Welcome Trustees and Governors,Faculty, Staff, Alumni, and Friends:

As an open admission, comprehensive community college, Union CountyCollege is one of 1,200 American higher education institutions known as“democracy’s colleges.” We proudly welcome all people who aspire toimprove their lives through higher education.

All American community colleges share fundamental mission elements. Inthis annual report, we take a look at Union’s progress over the past yearwith regard to each of these core mission elements of a comprehensivecommunity college. These pillars include transfer opportunities for four-year degrees, career programs for employment, life-long learning courses,and developmental education.

We also recognize the mission elements that have contributed to Union’sunique status as a world-class institution. These include our unparalleledcommitment to strategic planning, to student success, and to diversity.

On the next pages, we address some of the ways that Union CountyCollege provides an excellent return on the community’s investment. Afterthat, we feature some of the key achievements of the year 2012 as theyrelate to our multi-faceted mission as a comprehensive community college.

Among the highlights we feature in this report, two take center stage asseminal moments in Union County College.

The first was our College’s memorable resilience throughout the Oct. 29-30 onslaught of Hurricane Sandy. Fallen trees, floodedbuildings, and massive power outages did not deter the employees of theCollege in their service to students and to the community. Rather thanmaking excuses, our employees rolled up their sleeves and workedtirelessly to reopen our Elizabeth and Plainfield Campuses on Nov. 1.Until the Cranford Campus reopened the following week, faculty and staffwere able to relocate Cranford classes to Elizabeth or else provide onlineaccess to every class through a Hurricane Sandy ANGEL Shell.

Albeit less dramatic, the second major highlight of 2012 was Union’sunqualified success with our Periodic Review Report. The PRR is a five-year progress report as part of the 10-year accreditation cycle with ouraccrediting body, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.The Middle States response to Union’s report commended the College forthe “quality of the report and process.”

Hurricane Sandy Even after the lights went out,Union County College stayed true to its “Fiat Lux” motto.Two days after Hurricane Sandy’s Oct. 30 onslaught,the Elizabeth campus was providing a safe haven forstudents and staff. After three days, Plainfield wasopen as well. However, with the Cranford Campusremaining dark during the first days of November,about 40 employees joined President McMenamin ina group calling itself the “Hurricane Sandy RecoveryTeam.” The group’s goal was to get the College ontrack for a reopening on Mon., Nov. 5. Elizabeth andPlainfield were able to resume classes as scheduledduring the Nov. 3 weekend. The monumental effortwould be to work out the logistics of moving Cranfordclasses either to another campus or to an onlinecourse-management shell. That’s no mean featconsidering that about 60 percent of the College’sclasses are in Cranford. The Recovery Team did itspreparation work on Nov. 1, 2, and 3, primarily fromits command post in the first floor Student ServicesCenter of the Kellogg Building. The Elizabethcommand post included a bank of computers forfaculty department chairs and for faculty needing helpmoving course work online into an existing ANGELshell or to the newly created “Hurricane SandyANGEL Shell.”

Union’s Director of Instructional Design Beth Ritter-Guth helped faculty upload materials either into anexisting ANGEL Shell or into the new Shell, whichstudents could access through “Owl’s Nest.” Staff andfaculty worked 12-hour days throughout the weekend.Maintenance workers, public safety officers, andinformation technology specialists kept all-night vigils.

The College set up hotlines for students to call to askabout classes and for faculty to call to get helpposting materials. By Mon., Nov. 5, staff and studentvolunteers worked information tables to directCranford students to classrooms in the Kellogg orLessner buildings or to the Plainfield campus. Othershelped students find course work online usingcomputers in the Career Services Center on Kellogg’sfirst floor. Public Safety officers helped Cranford-basedstudents and faculty find their way.

After days of displacement, Cranford classes wereback in Cranford classrooms by Wed., Nov. 7.President McMenamin praised the faculty and stafffor working together throughout the crisis. “Throughoutthis challenging time, all members of the UnionCounty College community have been drawn together to help our students and our community.Thank you for your resilience and your patience.”

Middle StatesAlmost PRR-fectFive years after the Middle States Commissionon Higher Education called Union CountyCollege “a leader among its peers,” theCollege once again earned distinction as amodel community college in 2012.

Union’s latest accolades came as a result of theCommission’s approval of the College’s PeriodicReview Report (PRR). In a letter to PresidentMcMenamin, the Commission not onlyreaffirmed the College’s accreditation, but alsoacted “to commend the institution for the qualityof (the report) and process.”

Receiving acommendation fromMiddle States is a rarehonor. Along with thecommendation, theCommission’s reviewers shared their insights thatwill lay the groundwork for the College’s pursuitof reaccreditation in 2017.

The PRR is a five-year progress report as part ofthe 10-year accreditation cycle. The final report,which the College submitted for Middle Statesreview in the Spring of 2012, reflects the effortsof dozens of College faculty and staff.

Employees who headed the PRR team were Executive Director Dr. Patricia S. Biddar,Senior Professor Dr. William Rohrer, SeniorProfessor Dr. Denise Lagos, and VicePresident of Academic Affairs Dr. Maris Lown.

President McMenamin praised Union’s PRRteam for developing the report through “acollegial effort in capturing the record of thesubstantial progress that the College is makingtoward institutional goals. Most important, thePRR demonstrates the vitality of this growing andchanging college as we reach out to thecommunity we serve.”

Dr. Lown joined the president in thankingeveryone who contributed to the success of thePRR. “Faculty and staff from every departmentand work unit had a hand in this report,” shesaid. “We celebrate our victory, but also keepin mind that a great deal of work lies aheadover the next five years. We can’t just sit backand rest on our laurels.”

