30 Years of Adult Education at Clane Community SchoolAs chairman of the National Association of Adult and Community Education Directors (NACED) Iam delighted to join with others in congratulating Clane Community School on reaching the mile-stone of three decades of Adult Education provision. Congratulations on30 Years of Adult Education

1983-2013Padraig Nolan, Principal Scoil Mhuire

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Adult Education team on its 30thbirthday. I wonder when night classes started in Scoil Mhuire 30 years ago, was it envis-aged how big the night school could become. Adult education in the widestsense is any form of learning adults engage in beyond traditionalschooling and with over 250 courses on offer, Scoil Mhuire ticksall the boxes. When I am asked where I work and I reply ScoilMhuire Community School, Clane, the response invariably is,“I did a night class there.” I have sampled the night classesmyself. My experience has been very positive and construc-tive. All classes are well organised with very enthusiastictutors. I look forward to doing more classes when time per-mits.The day school has benefitted greatly from the night classes. Weare fortunate that adult education provides funding for some schoolprojects, the most recent being the extension to the school assembly. The adult education team is ably led by Seamus Scully, the Director. He along with histeam are responsible for the enormous growth in night classes over the last 30 years. Welldone on reaching the milestone of 30 years and long may adult education continue andprosper in Scoil Mhuire Community School.

CongratulationsMr Ciarán Cannon, T.D., Minister for Training and Skills

I am delighted to have the opportunity to extend my congratulations to Scoil Mhuíre,Clane, on their 30 years of adult education provision and on the launch of this commemo-rative book to mark this wonderful achievement.Adult education provision in Scoil Mhuíre has grown at a tremendous pace over the pastthirty years and has established itself as one of the largest providers of adult education notalone in Kildare but in Ireland catering for nearly 1800 adult learners. There are currentlyover two hundred and fifty courses being provided as part of the Winter schedule. Thedemand from learners has seen the adult education programme extended from the tradi-tional evening classes to include daytime provision also. The School also works in con-junction with many of the key accreditation and professional bodies both national andinternational including with the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Serving the local community in Clane and the surrounding counties, Scoil Mhuíre offers avast range of adult education programmes both accredited and non-accredited, that helplearners of all ages in furthering their education, improving skills or in learning a newhobby. This is vitally important in creating the lifelong learning ethos that is essential forus all to engage fully in a more demanding world be it in our local community or in theworkplace. In my role as Minister for Training and Skills, I am very aware of the importance of adulteducation provision and am working to ensure the sector is supported as much as possible.I see the benefits that engaging in lifelong learning brings to people’s lives whether for per-sonal development or for up-skilling to enhance employment prospects. This year has seen two significant developments in the Further Education and TrainingSector with the establishment of the Education and Training Boards and SOLAS. This willhelp us develop our further education and training sector by providing a clear direction forthe future. I commend the tremendous work carried out by the School’s Adult Education Departmentincluding management, administrators and tutors in developing and expanding the range ofcourses available. The learners in this locality are very fortunate to have such a committedadult education service providing so many learning options on their doorstep. I would urgeall adults to engage in lifelong learning and to encourage others in your family and com-munity to take part too.Well done to everyone who has contributed in any way over the last thirty years to the suc-cess of Clane Adult Education Centre

Beginning of Adult Education in ClaneSr. Dominica, former Principal of Scoil Mhuire

Holding classes for evening students began in Clane around the late ‘70s. My memory isthat some students were doing Mathematics for the Leaving Certificate which they did in5th year and then went on to do the Leaving Certificate in the following year with theMathematics subject off the agenda for the final year and therefore a lesser burden of studyin the examination year. After a few years that opportunity was removed when it was nec-essary to complete the exam in one sitting. Other classes being held were in the Health areaand known as the Billings method of family planning which had been recently heard of inIreland and of great help for family life.Classes were also given to students who wished to qualify for an Apprenticeship and need-ed English and Mathematics at Intermediate Certificate level. There was also a start madeon Literacy Classes for people from outside the Clane area. To the best of my memory itwas at that stage that Noel Dalton from Kildare VEC with expertise in Adult EducationClasses in the VEC came to visit the school. He was most helpful with preparations for thestart of a more formal Adult Education Programme in the proposed new Communityschool. Adult Education was a recognised part of the programme in Community Schools and therewas a special Post of Responsibility for the organisation and running of the AdultEducation element of the School. Kieran Rigney RIP was appointed to the Post and beganthe more formal night classes in 1983. During that time the Classes were advertised as anadd-on in the newspaper advertisement for Naas VEC.One of the great attractions in the night classes was the possibility of classes in Computerswhich were new at the time. Eventually we upgraded the computer stock when the LeavingCertificate Technical Drawing classes included work on a New Module called AutoCad.Some of the fifth year students who went on Work Experience in areas where staffs weretrying to grapple with AutoCad asked the school to put on classes for staff members whowere given time off from work to attend the school for classes in Autocad.Great credit is due to Breda Dowling for her tremendous work in getting the AdultEducation programme typed and organised, dealing with phone calls and passing informa-tion back and forth all added to her already heavy load as secretary and financial Officerin the Day School.

