but generally he does not seek higher office, he just does what is asked of him and takes on any job that is needed. He also served for many years as a Councillor, for the Deloraine Municipality and then, after amalgamation, the Meander Valley Municipality. With Pat he has always opened their homes, first Arcoona and now Glendalough, to community organisations for fundraising events and celebrations. Over the years a huge amount of money has been raised for many different charities and causes. Geoff’s most recent example of outstanding community service has been the Malua Memorial - an undertaking of colossal proportions. Geoff believed strongly that the story of the Australian champion racehorse and Melbourne Cup winner Malua, born and bred at Calstock, Deloraine, was an important part of Deloraine’s history and that it should be preserved and publicised. He also saw it as an opportunity to provide a tourist attraction that would help to promote Deloraine. So he set out on the mammoth task of getting support, raising the funds, designing the memorial, writing the book and organising the production of the statue and the construction of the memorial. The optimism, dedication and perseverance with which he approached and carried out this difficult project is representative of the manner in which he has approached all the varied facets of his life.

During a game, the coach asked one of his young players: "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?"

The little boy nodded yes.

"Do you understand that what matters is winning together as a team?"

The little boy nodded yes.

"So," the coach continued, "when a strike is called, or you are out at first, you don't argue or curse or attack the umpire. Do you understand all that?"

Again, the boy nodded yes.

"Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain it to your mother."

At last weeks’ meeting we celebrated the 55th Anniversary of our Charter. Speaker for the evening was Past Rotarian and PP Don Howe (Don was a Rotarian for 25 years). Don recounted to us some of the projects that have been undertaken, of some of his memorable times in Rotary. The fact of getting back to basics, and that all Rotarians should at least once read “The Manual of Procedure”.

Don recounted the building of the Pontoon, and its many uses in the river when first constructed.

He talked about the first Craft Fair and that there were only 34 Stalls, and that the stalls were constructed of wood.

In 1984 Rotary started the clearing of the riverbank, and the construction of the walking track. Deloraine Rotary’s first project was the Swimming Pool. The fountain by the Library was constructed and installed by Deloraine Rotary.

PP Don was thanked for sharing his past experiences of Rotary with us, and in doing so it was pointed out that Don and Janny received an Exceptional Award for services to the community, during this years’ Australia Day presentations. Congratulations and well done Don and Janny.

GEOFFREY WOODS

Geoff, the only son of Ben and Monnie Woods, was born in 1939, in Deloraine at Arcoona Hospital. He attended Our Lady of Mercy School, St Virgil’s College in Hobart and the University of Tasmania. His teaching career took him to many parts of Tasmania but he was always loyal to, and a true son of, Deloraine. He returned to live in his home town when he and Pat bought Arcoona in the 1970’s.

Geoff has made a major contribution to the community of Tasmania and in particular the community of Deloraine and has been recognised by being awarded the Order of Australia, Meander Valley Citizen of the Year 1999 and Life Membership of the Deloraine Band, the Deloraine Dramatic Society and the Deloraine Jazz Club.

Geoff had a distinguished career in the Education Department teaching in sixteen different Primary and Secondary schools and being recognised as an inspirational, dedicated educationist. He was principal of Meander, Derby, Ross, Margate, Natone and Mole Creek Schools. In all of these he became an integral part of the local community coaching tennis and football, and organising interstate excursions.

At Mole Creek he founded the newspaper Western Tiers which contributed significant funds to the school and gave the community of Mole Creek and the Deloraine Municipality a vehicle for the expression of ideas and opinions, promotion of community events and a focus for pride and community spirit. Through Western Tiers, Geoff was able to promote the work of community organisations including of course Rotary and particularly the early days of the Craft Fair. All the issues of Western Tiers and the thousands and thousands of photographs produced during the 23 years of Western Tiers, now form a valuable historical record of that time.

Geoff was also for many years a member of the State Executive of the Tasmanian Teachers’ Federation.

In sport Geoff played football for Deloraine, New Town, Glenorchy, Rosebery and Derby. He was also a golfer, and led the major restoration of the tennis courts and clubs at Deloraine and Derby when each of these had fallen into disrepair.

