Google Classroom will be used for assignment attachments or resources, rubrics, sketchbook YouTube tutorial links, submission of artist report, class critiques, and submission of artwork for online portfolio. Comprehensive 1 is the first level Visual Arts class offered in Georgia high schools. It is an overview of the different types of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art and covers the basics of most of the art mediums (supplies used). After Comprehensive 1 is taken and passed then the students are able to sign up for all the other art classes we offer here at New Hampstead: Pottery and Ceramics 1 & 2, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Fibers, and Advanced Placement (AP) Art (can get college credit). We also offer a Fine Arts Diploma Seal for students that have completed a 2-D or 3-D art pathway. The students would need to take Comp. 1 and two other 2-D art classes (drawing & painting) and a 4th art class of their choosing for the 2-D pathway. For the 3-D pathway, the students would need to take Comp. 1 and two 3-D classes (Pottery & Ceramics 1, Pottery & Ceramics 2, Sculpture, or Fibers) and a 4th art class of their choosing. With all this being said, if the students wish to continue their art career here at New Hampstead, it is very important to pass Comprehensive 1 so they are eligible to enroll in the other higher level art classes. We also want those students to have an online portfolio going into those classes so that we can keep track of their artwork and possible consider them for AP Art in the future. So Google Classroom also serve as a resource for us art teachers and the students to keep up with photos of their artwork. Students need to join Google Classroom with the codes below according to what class they are in. They can also download the classroom app on their smart phone. ***Notice below that those are zeros and not the letter “O”.

VISUAL ARTS COMPREHENSIVE I 2019-2020 Syllabus

Visual Arts Course: 50.02110

Course Objective and Purpose: Visual Arts/Comprehensive I introduces art history, art criticism, aesthetic judgment and studio production. This course emphasizes the ability to understand and use the elements of art and principles of design through a variety of media, processes and visual resources. We will also explore master artworks for historical and cultural significance using the Georgia Performance Standards for Visual Arts. Skills to Master:

At the end of this course you will:

Understand and know the elements of art and principles of design

Be able to apply all the elements of art and principles of design to your own art making projects

Be able to recall important artists, art history movements, and relate that to their current projects.

Be able to use different 2-dimensional art mediums such as pencil, color pencils, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, and oil pastels

Learn skills such as shading, drawing from observation, composition, perspective drawing, weaving, ceramics, etc.

Needs and Resources Required Materials:

o Pocket Folder to keep loose papers and bell ringers OR section in your large binder LABELED for this class o 9x12 Sketchbook- Spiral bound and no lines; does not have to be exactly 9x12 but do not purchase the small

ones o A #2 PENCIL…EVERY DAY – if you do not bring a pencil, you can purchase one for 25 cents. o Eraser…EVERY DAY – if you do not bring an eraser, you can purchase a pencil with one for 25 cents o 22”X 28” poster board: This will be folded in half and used to keep your artwork and projects in. If you bring a

colored one then it is easy to spot each day. If you do not bring one in then I have extra white poster board. o Sign-up for the Remind Me Application- this allows students and parents to message the teacher with

questions and the teacher can reach out to the class about deadlines, missing assignments, or any other

important information. The class code is listed on the Remind paper given to you. o $10 for classroom art supplies- this will be used to purchase supplies for our art program for the students to use

and a receipt will be issued when it is turned in. The receipt can be claimed on your taxes as a donation.

FREE 100 IN THE GRADEBOOK WHEN YOU BRING IN ALL OF YOUR SUPPLIES BY THE DEADLINE!!! (pocket folder or pocket/section in binder and sketchbook) You are also welcome to bring any personal art supplies that you want to use for your projects.

All of your supplies are able to be stored in the classroom so you will have access to them daily and don’t have to worry about bringing them to class or forgetting to bring them to class.

Artist-inspired Projects

Design Basics/utilizing good use of composition

Policies and Procedures Class Rules:

1. Respect yourself, classmates, teacher, supplies, and classroom. Disrespect of any kind and non-compliance will result in disciplinary action (see below).

2. Food and Drink is allowed in moderation. Anyone who does not clean up after themselves will cause the whole class to lose this privilege. Food trash DOES NOT get thrown away in the big trash can. That one only gets emptied once a week and we don’t want to smell your food for a week and we don’t want fruit flies.

3. Electronic devices: Devices are only allowed for personal music listening while working or for accessing resources during production. No one else should be able to hear your music and you must wait to use your device until all instruction has been given. Earbuds may be used to cover ONE ear only; you must be able to hear what’s going on around you. NO BEATS ALLOWED. DO NOT ASK ME TO WEAR BEATS!

If you are not following the cell phone policy, you will be asked to put your cell phone away and the incident will be documented. The discipline steps will be followed for each incident after.

4. LANGUAGE. Offensive and inappropriate language will not be tolerated. If you want to drop the “F bomb” in class, you will call your parents and tell it to them. The second incident will result in a phone call and afterschool detention. The third incident will result in a referral. Any other curse words will result in you depositing 25 cents into the “swear jar”. If you reach $2 total, you will receive a phone call home.

5. The school’s TARDY and DRESS CODE POLICY is enforced (see below). Students need to be seated & ready when the bell rings.