President McMenamin added, “We have tocontinue to move forward, make progress, and renew ourselves.” 3

2012 Key AccomplishmentsStudent Success Plan – In order to increase student success at UnionCounty College, an annual Student Success Plan was developed aroundthe concepts of teaching and learning, support services, athletics andclubs, and facilities and furnishings.

Mathematics SuccessCenter – The Collegeopened its first MathSuccess Center on thefirst floor of the MacKayLibrary at the start of thespring semester. Mathtutors help studentssucceed in all levels ofmath classes. A secondMath Success Centeropened on the Elizabethcampus at the start of thespring ’13 semester.

Academic Master Plan – Through College-wide collaboration, theCollege created the Academic Master Plan for 2012-2015. TheAcademic Master Plan is designed to provide strategic and operationaldirection for academic planning over the next three years.

Institutional Effectiveness Plan – Through its Institutional EffectivenessPlan, Union County College assesses student learning, the heart of theinstitutional mission, along with all services that support and facilitatestudent learning. It addresses student success outcomes as well as studentlearning outcomes.

Career Services Center – In support of the “Union CountyMeans Business” initiative, the College opened the Career ServicesCenter on June 1. Located on the first floor of the Kellogg Buildingon the Elizabeth campus, the Center provides support for Countyresidents through innovative effective job development services.

All College Day – The first All College Day was held on theCranford campus on August 25. The day was an opportunity fornew students, potential students and alumni to come to the Collegeand learn about Union County College.

“First Week” – More than 100members of the faculty and staffvolunteered their time to welcome ournew and returning students to all threecampuses for the Fall ’12 semester. EachCollege employee wore a button thatread “Ask Me”, which prompted studentsto ask a multitude of questions.

“Operation Graduation” – Thecampaign to encourage students tocomplete their degree increased thenumber of graduates in 2012 to 1,083,the largest class in the history of the College.

Provost of theCranfordCampus – Dr. John R.Woznicki wasnamed the firstProvost/AssistantVice President ofAcademic Affairsfor the Cranford Campus during 2012.

Union’s Women’s Softball & SoccerTeams – Women’s Softball & Soccerwere the newest Division III sports addedto the College’s repertoire of sportofferings during 2012. The inauguralseason of the Women’s Softball teambegan on March 20. In the fall,Women’s Soccer debuted at Union.

Emergency Operations Plan – TheCollege revised and disseminated anEmergency Operations Plan that meetsNew Jersey State standards. The Boardapproved plan features improvedemergency communications systems, aclearly defined incident commandstructure, and a chain of authority.

St. Patrick’s Day ParadeUnion County College students, faculty, and staff sportedtheir green sweatshirts and marched in the Union County St.Patrick’s Day Parade on March 10. President McMenaminled our team of more than 120 students as well as James DeLa Cruz, dressed as a leprechaun. Many dignitariesmarched in the parade, including U.S. Senator RobertMenendez and State Senators Raymond Lesniak andNicholas Scutari. The Union County Freeholders as well asElizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage and Assemblymembers Joe Cryan, Annette Quijano, and Linda Stender,joined in the day’s activities.

Soccer TeamPractices & Gamesin Berkeley HeightsThe new Snyder Avenue Field inBerkeley Heights became thehome field to Union’s Men’s andWomen’s Soccer Teams.

Governor Florio at GEDThroughout the year, Union County College has an activerole in helping residents obtain their Untied States citizenshipor complete their General Education Degree (GED). Morethan 70 students achieved such success and were recog nized at a ceremony held on June 12. FormerGovernor James Florio, who has a GED, delivered thekeynote address.

Students Help Beautify Downtown Cranford Just like the Dr.Seuss character the Lorax, Union studentshelped beautify downtown Cranford on May 17. More thana dozen students volunteered their time and helped paint thebenches downtown.

Career Center Opens toServe College and theCommunity In support of the “Union County MeansBusiness” initiative put forth by Union CountyFreeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella,the College opened the Career ServicesCenter on June 1. Located on the first floor ofthe Kellogg Building on the Elizabeth campus,the Center, along with partner nonprofits andgovernment agencies, provides support forCounty residents through innovative, effectivejob-development services. The Center benefitsthree key constituent groups: College students,local businesses, and local residents. Alongwith the Union County Department of HumanServices, the chief partners with the Collegeare the County’s Workforce Investment Board,local business advisory boards, the UnionCounty Economic Development Council, theUnion County Alliance, and city and regionalChambers of Commerce.

Union CommunityThankful for New Lights in ElizabethPresident McMenamin was joined by gratefulstudents, faculty, and staff on the Elizabethcampus on February 22, to thank ElizabethMayor J. Christian Bollwage for the newtraffic lights and crosswalks on W. JerseyAvenue. With a new light near the LessnerBuilding and one near the Kellogg Building, itis now safer and easier to navigate across theroadways from the parking deck to thecampus.

Cranford Businesses OfferDiscount With College IDCranford businesses are happy to be gettingUnion’s business. Having a Union CountyCollege ID card helps save money forstudents, faculty, and staff members. Manybusinesses in downtown Cranford offer a 10percent discount to customers with a UnionCounty College ID. 7

2012 Financial Aid FactsIn 2012, the Financial Aid Officeprocessed more than 16,000 financialaid applications and over 8100 students were awarded $37,289,790.

