LEARN TO SWIMLIFESAVING SOCIETY SWIM PROGRAMNever too young to learn, Never too old to start.

The Lifesaving Society is dedicated to creating Water Smart ® kids. Water Smart ® kids know how to swim and behave safely in and around the water. The Lifesaving Society’s Swim Program makes sure that your children are Water Smart ® before they get in too deep. It is a complete program from Parent and Tot through to Leadership and is stroke and skill driven. The program is designed to make learning fun. Cannonballs, handstands, and somersaults are not only allowed, but are actually encouraged as part of the learning process.

Parent and Tot Levels (3 months to 3 years)Parent & Tot 1 3 to 12 months old and ready to enjoy the water with a parentParent & Tot 2 12 to 24 months old and ready to enjoy the water with a parentParent & Tot 3 2 to 3 years old and ready to enjoy the water with a parent

Preschool Levels (3 to 5 years)Preschool A 3 to 5 years and just starting out on his or her own, parents are welcome to participate until their child lets them

know they can do it themselvesPreschool B Able to get in and out of the water without assistance, jump into shallow water, float and glide in a P.F.D. on front

and back, get face wet, and blow bubblesPreschool C Able to get in and out of the water without assistance, jump into shallow water, submerge and exhale under water,

and move through water on front and back with buoyant aidPreschool D Able to jump into chest deep water wearing a PFD, recover objects from the bottom, and move through water on

front and back while wearing a PFDPreschool E Able to support self at surface, swim 5-10 m on front and back and is introduced to whip kick. If a 5 year old

completes Preschool E, they advance to Swimmer 2

Swimmer Levels (6 to 12 years)Swimmer 1 6 to 12 years of age and just starting outSwimmer 2 Able to jump into water with/without a PFD, open eyes and exhale under water, get objects off the bottom, and float

and move through the water on front and backSwimmer 3 Able to jump into deeper water, fall sideways into water wearing a PFD, support self at the surface without an aid,

do whip kick, and swim 10-15 m on front and backSwimmer 4 Able to do cannon balls, dives and rolls into deep water, can tread water, swim under water, swim front and back

crawl, and can do endurance swims of 25-50 mSwimmer 5 Able to do dives and stride entries, eggbeater kick, foot first surface dives, front and back crawl, whip kick, breast

stroke arms with breathing, and endurance swims of 50-100 mSwimmer 6 Able to do shallow dives, eggbeater kick, foot first sculling, surface dives, front and back crawl and breaststroke

over 50 m, sprint 25 m, and endurance swims of 100-200 mCONTINUOUS EVALUATIONWith the LifeSaving Society program the instructors are continuously evaluating the participant. As they progress from level to level the Instructor begins to work on the next level immediately. On the last class a progress memo is distributed to each student to outline their accomplishments and indicate what level to register them in next time.

WE EMPHASIZE ACHIEVEMENTParents, during each and every session your child is enrolled in lessons, he or she is learning, experiencing and achieving! During the lessons some children will progress to the next level and others will continue to work at the same level. At the end of a session, if your child does not move to the next level, please don’t consider it a failure. Unfortunately some participants become extremely stressed on the last day while waiting for a pass or fail. As instructors we work hard to reduce this stress by using continuous evaluation and by emphasizing achievements. With the standards required with the LifeSaving Program it is quite probable that candidates will remain in each level, learning and excelling, for many sessions.

Rookie Patrol - Swimmers continue stroke development with 50m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breasstroke; lifesaving sport skills include a 25m obstacle swim and 15m object carry. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS & treatment for bleeding.

Ranger Patrol - Swimmers develop better strokes over 75m swims of each stroke. They tackle Lifesaving Sportskills in a lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock & obstructed airway procedures.

Star Patrol - Swimmers are challenged with 600m workouts, 300m timed swims and a 25m object carry. Strokes are refined over 100m swims. First aid focuses on treatment of bone, joint injuries & respiratory emergencies including asthma & lergic reactions. Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victims removals & rolling over & supporting a victim face up in shallow water.
