It may surprise you to learn that there are now 348 communi-ty shops trading in the UK – the South Stoke Community Shop (SSCS) is one of those. Takes A Break This Year

On the 15th September, the Committee made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event. The large number of those attending the event and the number of flaming torches have brought growing safety concerns for the organisers. Additionally, the ability to find sufficient people to help manage the event satisfactorily on an evening when many understandably want to be with their families, not to mention the issue of clearing up afterwards on Christmas Day, has become increasingly difficult.

In the statement from the Committee, it was said, “This is not a decision that has been taken lightly but the committee feels that the increasing safety risks now outweigh the benefits. Further details of next year's likely event are expected to be announced early next year.”

The Committee, in their announcement, also took the opportunity to thank all those who have helped to make the event the popular evening it has become.

Bell Ringing

We have a band of ringers coming from Pinner in Middlesex on Saturday 7th October. This band is certainly a first for us, they are coming by coach and although only approximately 18 of them are ringers, the rest of the party are supporters who are out on a day's jolly.

To this end the organizer has been in touch with the WI and they are providing tea in the Village Hall at 4.15pm, followed by ringing for an hour from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. Rights Of Way In South Stoke

Many of you may have noticed the three laminated signs that appeared stapled to various posts in and around the village at the end of July.

These emanated from Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) and related to acknowledged Rights of Way (RoW) for walkers in the Parish, on land owned by Christ Church College.

Several parishioners have complained to the Parish Council (PC) that there are some routes which are not shown. The PC has therefore consulted with OCC, and they have supplied information as to how we can make a claim – provided that we have the evidence – and maybe eventually have such one or more of these routes officially recognised as a RoW.

The three routes concerned are shown on the three maps below.

1. From The Street down to and along the river bank in two directions:

2. From the Bogey Hole (on the footpath to Little Stoke) to the Four Arches Viaduct across the river

3. From Ferry Road to the Recreation Ground

The first two routes shown above (1 & 2) are on Christ Church College land. What OCC needs, in order to be able to support any one of these claims, is evidence. This evidence can take two forms: Documentary evidence – such as from old maps,

inclosure awards, etc Witness evidence - from users who have used

the route for a number of years The Parish Council is therefore asking Parishioners, especially those who have lived in South Stoke for more than 20 years, if they can come forward and we can see if either one or more of these routes could support a claim. If you are able to do this, would you please pass your name, postal address, and email address or telephone number, to me – preferably by email – identifying which route you can vouch for, and the length of time you have lived in the village/parish. Any related photographs might also be of use. Additionally, if there are other routes or areas that you believe should be included in this effort to formally document and regularise the public rights of way, please let me know - again, with as much detail as you are able to provide. Please note, the process is quite lengthy and is likely to take 10 or more years to be finalised. We must, though, address these now so that the routes can be identified and the interest registered. It is important that we do this promptly as OCC has requested we comment. Thanks for your help.

Touring Goring

The South Stoke Historical Society enjoyed a two hour historical tour of Goring on Monday afternoon, 4 September in fine warm weather. The tour was ably led by Alan Winchcomb Chair of Goring Gap Local History Society. Starting at Goring Lock we processed past Goring Mill. Did you know the old post office sorting office by the bridge was built for Saunders as a showroom for his boats? We proceeded through Rectory Gardens and along the main street.

Now, where is this ? A school for Nonconformists right in the centre of Goring. Many of South Stoke’s villagers in the nineteenth century were Nonconformist and it is assumed their children walked to Goring for their education.

We went on to look at Goring’s Church School and the playground that was split in two by a brick wall to separate the boys from the girls. There are old school photos of South Stoke School showing the fence dividing the playground here.

There was so much of interest-The Catherine Wheel,The Temperance Hall, the many shop frontages that have become houses, the house where Oscar Wilde sojourned, through the churchyard and finally ending up at George Michael's former residence with plenty of points of interest in between.

Alan kept us fascinated with tales of houses, their occupants and any changes of use that we never seem to notice when we rush around on foot and in the car. A highly recommended walk for those who haven't yet taken the opportunity of Alan’s knowledge.