Among federal aid programs, 6,774students received a Federal Pell Grant,1,603 students received SupplementalEducational Opportunity Grants, 1,654received a Subsidized Stafford Loan,1,705 received an UnsubsidizedStafford Loan, and 7 students receivedfunds through a PLUS loan.

With regard to state financial aidprograms, 2,118 students received aTuition Aid Grant (TAG), 238 receivedfunds from the Educational OpportunityFund (EOF), 54 students received fundsfrom NJ STARS, 8 students receivedDistinguished Scholars funding or UrbanScholars funding, and 14 borrowed aNJ CLASS Loan.

Union & Caldwell Perfect TogetherIn an historic moment for the College, PresidentMcMenamin and President Nancy H. Blattner ofCaldwell College closed two agreements between thecolleges. The signing ceremony was held in the KelloggBuilding on the Elizabeth campus on Sept.18. The firstdeal was the articulation agreement between the twoschools. The second was a provision for CaldwellCollege to begin offering upper-level bachelor’s degreecourses in Psychology, Business Administration, andCriminal Justice on the Elizabeth Campus.

New AA Program for Electrical WorkersThe College has teamed up with the InternationalBrotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local 102) to developa program to provide apprentice electricians with accessto a College degree while they learn the electrical trade.

The new Associate degree program will begin in fall2013. IBEW Local 102 President Bernie Corrigan seesthis partnership with the College as a boon for hismembership. “This articulation agreement adds value toour apprentices’ training and truly rounds out theireducation. Together with highly specialized training aselectricians, they will have a solid grounding in a collegeeducation from one of the finest community colleges inthe State.”

Joining the Union and the College for the signingwas NJ State Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno.The Lieutenant Governor toured the IBEW’s facilitiesand praised this partnership between the Union andthe College.

Biology Students Wear Pink!Pink rubber gloves were the fashion rage inthe Biology and Allied Health Department’sAnatomy and Physiology classes in Octoberin support of Breast Cancer AwarenessMonth. Professor William Dunscombe,

Professional Development WorkshopsFaculty members have the opportunity to expand or refresh themselves professionally through dozens of topicalworkshops offered on all three campuses. In spring 2012,Associate Professor Joann M. Levey coordinated 74 on campus professional workshops; another 18 in the summer of2012; and 44 in fall 2012. Workshop topics range fromsoftware skills to CPR training.

Dr. ThomasOmbrello, SeniorProfessor in theBiology and AlliedHealth Department,attempted topreserve a historictree that waspreviously located onthe property of TheSeeing Eye school in

Morristown, NJ. When an unexpected storm inOctober weakened a copper beech tree thathad been on the property since the 19thcentury, it was recommended to be takendown. Before doing so, seeds were collectedand given to Dr. Ombrello, who is a specialistin propagating historic trees, to try to grow theseeds in Union’s nursery on the Cranfordcampus. Once achieved, a sapling will bereturned to The Seeing Eye School and plantedon their property so the historic tree cancontinue to live on.

Associate ProfessorJune Pomann, of theInstitute for IntenseEnglish, presented“Travel with Me:Enhancing Self-Motivation” at theNational On CourseConference in April.

Dr. Phillip Papas, of the Economics/Government/History Department, attended theSociety for Military History's Annual Conferencein Arlington, Virginia where he chaired thepanel session, "Model Behavior: PoliticalCurrents within Military Actions" in May. In Junehe published a book review of Ruma Chopra'sUnnatural Rebellion: Loyalists in New York Cityduring the Revolution in The Journal of AmericanHistory. In August, he presented, “The EnigmaticGeneral Charles Lee” at the St. Paul’s NationalHistoric Site in Mount Vernon, New York.

Professor Michael Z Murphy of theEnglish/Fine Arts/Modern LanguagesDepartment, had his poem, “Sonnet: A DietCoke Found After a Million Years” published inthe fall 2011 edition of Nebo: A Literary Journalpublished by the Department of English atArkansas Tech University. In April, he presentedthe keynote address at the New JerseyCounseling Association Annual Conference. Hespoke about a topic he teaches at Union, “TheTen Worst Listening Habits.”

Professor John McDermott, of theEnglish/Modern Languages/Fine ArtsDepartment, presented a workshop called“Presenting Poems Out Loud” at St. Mary’s HighSchool in Elizabeth in January. He also servedas a judge at their “Poetry Out Loud”competition. In March he was a workshopleader for the “Giving Voice” session held inconjunction with the Geraldine DodgeFoundation. In May he was a workshop leaderfor the “Common Gathering” session in whichteachers in 30 locations of “Giving Voice”participated.

Adjunct Instructor Debra Scheibe, of theEnglish/Fine Arts/Modern LanguageDepartment, published a novella entitled“Avilon,” a story about an autistic man in his40’s who lives at home with his parents and thevarious joys and tensions of their lives together.

Adjunct Instructor Joseph S. Pizzo, of theEnglish/Fine Arts/Modern LanguagesDepartment, had his poem entitled “CulturalDisconnect” which addressed the topic “TheEffect of Classics-only Classes on YA (YoungAdult Fiction) Readers” published in the annualNew Jersey English Journal, a peer-reviewedpublication sponsored by the New JerseyCouncil of Teachers of English.

Senior ProfessorRobert Yoskowitz, of the English/FineArts/ModernLanguagesDepartment, hadthree photomontagephotographs ondisplay at theMetropolitanMuseum of Art in

New York in December. His works are exhibitedin “Faking It: Manipulated Photography BeforePhotoshop.” He also had three of hisphotographic images on display at the ‘hpgrpGallery’ in a group exhibition entitled, “BeyondOne Lens-Over a Hundred Eyes” in New York,NY in May.

