Snapshot

Carbondale is located in Jackson County, Illinois within the Southern Illinois region known as “Little Egypt.” With a 2015 population of 26,192, it is the largest city in Southern Illinois outside of the St. Louis Metro-East region. The Carbondale-Marion Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), comprised of Jackson and Williamson County, has a population of 126,430. Home to Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), Carbondale is the economic center of Southern Illinois. The university has a total of 17,292 full and part-time students, and a total of 5,917 employees with an annual payroll of over $293 million. In addition, SIUC is ranked among the top 5% of all research universities in the US. Carbondale is also home Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) and its flagship healthcare facility, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale (MHC). Together, SIH and MHC employ 3,700 people system-wide, contributing $266 million in salaries to the region. The Carbondale-Marion MSA has an annual GDP of $5.2 billion and unemployment rate of 4.3%, just under the national average. Carbondale and Jackson County have an unemployment rate of 3.6%. The nearby counties of Franklin, Perry, Union, and Williamson are designated Labor Surplus Areas by the U.S. Department of Labor. This represents a potential labor supply and opportunity for businesses with federal contracts. Carbondale is also home to an educated labor force with 48% of the population over the age of 25 holding either a bachelor’s or graduate degree. The median household income in Carbondale is $17,764 and the mean is $37,640. The per capita income is $15,177. Because Carbondale is a university community with a large student population, this data can be misleading. The median family income is $40,092 and the mean is $65,148. This is still below the Illinois median household income of $57,574. However, the cost of living in Carbondale is less than the rest of the state. The “living” annual income before taxes for one working adult in Carbondale is $20,947 versus $24,384 for the state. Situated on U.S. Route 51 and Illinois Route 13, Carbondale has access to I-57, I-24, I-64, and I-55. St. Louis, MO located 104 miles northwest has an approximate travel time of 2 hours; Nashville, TN located 203 miles southeast has an approximate travel time of 3 hours; and Chicago, IL located 332 miles north has an approximate travel time of 5 hours. In addition, the Carbondale Amtrak Station provides train service to Chicago, IL to the north and New Orleans, LA to the south.