And that South Stoke School in Goring? The Beacon Flooring building next to the old HSBC Bank now Davis Tate.

Strictly Between Us

Strictly has started again, on the TV and in South Stoke Village Hall. A small group of us meet every Wednesday evening to learn a bit of ballroom dancing - waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, jive, rhumba, cha cha cha, etc. It may not be the same level as strictly but it is fun, really good exercise and you don’t need sequins.

We have all levels from beginners to proficient. We can take two or three more couples. Sadly we cannot cope with lone ladies though I am sure we could find partners for lone men. Cost is £6 or £7 per person depending on the number dancing.

If you are interested or want to know more, please contact me on 873342 or [email protected] or at 9 Chapel Close.

Raising money for a specific purpose gave us extra enthusiasm during the run up to Open Gardens this year. The added bonus of tours of the church tower provided extra interest on the day as well as inspiring the clock theme for the Flower Festival in St Andrews. Flower arrangements included ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’, ‘Time for tea’ and a display combining flowers with antique clock parts borrowed from Smith of Derby, the company that will be installing the new winder.

A wide ranging PR campaign succeeded in drawing visitors from as far afield as Beenham and Crowthorne as well as a photographer from the Henley Standard. We recognised many people from North Stoke, Woodcote and Goring and of course from South Stoke, including one or two long time locals who confessed to not having been before.

The success of the day very much depends on the weather and this year we were lucky. Two records were broken. Firstly, Monday 28th was the hottest August Bank Holiday since records began with temperatures of 28 degrees and secondly, with a grand total of £3342.50 we have surpassed previous years’ proceeds. This amount comprises entrance ticket sales, money from the Gardens & Homes booklet produced by the South Stoke Historical

Society, sales of Pimms at College Farm House, donations from plant sales, as well as from the Perch & Pike for their special Open Gardens Burger.

Adding this to donations already made gives us enough money to install the new winder and a little more. Following a suggestion by Reno Gatto and consultation with Smith of Derby we will now be able to enhance the clock further by

fitting a pendulum regulator and pendulum arrester unit. This will allow pin-point accuracy of the time keeping and automate the summer and winter settings.

At present the timekeeping is carried out at the same time as the manual clock winding. The extra work will bring the clock into the 21st Century and give future generations of villagers an accurate time check.

Thank you! To those who opened their gardens – Bright Ravens, Herons, The Ryepeck, Stoke Abbas, Plough Cottage, Church View, The Granary, College Farm House, Primrose Cottage, Ashmount Cottage and Fishponds; to the WI for providing teas and refreshments in an uncomfortably hot village hall; to the ticket sellers at the Lychgate and Recreation Ground and the car park attendants who managed to keep cars moving and motorists calm; to the South Stoke Historical Society for their Gardens & Homes booklet; to the Perch and Pike for their Open Gardens Burger idea and generosity; to all those involved in the Flower Festival; to the shop volunteers for keeping the shop open and ordering extra ice creams; to Erica for her plant stall and finally to George Druce and Robert Small for sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors to the church tower to see both the village clock and the bells.

Work on installing the clock winder will take place during October. There should be very little disruption to the running of the clock and it is expected to be chiming out over South Stoke with the new winder installed within less than two days.

Hickory Dickory Dock

In the rush to fit the images of the Flower Festival in last month’s South Stoke Parish Newsletter, this stunning flower arrangement by Janet Steel was inadvertently forgotten. (Apologies to Janet - it was an accidental oversight.)

“Hickory Dickory Dock” is truly a fitting arrangement for the theme of ‘time’ - and to the fundraising for the new clock winder. - Editor Photo thanks to David Shaw .

South Stoke Women’s Institute

The September Meeting of South Stoke WI was our Autumn Tea-party. This is usually held in the garden of one of our members but unfortunately the weather once again failed to co-operate - the Village Hall hosted the "Garden Party" instead.