Librarians Elsa Bruguier, MLS, MA andMargaret Deng, MLS, presented at the NewJersey Library Association forum, “Content &Connection: Libraries and Communities BuildThem Together.” Speaking as part of the “Here’sto Your Health: Health Information for yourLibrary” panel discussion, Bruguier describedthe iPad initiative at the Plainfield CampusLibrary. Deng spoke about the partnership shehas cultivated with the Trinitas Hospital Nursing program and the multi-faceted ways,including reference assistance, collections and resources, and instruction, in which theKellogg Library serves both Union students and Trinitas enrolled students.

Dr. Jack Patuto, of theBiology and AlliedHealth Department,has been an activemember of DoctorsWithout Borders formany years. He hasspent time in Haiti withthe Hope for HaitiTeam that wasestablished by the

Greater Shiloh Church. The team is composedof medical staff and clergy from severalchurches and organizations in Pennsylvania,New York, and New Jersey. They all have onething in common, “the love of the people.” Theyall wanted to lend a helping hand to the peopleof Haiti and show their support and love duringthe restoration process of the nation. Dr. Patutowill be heading back to Haiti this June tocontinue his work.

Thisaward is given annually to faculty, staff, and administrators whoare innovators in teaching and learning.

Jamale Davis –Jazz BassistJamale Davis is one of Union’stalented employees. Jamale is acustodian on the Cranford campus andcontinually surprises us with his manytalents and interests. He taught himselfto read music, learned the jazz genre,and learned to play the bass – byhimself, just plucking away…! Jamalehas been fortunate to play with notable

musicians. This allows him to keep learning. He says “I don’t write my own music, I focus quitea bit on my ear and learning songs and standards.” It’s been said that greatness is born ofzero doubt. There is no doubt, Jamale Davis is a jazz legend in the making.

Union County College students reachout to their COMMUNITY in manyways. Whether by supporting theBond Referendum that will benefitcounty colleges, supporting ourneighbors in Plainfield or participatingin a blood drive, Union students reachout to their COMMUNITY and workto meet the needs of others.

On October 8, Union County College students joined college students from throughout the state at Rutgers University’s NewBrunswick campus for the Building Our Future Bond Campaign Kick-Off. The event was held in support of the $750 million bondreferendum which passed in November. $150 million is expected to be allocated to county colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)

Pictured above is the Induction Ceremony of the Iota Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the honor societyof two-year colleges. Induction Ceremonies are held in the fall and spring semesters. In order to become amember of PTK, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours of coursework, maintain a gradepoint average higher than a 3.5 and participate in volunteer activities throughout the semester. In February,

at the Middle States Region 25th Annual Convention, the Iota Xi Chapter wonseveral awards. The Chapter was recognized with the Five Star ChapterDevelopment Plan Award and the Honors in Action Project Award. At theAnnual Phi Theta Kappa International Convention held in April, the Iota XiChapter won the Hallmark Distinguished Chapter Award. The award was givenfor the work done on the Honors in Action Project and the College Project doneby the chapter. PTK’s achievements ranked the chapter as 27th of the 570 whoparticipated nationwide.

Pictured left are two examples of PTK volunteer activities. At the far left, PTKmembers enjoy the beautiful weather while cleaning the Peace Garden on theCranford campus. On the left, PTK members invited students from the Plainfieldschool district to come to campus and learn more about chemistry. This Honors-In-Action project was designed to motivate and encourage specialneeds students to continue their education beyond high school by giving themthe opportunity to work in a real laboratory.

Play 4Kay is a national initiative for coaches to raisebreast cancer awareness and funds for the research.Named for the late Kay Yow, former North CarolinaState University Women’s Basketball Coach, the Play4Kay Cancer Fund raises funds and awareness. Thebasketball team sold motivational bracelets, all proceedswere donated to the cancer fund.

The Lady Owls also celebrated an excellent finish to theirregular season by defeating NJCAA Division I ASACollege for Excellence 54-47. The Owls clinched theGarden State Athletic Conference Championship.

Owens Receives AwardOn January 22, 2012, at the 26th annual, statewide celebration of“National Girls and Women in Sports Day,” Union County College’sWomen Basketball player, Shanique Owens, was honored by theNational Association for Girls and Women in Sports. The award waspresented for outstanding athletic performance and academicachievement. Owens, a freshman, plays forward.

The awards ceremony at Seton Hall University marked the 40thanniversary of the landmark Title IX legislation. Title IX – a law prohibitingthe exclusion of women or men in educational programs based on theirsex – opened a window for female athletes. The event theme was: “Title IX at 40: In It for the Long Run.” Shanique is pictured with her coach Rahim Graham.

Lady Owls are Region XIX Division II ChampsCongratulations to the Women’s Basketball team who secured the title ofRegion XIX Champions on March 3, by defeating Lackawanna Collegeby a score of 60-53. They came back for the win after trailing by 2points at halftime. Lady Owl Bianca Partlow was named the TournamentMVP. She led the scoring for the team with 16 points, 10 steals, 6rebounds, and 4 assists. Brittany Baker added 15 points and 8rebounds. Shanique Owens contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds. AikaEmmanuel finished with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. QuiannaTrawick contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds. Congratulations to secondyear coach, Rahim Graham, named Region XIX Coach of the Year.