The study and writing of History and preservation of our Heritage have been lifelong imperatives. With Pat he restored Arcoona and wrote its history. Together they resurrected the Deloraine Group of the National Trust and have been Chairman and Secretary of it and also the Deloraine Historical Society for most of the past 30 years. This work also extended to involvement with the Management Committee of the Deloraine and Districts Folk Museum which is now part of the Deloraine Visitor Information Centre.

With the late Gordon Scott and the late Carl Sherriff Geoff formed the present Deloraine Band. He worked tirelessly to ensure that young people in Deloraine had the chance to learn and participate in music, applying for grants and facilitating the organisation of tutoring, purchase of instruments and uniforms. Geoff also formed the Deloraine Jazz Club and has been president of it for most of its life. For many years, Geoff was the Tasmanian Jazz Co-ordinator and continues to do the work voluntarily providing information through his web page TASJAZZ. His participation in the activities of the Deloraine Dramatic Society goes back to the very first Youth Drama Festival in 1954 in which he acted and produced a play and has continued right up to the present day. Geoff has always been a worker for community organisations serving in Apex in Deloraine and Devonport, Lions in Kingborough and Campbell Town and the Rotary Club of Deloraine. He served as District Governor in Apex and on the board of Rotary

Festival in 1980, and has organised the festival for most of its thirty year history, for which she was made a Life Member of the Society. For ten years she has been Secretary of the Launceston Robert Burns Society, the only one in Tasmania federated with the centre in Scotland.

Pat was a committee member of the Deloraine Band for many years, actively organising many fundraising events to ensure the continuation of music education in our area.

Pat is a founding member, Secretary and Life Member of the Deloraine Jazz Club, which particularly promotes the development of young musicians. Pat also helped to establish Irish dancing classes in Deloraine and participated for a number of years.

Pat is a founding member of the current Deloraine Group of the National Trust, and the Deloraine Historical Society, serving as Secretary for many years and also as Chairperson. She has been responsible for the classification and saving of several important buildings in the Deloraine area including the Power Station, Scotts Cottage and the Racecourse.

Pat has at various times over the years been a member of the State Council of National Trust. She has been a member of the Education Committee, and has been Chairperson of the Northern Regional Committee. She was appointed to the position of Chairperson of the Northern Region of National Trust at another period and then in November 2003 she was elected with an overwhelming majority to become State President. She has been made a Life Member of the National Trust. Currently she is Secretary of the Heritage Protection Society of Tasmania and the Cataract Gorge Protection Society.

Pat and Geoff undertook a huge task in the restoration of “Arcoona”, one of Deloraine’s prominent period homes. This was their home for over twenty years. While living at Arcoona, Pat and Geoff held a number of Art Exhibitions as part of the Craft Fair and hosted the opening of the Fair many times. They also hosted the Fairs’ VIP guests for lunch on several occasions.

When Pat first came to live in Deloraine she was on the Deloraine Council’s Districts Promotion Council which aimed to overcome any disadvantages arising from Deloraine being bypassed. The Committee came up with many forward thinking ideas and inspiration, which contributed to Deloraine being an example of progress to the rest of Australia for many years.

Pat became a member of the Rotary Club of Deloraine 16 years ago, representing Education. Within very few years she was elected President, the first female to hold this position. Pat’s association with Rotary inspired her to persuade many students under her watch and their schools to participate in Rotary programmes, including the Model United Nations Assembly, Science Summer Schools, forums and many other educational programmes.

Pat is a Member and a Past President of the Inner Wheel Club of Deloraine, participating in their many charitable activities.

It can be seen that for nearly all of her life Pat has devoted her attention to improving the situation of people around her, both in her profession as a school teacher and as a conscientious citizen. Pat has been a good example of “Service Above Self”. To this end we congratulate you on being awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW RECOGNITION

PP PAT & RTN GEOFF WOODS

PATRICIA WOODS

Born and educated at Claremont in Hobart before attending Ogilvie High School, Hobart High and the University of Tasmania, Pat Woods chose her career as a teacher by the time she was in Grade 3. While still at High School she used to go to the local Primary School where she had been a student and help in the first week of the new year, before High School resumed. Pat was a Sunday School teacher and became Superintendent of the Claremont Methodist Church Sunday School before she was nineteen years old. At this time she was also Secretary of the Claremont Community Committee.

