More, better, quicker…

Demonstrated for the first time at theAVEVA World Summit in Paris in October, the new AVEVA Everything3D (AVEVAE3D) received an enthusiastic welcomefrom delegates. E3D is set to redefine thefuture of plant design by being:

• Rapid project startup: new projects canbe set up in days not months, whethersingle-site or global collaborations, reducing the time to first deliverables.

• Design efficiency: powerful, integrateddrafting functions, an intuitive userinterface and streamlined design tasks

will significantly increase design officeproductivity.

• Compliance: standards-based design andconfigurable design checking will ensureright-first-time design and reduce oreliminate laborious manual checking.

• Removing rework in construction:integrating 3D laser survey data with the3D design model closes the loop betweendesign and construction, enabling design, fabrication and construction teams towork more effectively together andachieve Lean Construction.

Technical features in AVEVA Everything3Dinclude:

• Integration with 3D laser survey datafor dimensional control in construction

• A next-generation 3D modellingcapability employing advanced 3Dgraphics to provide "real world"representation quality of both thedesign model and laser-scanned pointclouds

• A fully automated and integrated 2Ddrafting capability, saving time andeffort in drawing production andensuring that drawings accuratelyrepresent the true 3D design

• Full interoperability with other designsystems for maximum flexibility andfreedom of choice

• Easy and extensive project re-use and the ability tomodularise design for moreefficient projects

Protecting your investmentin data

Equally important, E3D is fullyinteroperable with AVEVA PDMS,enabling customers to upgradein their own timetable, protecting their investment indesign data assets andeliminating the business risk anddisruption created byincompatible design systems.

AVEVA recognises thechallenges faced by itscustomers when upgradingmission critical applications andhas focused, from the outset, onreducing the technical risks to aminimum. To that end AVEVAhas developed uniquecapabilities to allow PDMS andE3D to be operable on the sameproject at the same time.

AVEVA creates newtechnology opportunitiesAVEVA, one of the leading providers of engineering anddesign software for the plant and marine industries, markedits 45th anniversary this year with a groundbreaking newtechnology which will transform the nature of 3D engineeringdesign. The Lean Revolution

AVEVA E3D is more than just a betteror faster design tool; it is an enabler ofLean Construction in the plantindustries. The one-off, project-basednature of capital projects is notamenable to many of the principles ofLean Manufacturing, but now theability to integrate 3D laser scans ofas-fabricated and as-constructed workwith the design model closes thefeedback loop between constructionand design. This is a breakthrough inproject execution.

Laser scanning is now cheap, quick, accurate and non-invasive, so it can bereadily employed at any point in theproduction and construction process.Physical items –from individual pipespools to major modules or the as-built structure– can be scanned usingany leading scanner system and thescan model quickly integrated into the3D design model in AVEVA E3D. Thisenables the project team to respondquickly and effectively to anydiscrepancies or specification changes, perhaps by adjusting the geometry ofitems still in the design stage to fit the as-built form of preceding items. Reworkcan be reduced or eliminated so thatitems arrive on site in the correctcondition for accurate and efficientconstruction.

Another obstacle to project efficiency isoften the difficulties encountered at the

various levels of review and approvalrequired to maintain progress. Partly, thisarises from the complexity of the issuesto be understood and acted upon, andpartly because key decision makers havemany calls on their time, or travel widely, making it difficult to schedule theiravailability. AVEVA E3D addresses thisproblem also by exploiting newtechnologies used in mobile devices. Notonly does mobile computing enableinformation to be provided to users

anywhere, at any time, it also supportsinnovative ways of organising andpresenting the information in a mannerappropriate to the particular decisionrequired.

Now that this essential enablingtechnology is becoming available, opportunities arise for the development ofLean business processes which make useof it. We may be witnessing the start of abusiness revolution every bit as importantas the Lean Manufacturing one.

AVEVA has listened carefully to itscustomers when creating this next-generation design solution. One issuewhich arose repeatedly is the continuingerosion of skills and experience as olderprofessionals retire to be replaced by anew generation. These new professionalsnot only have less experience than theirseniors, they also have differentexpectations of what technology shoulddo. AVEVA E3D addresses this issue partlythrough a new approach to userinteraction and partly through the greaterembodiment of design rules andstandards. These are implemented in anadvisory manner, not a prescriptive one,so users retain flexibility of working whilethe system alerts them to non-compliantdesign as they work. This ensures thathigh quality design can be readilyachieved while also serving to educatethe less experienced professional whocan 'learn by doing' and understand thereasons for particular rules and standards.
