Page 1 Community News Summer 2019 community: noun pl. -·ties This newsletter aims to connect the community based around Dorking URC. Meeting that objective raises the inevitable question – who makes up that community? That is a question this edition hopefully goes some way towards answering. A search of online dictionaries reveals at least eight varying meanings for the word community, all relating to people (or other living organisms) and their interconnectivity. Their relationships and things like shared interests, traditions, values, ownership, and by association the location that all takes place in. i So, if people are central to community, introducing the groups of people that make up the community gathered around Dorking URC seems a good way to fill these pages, and the thirty five or so events and activities on the following pages cover those that regularly meet at Dorking URC and have chosen to be included. They represent a varied and vibrant community of well over 1000 people of all ages coming onto the premises each week, including hirers and independent charities supported by DURC, alongside activities and groups organised or sponsored by the church itself, which can be identified by the DURC logo. They are a bit like pieces in a jigsaw – very different but connected. With the DURC community introduced over the following pages, we would love to fill future editions (which we hope to produce three times a year) with highlights of recent events and any forthcoming activities, so please do share your news and plans using the contact details below. People and relationships might be central to communities, but premises and facilities play a huge part in allowing them to thrive safely and comfortably. Dorking URC has inherited a wonderful legacy of buildings, a harvest of generations of Christian witness in the town. They require a huge amount of work to maintain, and improve, something the church community continually strives to do. The current ‘Project Umbrella’ building works are part of that ongoing process. They will inevitably cause some disruption, but these repairs and improvements are seeking to ensure the buildings remain a blessing to all who use them, and most importantly, a well from which Jesus’ love will continue to flow out into the town for generations to come. If you would like to know more about the project, and ways you might help with it – or indeed any other aspect of Dorking URC’s work please don’t hesitate to ask and do check out the DURC website and Facebook pages for updates and other information. This newsletter aims to connect the community based around Dorking URC. Meeting that objective raises the inevitable question – who makes up that community? That is a question this edition hopefully goes some way towards answering. A search of online dictionaries reveals at least eight varying meanings for the word community, all relating to people (or other living organisms) and their interconnectivity. Their relationships and things like shared interests, traditions, values, ownership, and by association the location that all takes place in. i

So, if people are central to community, introducing the groups of people that make up the community gathered around Dorking URC seems a good way to fill these pages, and the thirty five or so events and activities on the following pages cover those that regularly meet at Dorking URC and have chosen to be included.

Charities

Dorking URC supports charities in a variety of ways including: Overseas Mission Projects (BMK School, Uganda, Lady Nye School India); Toilet Twinning; Shoebox Appeals and Christian Aid.

Charity Coffee Mornings are opportunities for any member of the DURC community to host an event in aid of a cause of their choice.

Dorking URC also collects and uses food that would otherwise be wasted through the Fareshare scheme, something that has also help raise money for various charities. The church is a collection point for the local Foodbank, a distributor of Foodbank vouchers and can provide School Holiday Boost Bags for anyone who might need a little help when school meals stop during the holidays. Contact [email protected] for details.

Room every Thursday evening as our studio to record the Dorking Advertiser onto memory sticks that are sent out to blind and partially sighted people free of charge. At about 6.00pm a recorder and 3 readers arrive to read extracts from that week’s paper, prepared earlier by 2 editors. At 8.00pm two

duplicators arrive to make copies onto memory sticks to be posted to each listener. The service is always happy to accept more listeners, it is free and provides playback machines.

A rota of nearly 50 volunteers means people are on duty about once every 6 weeks and more help is always welcome. The age range of volunteers is great and includes young people reading as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award work. Our oldest volunteer will be 90 in August.
