Birds of the Port Wakefield Area

from a book of the same name by Paul Taylor and Wikipedia White-Fronted Chat epthianura albifrons

A species of honeyeater. Fairly common in open areas, particularly samphire flats and coastal vegetation. It is endemic to Australia, being found across southern Australia (including Tasmania). Threatened in the Adelaide-Mount Lofty region of South Australia, where it has become much rarer.

Adult white-fronted chats are 11–13 cm in length and weigh 13 g. The male has a white face and breast bordered by a black band across the breast and back. The upperparts are grey, and wings and tail are brown, and abdomen is white. The eyes are white, whereas the eyes of the female are brown. The female has brown upperparts and white underparts with a faint darker breast band.

The call, a tang sound, has been likened to the twanging of a rubber band.

Guess Who? Well known local motor racing enthusiast, together with his mates (no women), recently attended a race meet in Victoria choosing to camp out in swags (too stingy to pay for a cabin). Feeling a bit cold in the evening at camp they decided to light a fire to warm up. But nothing to start the fire with other than a lighter. Realising that one had a generator in the back of his ute they came up with the idea to use some petrol. But, alas! Nothing to get the petrol out with. “I know” stated one bloke, “I have a dirty pair of undies, we can soak some petrol up with those and burn them”. A successful idea. Next morning, came a disappointment. The undies burned were the clean ones, grabbed by mistake.

Senior-Safety Cap In 2008, a man is his mid-fifties had to be rushed to hospital, having made his eye bleed while trying to open a bottle of pills. He was attempting to unscrew the child-safety cap from a container of anti-inflammatory drugs, which he was taking for his arthritis, but he struggled so much that his hand flew backwards and punched him hard in the face. To add insult to injury, the nurses at the hospital then enquired if it was his wife who had hit him and offered to alert a social worker. At that point, he knew he had to give up. ‘If I didn’t feel old before the incident,’ he was quoted as saying, ‘I did afterwards. Very, very old. Washed up, embarrassed, absolutely past it!’
