Term 2 Week 1: Confusing Words ACTIVITIES Teaching Tips
quite quiet practise practice stationary stationery of off accept except advise advice affect effect bought brought loose lose aloud allowed
PRE-TEST Ask someone to give you a pre-test of this week's words. Mark your words and then highlight on the list the words you spelt incorrectly. These are the words you will be focusing on this week. Date:__________________
Confusing words can be challenging to spell as they often sound like other words. Knowing what part of speech the word is helps to work out which spelling is needed. For example, the word practise and practice are different parts of speech, one is a verb (practise) and the other is a noun (practice) and they have different spelling. Mnemonics can help with these differences. For example: The word practice ends in the little word ‘ice’. ‘Ice’ is a noun, so ‘practice’ is also a noun. ‘Practise’ has ‘is’ in it and ‘is’ is a verb.
WHAT PART OF SPEECH IS THAT? Using a dictionary sort each list word into the part of speech it belongs, for example, noun, adjective, verb etc. Date:__________________
WACKY WORDS On a page, write out your spelling words in different directions, filling up the whole page. Use different colours and types of writing for each word. Date: ________________________
