DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS

MileHighEarlyLearning(MHEL)hasbeenclosingtheachievementgapforDenver’smostunder-resourcedchildrenforalmost50years.Ourworkhasevolvedtomeetthechangingneedsofourcommunity,andwecontinuetobuildandshapeprogramsthathelpour youngchildrenthrive,andprovidetheircaregivers,parents,andteachersthetoolsandsupporttheyneedtodotheirimportantjobswell.Weareproudtosharethreeachievementsfrom2019thatexemplifyMHEL’smission.

• Engaging Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) Caregivers and Parents.ThroughBabiesReadyforCollegeanditssuiteofprograms–Play&LearnGroupsandShort&Sweet BookClubs—weserved641FFNcaregivers,parents,andchildren.Evaluationsconfirmthattheprogramiscreatingdeep,life-changingimpact.Participants’knowledgeoftargetedchilddevelopmenttopicsisincreasing,andtheyreportedgainingknowledgeandfeelingmoreconfidentintheirparenting.Thesefindingsweresupportedbyresultsfrom theCaregiverKnowledgeSurvey,withscoresincreasingfrompre-topost-program.ParentingStressIndexdataalsoshowasignificantdecreaseincaregivers’stressfrom pre-topost-programfromparticipationinjust10-12weeks.

• Increasing our footprint to serve more infants and toddlers.Thispastyear,MHELwasawardedasecondgranttoexpandoursuccessfulEarlyHeadStartprogramandservemoreyoungchildrenbirthtoage3years.Since2000,MHELhaspartneredwithotheragencies toofferEarlyHeadStartatitsearlylearningcenters.MHELreceivedourfirstEarlyHeadStartgrantin2017andbeganofferingprogrammingatmoreofourcentersandtochildcarepartnersites.Withthe2019expansiongrant,nowMHELserves140EarlyHeadStartchildrenthroughourexpandednetworkofpartners.

• Equipping teachers with the skills to support children with challenging behaviors. MHELlaunchedtheInclusivePracticesinEarlyChildhoodCredential—an8-credit,120-hourcredentialinpartnershipwithUniversityofColoradoDenverthatprovidesearlychildhoodeducatorswiththefoundationalknowledgeandskillstosuccessfullyworkwithchildrenwhohavechallengingbehaviorsandspecialneeds.Thecatalystforthistrainingprogramwasfeedbackfromearlychildhoodeducatorswhodesiredmoretrainingonhowtobestsupportchildren’ssocialandemotionaldevelopment.EighteenparticipantsfromMHELandcommunityearlylearningprofessionalsparticipatedinthefirstcohortoftraining.