Union County College Athletes NamedAcademic All StarsThree members of the Union County College Men’s Soccer Team havebeen named to the All Region XIX Team in Division III. Jimmy Lima(Elizabeth) and Yvener Guerrier (Brooklyn) were named to the FirstTeam. Juan Ortiz (Elizabeth) was named to the Second Team. Fourmembers of the Men’s Soccer Team were named to the All Garden StateAthletic Conference. Jimmy Lima and Yvener Guerrier were named tothe First Team. Juan Ortiz was named to the Second Team. DanielVasquez-Lopen (Elizabeth) was named to the Third Team.

One member of the Union County College Women’s Soccer Team wasnamed to the All Region XIX Team in Division III. Tiffany Williams(Roselle Park) was named to the Third Team. She was also named to theAll Garden State Athletic Conference Second Team. And one member ofthe Union County College Women’s Volleyball Team was named to theAll Region XIX Team in Division III. Maria Collantes (Summit) was namedto the Second Team.

Union Has a Softball TeamThe inaugural season of the Women’s Softball team began on March 20led by coaches, Danielle Kinley, who played at Penn State andprofessionally, and Nicole Spiotta. The team plays at Nomahegan Park.

Men’s Soccer Team are GSAC ChampionsCongratulations to the Men’s Soccer team – the 2012 Garden StateAthletic Conference Champions. They beat County College of Morris bya score of 1-0, the only goal of the game was scored by YvenerGuerrier. The Owls finished with an overall record at 16-1-2 and 11-1in Region XIX. They advanced to Round 1 of the play-offs to defeatGloucester County College for a spot in the Region XIX Semi-Finalswhere they played Montgomery County College. I

Women’s Soccer Team in its Inaugural SeasonWomen’s Soccer is the newest Division III sport at Union CountyCollege. Team members are all from Union County, including Elizabeth,Roselle Park, Rahway, Linden, Plainfield, Kenilworth, Cranford, Union,and Scotch Plains. The team is lead by Head Coach Halid Alhassanand Assistant Coaches Angie Correia and Garnet Roberts-Batson, amember of the College’s 2009 National Championship Men’s Soccerteam. The Women’s Soccer team showed marked improvementthroughout the season, securing their first conference victory and secondvictory of the season when they defeated Raritan Valley CommunityCollege by a score of 2-0 on Oct. 15. The Owls ended their season with a 2-14 record and are looking forward to an improved season next year.

Students, Clubs & Activities Pizza with the President In order to interact personally with the students and receive“grassroots” feedback, Dr. McMenamin treats groups ofstudents to pizza at a different campus each month. Theseluncheons connect the College to the community andconnect the President with the students. At left, the Presidenthosts lunch with students at Brooklyn Pizza in Cranford.

Veterans’ Day CelebrationThe College’s new Veterans Club hosted a series of eventsin honor of Veterans’ Day. The day began with the raisingof the flag on the Cranford campus by students who servedin the Marine Corps and Army. A ceremony took place atnoon in the Richel Commons which included recognition of allbranches of the military and was highlighted by the cuttingof the cake celebrating the Marine Corps’ 237th Birthday.

LPN Students Save a Life Professor Carol Saunders-Corbin led a group of LicensedPractical Nursing Students to the Salvation Army HealthScreening Fair in Plainfield. While there, a mancomplained of chest pains. Under Prof. Saunders-Corbin’sguidance, the students assessed the man’s health anddetermined that he was suffering a heart attack. The manwas rushed to the hospital and survived the crisis.

Students Star in The Runner StumblesFor the first time in nearly two decades, Union studentspresented a play in the Roy Smith Theatre. Directed byProfessor Michael Z Murphy and starring nine students, TheRunner Stumbles told the story of real events that took placein the 1911 in the Michigan backwoods.

AlumniAssociation

On October 25th the Alumni Association hosted afun but very competitive alumni volleyballtournament on the Cranford Campus. Thetournament was at max capacity with over 40alumni returning to Union County College for the 6vs. 6 volleyball tournament.

The Alumni Association continued to bring in NewJersey authors for the Alumni Association AuthorsSeries. Alumna, Jamie Novak ’99 presented “60Minutes to a Happier & More Organized You”.

Jamie shared organization tips on how to organizeeverything from your entryway to your office. Thesecond author that the Alumni Association hostedwas Craig McManus presenting “So You Think YouHave A Ghost?”. Due to his large popularity, thiswas Craig McManus second time presenting at theAlumni Association Author Series.

Another great social event was held at Cervantesrestaurant in Cranford – an alumni Happy Hour.Several alumni came out after work to spend timeand catch-up with other Union alumni.

The Union County College Alumni Association is anindependent non-profit organization that works tobuild and strengthen relationships between theCollege and its alumni, as well as with thecommunity.

Any individual who has completed a minimum of30 credits is eligible to join the Alumni Association.Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of eachmonth at 7pm, and are open to all alumni andmembers of the College.

The Association supports the Alumni AssociationScholarship, which assists part-time students in financial need, and awards the Alumni Prize atgraduation to the graduate with the highest GPA.

Continuing Education,Industry-Business Institute& Retail Skills CenterA State Leader in Noncredit Education –Union County College enrolled 8,672students in personal and professionaldevelopment courses in 2012.

In 2012, Continuing Education introduced new certificates in Mobile Marketing, CiscoCertified Networking Associate Security and CompTIA Network +. Besides offering theseclasses on the Cranford campus, for the first time the department provided a full range ofcourses in Elizabeth and held a successful open house at the Elizabeth campus inSeptember, 2012.

Serving Business & IndustryUnion County College’s Industry-BusinessInstitute served more than 150 localcompanies in 2012 by providing employeetraining in basic skills, management skills,computer skills and technical skills to morethan 800 students, earning over $200,000

in revenue. Much of the funding for these programs is providedthrough the NJ Council of County College’s Consortium and the NewJersey Business & Industry Association.