At University Pat gained her Tasmanian Teachers' Certificate, Bachelor of Arts, Diploma of Education and finally Master of Education (1995). She has held Education Department leadership positions in many areas of Tasmania: urban and rural, from very large schools to very small and has an excellent understanding of the issues that affect students, staff and communities in all different settings.

Her teaching and leadership experience has encompassed the whole spectrum of education: infant, primary and secondary, including the establishment of post-compulsory education in her school at Ouse, where she accepted a posting as Acting Principal in 2002 and now as AST at Launceston College.

Pat’s career has taken her to many different areas in Tasmania where she has taught and lived. Wherever she has gone she has always become an active member of the community. These include:- New Town Primary, Queechy High, Winnaleah Area, Campbell Town District, Taroona High, Natone Primary, Parklands High, Mole Creek Primary, Glenora District High, Deloraine Primary, Principal at Meander Primary for 10 years and then as a senior at Brooks High School.

On many occasions during her career, Pat has relinquished positions of promotion in favour of her marriage and family. As Geoff was appointed Principal of various schools around the state, Pat relinquished her own promotions to ensure family stability.

Pat has been an inspirational teacher of history encouraging students to research and write from primary sources to give them such a true love of the subject, with many advancing to study the subject and succeed at much higher levels. Her English classes have included the production of many plays for performance and competition, inspiring a genuine love of English at all levels.

Pat has been involved in the production of three books, helping Geoff produce the book “Arcoona–A Country Doctor’s Residence,” writing a voluminous history of the “West family”, and she wrote the “History of the Deloraine Dramatic Society 1981–2001”.

Over the thirty years Pat has been involved in the Deloraine Dramatic Society she has been President, Secretary, Vice President, director of plays and musicals and organiser of Drama Festivals. She founded the Deloraine Dramatic Society’s Statewide Adult Drama

ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE

TASMANIA D9830 TO SOUTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND D9980

A team of 15 Rotarians from Tasmania, led by Team Leader Lesley Dare, visited the South Island of New Zealand. The Team visited 8 Rotary Clubs, and travelled south from Christchurch down the east coast to Invercargill, and then north to the west coast to Queenstown,

before returning to Christchurch.

The Team travelled in two vans and usually stayed two nights in each city. In the smaller towns, we stayed one night.

5 presentations were given to Rotary Clubs, where we talked about Tasmania and our Clubs. On other evenings we were the guests for a Club BBQ, or spent the time with our hosts.

On the Otago Peninsula we were the guests of Monach Cruises, and in Queenstown we were the guests of Real Journeys, who own the TSS Earnslaw Steamship (photograph shows PP John checking out this vessel).

During our visit we had the opportunity to visit Milford Sound, Stewart Island and Mt Cook, to name a few place.

Apart from the spectacular scenery we were home hosted by extremely friendly Rotarians, who welcomed us into their homes, however it is the friendships we made that stay with us and we look forward to their return visit later this year.

PP Lesley Dare PP Lesley will be the Chairman of the District Friendship Exchange for 2012/13. If you would like to part of a Friendship Exchange, or have any ideas of places to visit, please let PP Lesley know.

“GIFT OF SIGHT” EYE CAMP—NEPAL

A group of 10 Rotarians and partners from our District (from our Club Rtn Isabelle), have just returned from attending the ‘Gift of Sight’ eye camp in Nepal. It was a most rewarding experience and brought great benefit to people living in remote villages outside of Hetauda who normally receive little or no medical care.

The clubs of our District have supported two eye camps in Nepal this year, one in November and the other in February. This has enabled 1,590 Nepalese people to have their eyes checked, many of whom received treatment for eye infections and 280 had sight restoring cataract surgery.

A letter has been received from the President of the Rotary Club of Hetauda thanking the 3 clubs from our District that successfully applied for a District Simplified Grant to support this project.

I should add that in all 12 clubs from our District supported the project this year – a great effort.