6. NO TALKING while the teacher is talking or during class instruction. 7. Always CLEAN UP after yourself before leaving the classroom or you will have to write clean-up rules. If I

don’t know who or what table did not clean up then the whole class has to write the rules before we handle art supplies again. So hold your classmates accountable for cleaning up!

8. DO NOT MOVE CHAIRS AROUND.

DAILY CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

1. Begin working on Bell Ringers. Bell Ringers will be graded every ten. Late Bell Ringers are not accepted and will result in a permanent zero. Students are responsible for making up bell ringers when absent.

2. Students are to remain in their seats and work with the classmates at their table. Students may get out of their seat to retrieve or return artwork or art supplies.

3. Do not yell or talk across the classroom. 4. Ear buds must be out of both ears and off your neck during instruction. 5. Sitting where you want, listening to music with one ear bud, and the use of your cellular device are all privileges

and these privileges can be revoked. 6. Start cleaning up with 10 minutes left in class. After cleanup, you are to remain in your seat until the bell rings.

Failure to do so will be documented and the appropriate discipline step will be taken. 7. Any days where a substitute teacher is present, the classwork assigned must be turned in on that day or it will

result in a permanent zero.

Grading/Evaluation:

Class Work: Drawings, sketchbook assignments, bell ringers, quizzes & participation 40% Assessments: Unit Art Projects, written reports, tests, etc. 60% ***Be sure to print your full name and block number on the back of all assignments

Rubrics: Each project needs to be turned in with a rubric. The rubric consists of the Essential Questions for the project, your self-assessment, and the grading rubric for the teacher to complete. Projects will not be graded without a rubric attached. Attach your rubric with a paper clip and do NOT staple your artwork. *Incomplete projects or projects turned in without a rubric will not be accepted. Course Requirements/Expectations: Attendance Attendance will be taken daily. It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for missed work. Five days will be granted for make-up work with an excused absence or the student will receive a zero for the assignment. All classroom resources will be located on Google Classroom to access. EMAIL YOUR TEACHER IF YOU ARE OUT UNEXPECTEDLY. Tardy Policy All unexcused tardies are documented and a parent will be contacted by the second tardy and the student will receive afterschool detention by the third tardy. For the student’s second tardy, they are to complete a writing assignment and will receive after school detention if it is not completed by the next class day. All subsequent tardies will result in an office referral. Three times a week, the school will be doing tardy sweeps. Students caught in those sweeps will not be permitted into the classroom until they have met with their assistant principal. Dress Code Policy

Students should not enter into the class unless they are in compliance with the school’s dress code policy. The dress code is as follows:

White or maroon collared shirt. The collar of your shirt must be visible at all times during class. If the teacher has to ask you to see your collared shirt, this will count as a dress code violation.

Hoodies: Must be white, maroon, gold, or black. NO HOOD on the head.

Jackets: Can be any color as long as it has a zipper.

PANTS or SHORTS must be black or khaki. No leggings or cargo pants allowed. SKIRTS must be below your fingertips.

Book bags must be clear or mesh and if they are not they will not enter the classroom. You will not be allowed to retrieve items from your “hallway” book bag after the tardy bell has rung. If you are outside the door going through your book bag after the bell rings then it will be counted as a tardy. They need to go in your locker. If you bring your non-dress code compliant book bag into the room then that will result in a dress code violation.

No hats or hoods can be worn in the classroom. Doing so will result in a dress code violation.

If you walk into the room and are not in dress code, it will count as a dress code violation.

If you fail to follow the dress code, the following steps will occur: 1st Offense: Warning, teacher will document 2nd Offense: Phone call home; parent contact and violation documented 3rd Offense: Phone call home; parent contact and violation documented 4th Offense and any after: Referral submitted to your assistant principal; every violation after the 4th offense will always result in a referral

Discipline Steps

The following steps will be taken for Level 1 and most Level 2 behaviors. These behaviors consist of tardies, disrespect, defiance, and/or refusal to follow the classroom rules.

1st Offense: documented warning 2nd Offense: documented behavior and parent contact 3rd Offense: document behavior, parent contact, and detention 4th Offense and any after: discipline referral sent to your administrator

Late Work Policy All work turned in late after deadline will receive 10% less of grade earned, and an additional 10% each day thereafter. ***Bell Ringers and substitute work will NOT be accepted late and will result in a permanent zero. If you are absent the day you turn in bell ringers then you will turn them in the day you come back. THERE WILL BE NO PASSES TO LEAVE THE CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE CALLED FOR BY THE FRONT OFFICE OR AN ADMINISTRATOR. IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY THEN I HAVE TO CALL YOUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL TO ESCORT YOU. It is important that are in the class the whole block and you need to use the restroom, go to your locker, or do anything else in between your classes.

Additional Information Artwork

Students are expected/encouraged to submit artwork to be juried in local, state, and national art competitions, including school sponsored exhibits that are adjudicated by the Savannah College of Art & Design. Students agree to allow New Hampstead High School to display and otherwise use their image for publication rights and promotion. All works must be original and from the artist’s own creation. Tutorial/Assistance

Tutorial is available on Wednesdays 2:40-3:15. There is a sign-up sheet on the wall by my door to sign up for that week’s tutorial. It is best to check with me ahead of time to make sure I am available in case I have something come up. Email or the Remind App is the best way to contact me.