Our President, Rita Mann, welcomed everyone and after giving out cards and small gifts to the members with birthdays this month, afternoon tea was served. September is a purely social occasion having time to chat to friends while wandering round a beautiful garden and hopefully enjoying the late Autumn sunshine. We were not able to that this year, perhaps better luck next: we are always optimistic. Cream tea and an assortment of cakes was provided and served by the President and Committee.

Autumn has well and truly arrived and thoughts are now turning to activities geared up to cooler months. For quilters and needle women, Denman College at Marcham near Abingdon, our own WI College is having a fabric sale in October. We have a Mayhem and Murder mystery evening as well as a Christmas Decoration workshop and a Christmas Munches and Bunches (a lunch and floral demonstration) - all of which are taking place in November. These are events organized by The County and are held at venues all around Oxfordshire. A wide assortment of courses are available to members as well as non-members at Denman College, these consist of day workshops as well as residential ones. This is a perfect opportunity to try something new or continue with something you are all ready interested in.

South Stoke WI meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 2.15pm in the Village Hall. Visitors are very welcome. We have a range of speakers on all subjects interspersed with social events taking place throughout the year. Why not come and see for yourself? Margaret Boorne

Outline Planning Application Ref: P17/S3206/O ‐ For Up To 5 Houses

The Parish Council has been asked to submit its views to South Oxfordshire District Council regarding the above application . It is for a site just a hundred yards or so up the Woodcote Road on the right, when travel-ling towards Woodcote - from the crossroad junction with Ferry Road and the B4009. Please see a picture of the site below.

As you can see the site is largely surrounded by mature trees and the PC - as well as considering this applica-tion - is seeking protection of these trees by way of a possible Tree Protection Order.

We understand that of the proposed 5 houses, three would be market value and two would be affordable.

If any Parishioner would like to express a view on this application, please submit it to SODC Planning via its website at: http://www.southoxon.gov.uk/ccm/support/Main.jsp?MODULE=ApplicationDetails&REF=P17/S3206/

You may also want to send your thoughts to the South Stoke Parish Council via our Councillor responsible for planning matters, Andrew Scrivener at: [email protected].

The PC will be considering our response to this applica-tion at our meeting on 16th October - starting at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

Now that the Scottish midge season is nearly over, Mr B and the garden manager have taken off for the western isles and some more stone hugging. Mr B has left the under-gardeners in charge of his piece for the newsletter so here are some gardening thoughts for October.

This is the best month to plant some of the great tasting spring vegetables. Top of the list will be overwintered broad beans. Based on years of trial and error, we believe that the best variety for our area is Aqua Dulce Claudia. The seeds should be planted directly into prepared soil about 10cm deep and 10cm apart. The seeds can be planted in rows or a square but the easiest way is to dig a shallow trench, drop the seeds in and cover it over. Broad beans are very frost hardy and don’t attract the pigeons but mice can be a problem. In this case the old adage is plant one for me, one to rot and one for the mice – unfortunately, if the mice find them ‘me’ and ‘the rot’ don’t get a look in.

Another good one to get going is garlic. It is important to plant an overwintering variety. What have worked well in South Stoke are the soft-neck varieties like Early Purple Wight and Vallelado Wight. No special soil prep is necessary: break the head into separate cloves, poke a hole in the soil about 5cm deep, drop a clove in root-end down and cover loosely. Garlic needs frost to arrest early growth in December and January but then sprints away in February and March so that you are harvesting in late April or early May.

While you are so busy with the garlic and beans why not consider overwintered onions and shallots. The white onion Radar is ideal, cropping well and 6 weeks before the spring sown seeds or sets. In autumn, you will need to plant ‘sets’ (these are small immature onions) but don’t plant too many as they are not ‘keepers’ beyond August. For shallots, try Golden Gourmet. Like garlic, shallots are sold as bulbs that you have to break into pieces for planting (albeit they are larger and less of them per bulb than the cloves in a garlic bulb). Onions and shallots benefit from a rich seed bed so if you have compost or manure available work that into the seed bed a couple of weeks before planting.