Adult EducationPast, Present and Future

Seamus Scully, Director of Adult Education

“Learning is not a product of schooling, but the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” (AlbertEinstein, Physicist and Nobel Laureate, 1879 – 1955). There are over 3,000 learners annu-ally participating in adult education courses at Scoil Mhuire Community School, Clane.Where do they come from? Why do so many people come to our Adult Education class-es? Who participates in our courses?People come to Scoil Mhuire, Clane, from local communities and further beyond, includ-ing Dublin, Meath, Carlow, Laois and Offaly. Our programme affords learners the oppor-tunity to learn and acquire new skills, re-enter the employment market, progress theircareers and to have an enjoyable social evening every week.We pride ourselves on making our programme varied, flex-ible and attractive to all participants. In addition, newcourses, developing trends and courses to increaseemployment opportunities are considered in all of ourprogrammes. We are aware of the present economic situation andwe want to give those who take part in our coursesvalue for money. Many of the courses we offer aregeared towards future employment opportunities. Byproviding courses certified by NUI Maynooth, ITEC,FETAC, COMPTIA, ECDL, to name but a few, learnersare given a stepping stone into a different world, a worldfull of enjoyable learning and exciting career paths. We areparticularly pleased with the increase in the number of male learners who have joined cer-tified courses in I.T. such as Comptia A+ and Autodesk Revit, which lead directly toemployment opportunities. How did Scoil Mhuire Adult Education begin? Who was involved? The beginning goesback further than the 30 years, before Scoil Mhuire Community School, Clane was built. It started with individuals who were clearly devoted to further education and lifelong learn-ing and wanted to offer such opportunities to local adults, through evening classes. Sr.Dominica, along with Noel Dalton, spearheaded the development. Moving to ScoilMhuire, Clane in 1983, Bryan Sammon, Deputy Principal and Breda Dowling, school sec-retary became part of the Adult Education team. Kieran Rigney, Martha Daly, PádraigCarbury and Seamus Scully continued the work of these pioneers in adult education serv-ices in Clane. From 1983 to 2013, the programme and the brochure, from very small beginnings, havedeveloped into a comprehensive and iconic booklet of over 250 courses to choose from. There is such a wide range of options on offer, that everything from canine obedienceclasses to cognitive behavioural therapy are catered for. Each category shows obvious pro-gression, with new courses being constantly introduced. What started as pastime classesin many cases, have developed into certified programmes. At all times, we’re conscious of the necessity to provide a comfortable and an enjoyableatmosphere for our learners, they should feel like it’s a social night out. The school itself, our staff and class structure all aim to maintain this standard. The continued commitmentand dedication of all the staff involved and the huge support from our principal, PádraigNolan, and former principal, Sr. Dominica, Sr. Colette McCluskey and the Board ofManagement have helped the growth of Adult Education in Scoil Mhuire, Clane.Do we cater for everyone in the community? Do we entice people who are away fromlearning for a long time to come through our doors? Do we lay out a career path for thosewho want a second chance at education? Parents at home with their children may wish totake an Adult Education course but can’t because of family commitments. To be totallyinclusive, we are currently investigating the possibility of a pre-school and child-mindingfacility. Many of our certified courses are daytime classes, which could be the beginningof a career path for those who would wish to have one and wouldn’t have the opportunityotherwise. We are very conscious of welcoming everyone to partake in our courses, daytime andevening time. The range of courses we offer for adults during the day has expanded eachyear. Consequently, a really positive trend has been the increase of adults taking daytimeclasses with us. Another consideration for the future will have to be extending our facili-ties for these growing numbers. There is a need for advice, consultation and support forlearners as regards career guidance. We would like to enhance our services in this area inthe future. “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keepslearning stays young” – (Henry Ford).