• Provided Contract Training programs and/or New JerseyConsortium of Community College for Workforce and EconomicDevelopment training programs to more than 150 companies inUnion County. Programs included Supervisory Training, English as aSecond Language, Microsoft Office, General Computers, andCustomer Service.

• Continued to implement a $400,000 Congressional Earmark tolead a year-long initiative to define local “green” job opportunities,and design, field-test, revise, package and disseminate packagesof instructional and related service for selected “green” jobs.

• Received $148,950 in Community Development Block Grants(CDBG) from the City of Elizabeth to provide for continued fundingfor the Retail Skills Center located at the Jersey Gardens Mall.Specifically, these funds provide for retail/customer service andother job placement skills as well as classroom training for localElizabeth residents.

Retail Skills CenterThe Retail Skills Center at the Jersey Gardens Mall is managed byUnion County College. It is a valuable resource for the residents of theCity of Elizabeth with its training and job placement services. It servesthe residents and employers in thegreater Elizabeth area byinstilling in the residentsa sense of jobresponsibility,knowledge ofemployerexpectations andskills important forsuccess in meetingthe challenges of theretail industry.

• In 2012, the center placed464 city residents in positions with more than 100 differentcompanies. Over the past three years, 1485 were prepared andplaced through training classes, job counseling and job fairs.

• In this same time period, the center trained 164 residents inCustomer Service and Sales related programs.

• 1461 residents took advantage of job counseling services at the Center.

• The benefits of the Retail Skills Center were also felt by employers atthe Jersey Gardens Mall who took advantage of 23 job fairsmanaged by the Center. New stores that open this year wereKipling, Applebees, Popeyes, and Tahari.

• A total of 5820 residents were served in 2012 for training, jobfairs, job counseling and outreach events in the City of Elizabeth.

United Airlines2012 SummerAgentsProgram

Over the past four years, Union County College hasparticipated in the Summer Agents Program for UnitedAirlines at Newark Liberty International Airport. The RetailSkills Center has managed the program for the airline.During 2012, 114 students were pre-screened at theCollege’s Elizabeth campus for a final interview with UnitedAirlines. A total of 67 candidates were selected for the finalinterview. Of those, 36 were Union County College students.

Nine Union County College students were hired for theprogram in 2012.

Cranford Parking Lot Improvements and Road RealignmentParking and Traffic Flow Renovations took place on the CranfordCampus over the summer. The Springfield Avenue entry of the Collegewas expanded allowing for a more efficient flow of traffic through theSpringfield Avenue entrance. Additional parking was also added.

Solar PanelsSolar panels have been placed on the roof ofeach of the Cranford campus buildings. Thesepanels were placed through the efforts of the

Union County Improvement Authority. Aninteractive information kiosk was installed in the

Richel Student Commons. The kiosk allowsviewing of real time data from the solar panels.Shown are Engineering/Technology Associate

Smoking SheltersSmoking shelters were installed on all three

Relocated TrailersSince the college values the importance of ourpresence in the COMMUNITY, we moved sixstorage trailers previously located by the hedgein Parking Lot 2 to the back of Parking Lot 5 inCranford. This move freed up additional parkingspaces for our students.

Plainfield Library On April 23rd, 2012 the Plainfield CampusLibrary was flooded when the ejector pit pumpsbecame clogged and stopped functioning. Partof the Library carpet was destroyed. Afterdisinfection, the affected area was re-carpeted— tied into the older carpet tiles at the ramps tothe stacks.

As an outstanding leader in higher education, President McMenamin was named aWoman of Excellence by the Union County Commission on the Status ofWomen. The Women of Excellence Award honors women who live or work inUnion County and who have made significant contributions in their respective field.

Dr. McMenamin was honored by the Executive Women of New Jersey at itsSalute to the Policy Makers 2012 Awards Dinner. She was among 36 NewJersey female executives to be recognized by EWNJ. Dr. McMenamin was the firstcounty college President to be honored in the 30 year history of the organization.

Synagogue Recognizes President McMenamin. Temple Beth O’r/Beth Torah ofClark recognized Dr. McMenamin for the College’s service to the community withthe L’Chaim to Life Award. Members of the Temple community are devoted to theprinciple of Tikun Olam “repairing the world” and choose their annual honoreesbased on this principle. Summary & Outlook

Looking forward begins with studentenrollment growth which isdependent on an array of factorsincluding population growth rate,unemployment rate, and the numberof high school graduates in UnionCounty and the surrounding areas.During FY 2012 student enrollmentdecreased 2.3%, and the Fall2012 enrollment has remained flatcompared to the preceding Fallsemester. Further, the College Tuitionand Fee credit hour rates for FY2013 will increase $3.00 (2.75%).

Management continues to placegreat emphasis on cost containmentto mitigate rising costs and tominimize tuition increases.Concerted efforts have been madeto utilize part time instructors wherefeasible to control instructionalspending. The institution hasrealized the benefits of this initiativein FY 2012 along with classconsolidation and higher utilizationof classroom capacity. This will bean ongoing process throughout FY 2013. On average, healthinsurance premiums will increase15% effective January 2013.However, it is expected that theState mandated increase inemployee premium cost sharingeffective July 1, 2012 will offset agood portion of this.

The College continues to maintainmost of its liquid assets in cash. Atfiscal year-end the cash position ofthe College is seasonally high toprepare for payment of continued operating expenses during themonths before the next significant influx of tuition and grantmonies. Interest rates on the cash position have decreasedsignificantly and we do not expect a turnaround during FY 2013.

