastically. Though it was early January, it was a bright and warm day, every one of us enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Hong Kong Island south while raising funds for the people in need.

Hong Chi Children Home, located in Pinehill Village, Taipo, is a hostel where children aged 6 - 15 with mild intellectual disabilities receive proper training and 24-hour care in a family setting.

In late March, our volunteers had a wonderful Saturday morning visiting these children. We were greeted by Hong Chi’s staff who gave us a general introduction about the hostels and the children’s daily life. Then, we have spent some incredible time with the children making arts and crafts and at the same time, get to know them personally. At the end of the activity, we delightfully received a drawing made by the children.

Governments around the world joined together in introducing a new information gathering system and reporting requirements for financial institutions to help fight against tax evasion – The Common Reporting Standard (“CRS”).

CRS, formally known as the Standard for Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information (“AEOI”), applies to all financial institutions located in a CRS jurisdiction and are obligated to identify and report any financial accounts held by tax residents of overseas reportable jurisdictions for both individuals and entities on an annual basis. Hong Kong, as a participant of the CRS since the 1st of January 2017, is obliged to report to The Hong Kong Inland Revenue Department (“IRD”) any financial account information in tax matters.

All EU countries and more than 100 other jurisdictions have now agreed to become signatories of the new system. Despite the commitment of these jurisdictions, the IRD will only exchange information with jurisdictions with which Hong Kong has a tax treaty or a tax information exchange agreement in place.

It is without doubt that governments and regulators around the world are now dedicated into building a more effective cross border information sharing system to crack down illegal money flow and tax evasion. With this direction solidly in place, clients who used to have a mindset of hiding their assets for whatever reasons should begin shifting their focus to finding legitimate ways to protect their assets.