Seeds and sets for all the above can be bought from the national seedsmen like Dobies and Suttons but I get mine from Richard in Wallingford market at a much lower cost.

Goring and Woodcote Medical Practice PPG Open Meeting

4 November from 11.00am-12.30pm Obesity and Self-Care

Please make a note in your diaries for our next PPG Open Meeting which will take place in the Goring Village Hall on 4 November from 1100-1230. The topic for this meeting is “Obesity and Self-Care”. We will have talks by Dr Andy Goode, the Practice lead for obesity and Mr Greg Jones a Bariatric Consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. In addition, as usual, we will have a number of information tables covering many aspects of the subject. Everyone is welcome and we do hope you will be able to attend.

Many thanks.

Jeremy Hutchins Chairman, Goring & Woodcote Medical Practice PPG [email protected]

In September I shared, via social media, news of a £40m investment in our coastal communities. It will help create jobs and increase visitors, so our coastal towns and villages thrive. I was surprised to receive comment back suggesting that, given that Oxfordshire is land locked and about as far from the coast as you can get in England, it was irrelevant to the constituency. I was surprised, yes – and also saddened. Are we really only interested in our own back yard? Can we not appreciate the benefit to others, and also to ourselves as visitors to our coastal towns? Thankfully I know from other communications that many people do look and think more widely, but this made me think about how we can so easily become focused on the things that affect us that it can be difficult to see things from an alternative perspective.

I regularly receive communications from people who feel strongly about an issue lobbying me to act or vote in a certain way. On most issues I receive communications on both sides of the argument with people feeling equally strongly both for and against something and each side urging me to support their view. Of course, it is impossible for me to support both so I have to do my research and come to my own conclusion. When I come to a particular view I try to set out my rationale so that even where people do not agree with me they can see where I have come from. I have had some very interesting and informative exchanges with people. It is good to learn and understand, even when we do not agree. However at times there is less graciousness in disagreement.

In Parliament, the weekly Prime Minister’s Question time can be confrontational. It is one of my least favourite sessions of the week and certainly does not represent the way in which Parliament usually works. In other debates members are respectful of one another in sharing opposing views. In our changing and complex world understanding and mutual respect are important. Where this fails we too often see abuse, unrest, and violence or terrorism.

I welcome communications from constituents sharing views and ideas. We may not always agree but it is good to have the debate and learn from one another. I also produce a periodic electronic newsletter and briefings on specific issues which can spark debate.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Oxfordshire County Council’s DIY 1, 2, 3 For Free Scheme Changing

After a recent review by the Oxfordshire County Council (OCC), it was decided to maintain the current number of recycling locations throughout the County. This was a welcome decision, as there were concerns raised by the South Stoke Parish Council and local residents that the local centre should be maintained. There will be a change, though, to the costs for DIY waste items.

The current scheme which has been running at the Household Waste Recycling Centres for 15 years allowed residents to deposit up to three DIY waste items for free before being charged a small fee of £1 for each additional item.

From the 1st October 2017 this changes to a small fixed fee per item of £1.50 for most non-household or DIY items. A full list of items and each cost is available at the OCC website page: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/content/charges-non-household-waste

Residents can still deposit household waste for free at their local Household Waste Recycling Centre (for all HWRC locations, please see https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/public-site/household-waste-recycling-centres).

But what makes us different is our deep knowledge of garden plants - where to plant them, how to grow them successfully and what maintenance they need.

Update: New Primary School In Goring Extraordinary Goring Parish Council Meeting

Approximately 160 people filled Goring Village Hall on 13th September to debate the issue of whether the offer of a new primary school for Goring, paid for by a developer of one of the proposed sites, should be included in the current Neighbourhood Plan.

After an extended Public Forum, presentations from Coun-cillors and School Governors, and Q&A sessions, the Council passed unanimously two motions.

1. That the council agree to support the school to work through the process to get the best school facilities for Goring, and to provide a link Councillor and a standing agenda item to monitor progress.

2. That the Council deal with the school’s proposals as a strategic project in the Neighbourhood Plan but to not de-lay the current Neighbourhood Plan process.