Additional capital projects planned inFY 2013 include roadwayrealignment and reconfiguration on theCranford campus which will befunded by County Capital. Inaddition, the College is planning a32,600 square foot raisedconstruction building maintainingexisting parking underneath on theCranford campus. This expansion willallow for future growth and ongoingcapacity issues for Student Services.$8.5 million of “Chapter 12” will beutilized to fund this project. Any costsin excess of this amount will be fundedby the County of Union. It is theexpectation that part of this increasedfacility will be utilized to provideenhanced student services in areconfigured design that will provideimproved services to students. FY 2013 “Chapter 12” funds in theamount of $1.5 million will be used torebuild and renovate the Plainfieldcampus.

With ongoing cost considerationsparamount and continued supportfrom the State and County of Union,the College expects that it will be ableto continue to provide an affordable,high quality education to its students.With the plan for enhanced facilitiescoupled with the self-service tools thatthe new ERP system offers, the Collegewill continue to assure that the qualityand extent of services provided tostudents will meet their needs andexpectations.

October 16, 1933:Founding of “Union County JuniorCollege”, as an evening-onlyoperation housed in Abraham ClarkHigh School in Roselle. TheCollege’s first class consisted of243 students. The College was thefirst of six Emergency ReliefAdministration projects establishedin New Jersey during the first term ofPresident Franklin D. Roosevelt. Likethe projects conducted under theWPA (Works ProjectAdministration), these “emergencyjunior colleges” were created as arelief effort to provide jobs forunemployed teachers andprofessors. The prime mover in theestablishment of the College wasthen Union County Superintendentof Schools Arthur L. Johnson whosought to replace post-graduatecourses formerly taught by localschool districts.

1934: Dr. Hubert Banks Huntley becomesthe first chief administrator at UnionCounty Junior College and wasaddressed as Dean.

1935:Dr. Charles G.Cole, one of theoriginal faculty,succeededDean Huntley ashead of theCollege and

later came to be addressed as“President” of the College instead of Dean.

January 7, 1936:The College became anindependent, non profit institutiongoverned by a Board of Trusteescomposed of educational,professional, and business leadersin the community. At the 1936commencement, faculty woreacademic regalia for the first time.That year the College also changedits name to “Union Junior College”(UJC) in recognition of its appeal tostudents living beyond the geo -graphic boundaries of the county.

1940: Basketball was the only sport atUnion. The “girls’ squad” began atradition of victory. The ‘39/’40girls’ basketball squad captured firstplace in the “Powderpuff League.”This is the first championship for a UJC team.

September 1, 1941:The College rented a private houseat 227 East Third Street in Roselleand began operating as a collegeduring the day. The Collegecontinues to use the laboratories atAbraham Clark High School.

June 15, 1942:The College discontinued the use ofthe Third Street building in Roselleand began holding classes in whathad formerly been the Grant Schoolin Cranford and paid $500annually in rent to the CranfordBoard of Education. Over the years,the building acquired the nickname,“Old Lady of Holly Street.”

September 5, 1944:Responding to an influx of returningWWII veterans whose tuition waspaid by the federal government, theCollege created a Veterans StudyCenter and revised the academiccalendar to better serve veteransreturning at various times of theyear. The College replaced twosemesters with an academic yeardivided into four quarters.

1944:Dr. Cole issucceeded byDr. KennethCampbellMacKay, afaculty membersince 1935 and

then dean of the day school.

September 30, 1946:The College transfered its VeteransStudy Center to the more spaciousCleveland Elementary School.

November 17, 1948:For less than $56,000, the Boardof Trustees authorized the purchaseof 56 acres of farmland from theDreyer family in Cranford. Adecade later, this would becomethe home of the Cranford Campus.

July 1, 1949:Elizabeth General Hospital beganits affiliation with the College in thetraining of its nurses. Later, PerthAmboy General Hospital andMuhlenberg Hospital alsoparticipated in a partnership toprovide nursing students their pre-clinical course requirements. BothElizabeth General Hospital NursingSchool (now Trinitas School ofNursing) and Muhlenberg HospitalNursing School (now the JFKMedical Center Muhlenberg HaroldB. and Dorothy A. Snyder Schools)still operate cooperative programswith Union County College, wheregraduates receive their associatedegree from the College anddiploma in Nursing from therespective hospital affiliate.

October 16, 1958:In conjunction with the College’sSilver Anniversary year, aDevelopment Fund Campaign wasinitiated to raise $1 million neededto build a campus on theNomahegan tract. Faculty, alumni,corporations and community leadersjoined together in a fund drive thatwas an overwhelming success.

July 15, 1959:With the completion of theNomahegan Building, the Collegemoved to its 48 acre Campus inCranford. Construction continuedthroughout the 1960’s and 1970’sand the campus grew to a complexof seven buildings.

September 1, 1967:The word “Junior” was droppedand the College officially becomesknown simply as “Union College.”

1968:Dr. MacKaystepped down asPresident and wassucceeded by Dr. Kenneth W.Iversen whoserved until 1974.

August 5, 1970:College began holding classes inElizabeth at the Bayway CommunityCenter and the Elizabeth YMCA.Within five years, the Collegeopened an Employment SkillsCenter and the Institute for IntensiveEnglish addresses the growing needfor basic skills instruction, jobtraining, and English as a SecondLanguage Instruction.

September 2, 1970:The College began offering classes in Plainfield.

April 19, 1973The MacKay Library on theCranford Campus opened.

1974:Dr. Saul OrkinbecamePresident andserved until hisuntimely deathin 1983.

1977:The Women’s Basketball teamcontinued in their tradition asRegion XIX Basketball Championsand tally a string of 26 consecutivevictories.

February 17, 1981:Elizabeth classes move fromBayway and the YMCA to theThomas & Betts Building inElizabethport.

August 17, 1982:Union College is merged with whathad been formerly the County-runUnion County Technical Institute,which is located in what is nowknown as the Scotch PlainsCampus. From those talks, “UnionCounty College” was established.

1983: Dr. Derek N.Nunney isnamedPresident. He isthe firstpresident whowas not from

within the College’s faculty oradministration.

August 5, 1989:The College acquired the seven-story Elizabethtown Gas Companybuilding on West Jersey Street. OnSeptember 1, 1992, the buildingopened as the College’s Elizabethcampus. Named the LessnerBuilding Elizabeth Campus servesthe fourth largest city in New Jersey.

July 9,1990:Dr. Thomas H.Brown arrivedon campus andsucceeds Dr. Nunney.

February 17, 1991:The Cranford campus opened thestudent life building, now known asthe Victor M. Richel StudentCommons.

August 17, 1992:Plainfield classes are held in aCollege-owned and recentlyrenovated three-level, two storybuilding on East Second Street. Thebuilding had formerly served as theplant for the local newspaper, theCourier-News.

June 1, 1994:Renovation of the lower level of the MacKay Library at Cranford iscompleted to provide a state-of-the-art Visual Arts and CommunicationsCenter.

June 11, 1994:The College partnered with theUniversity of Medicine and Dentistryof New Jersey to open RegionalHealth Education Center in theHealth Technologies Building at theScotch Plains Campus, in order tooffer joint programs in the healthprofessions.

September 6, 1995:The College completed additions tothe Cranford Campus Center withan area called “The Pavilion.” This included the creation of aFitness Center and the ExecutiveEducation Center.

May 11, 1999:The Plainfield campus wasexpanded to include an annex thathoused instructional space forEmergency Medical Technician/Paramedic training and a state-of-the-art laboratory for American Sign Languages and Deaf Studies.

August 13, 2002:The Trinitas School of Nursingmoved to the Lessner Building fromits hospital-based setting.

2005, ‘06, ‘07, ‘09:The Men’s Soccer Team won thechampionship of the Garden StateAthletic Conference.

August 12, 2006:The renovation of the MacKayLibrary is completed. Work includedan expansion to add a third floor ofinstructional space.

June 30, 2007:The Union County CollegeFoundation concluded a highlysuccessful capital and endowmentcampaign, which raised more than$8 million dollars to support capitalconstruction and provide for studentscholarships.

2007:The Women’s Basketball team wasnamed the NJCAA Region XIXBasketball Champions. In additionthey won various championships in’79, ’81, ’82, ’86, ’87, ’88, ’89,’90, ’96, ’97, ’98, and 2003.

September 29, 2009:Through the generous funding andsupport from the Union CountyBoard of Chosen Freeholders, theCollege opened the $48 millionElizabeth I. Kellogg building onWest Jersey Street, just south of theLessner Building. The five-floor,132,000-square foot buildingfeatures the Kellogg Library, andCourt, Trinitas School of Nursing,and the Conference Center atUnion County College. The KelloggBuilding is equipped with state-ofthe-art classrooms, a lecture hall,and an information commons.

November 2009: The Men’s Soccer Team was the firstteam in the history of the College towin the National Junior CollegeAthletic Association (NJCAA)Division III, NationalChampionship.

February 22, 2010:New Jersey Department of HumanServices opened the “New JerseyHaitian Family Resource Center” inElizabeth, New Jersey in the lowerlevel of the Lessner Building inElizabeth. The Resource Centerprovided vital services for themembers of the Haitian communityaffected by the earthquake thatdevastated Port-au-Prince on January12. The City of Elizabeth is home toa large Haitian community and iseasily accessed via mass transit.

July 1,2010:Dr. Margaret M.McMenamin,the College’seighth and firstwoman

president, begins her tenure asPresident.

February 28, 2011:The Paralegal Studies Program,which offers an Associate inApplied Science degree and acertificate program, was grantedapproval by the American BarAssociation (ABA).

August 29, 2011:After Hurricane Irene came throughand destroyed so much of thetownship of Cranford, UnionCounty College students andemployees assisted members of thecommunity with cleaning out theirflooded homes. Local residentswere welcomed to the College tocharge their phones and otherelectronic devices, grab a warmshower, and a hot cup of coffee. Ittook more than a week for thepower to be restored aroundCranford.

September 24, 2011:Fire in the kitchen of the cafeteria onthe Plainfield campus rendered theAnnex building inoperable.

October 3, 2011:U.S. Senator Robert Menendezhelped Union County Collegestudents celebrate Hispanic HeritageMonth. Senator Menendez madehis inaugural visit to the College fora student sponsored event on theCranford campus.

2012:The Middle States Commission onHigher Education approved UnionCounty College’s Periodic ReviewReport by reaffirming the College’saccreditation and commending theinstitution for the quality of the reportand the process of the review.

October 29 2012:Union County College stayed trueto its “Fiat Lux” motto afterSuperstorm Sandy. Two days afterthe storm, the Elizabeth campusreopened, the next day Plainfieldopened. Eight days after Sandystruck Cranford students returned totheir home campus. During thisperiod, Cranford classes weremoved to another campus or to theonline course-management shell.
