TROY — Brukner Nature Center is a rare kind of place in the area that cele-brates nature, people and the collaboration of both for a better world.

The center includes an enclosure for its resident coyote, who is one of 50 perma-nently injured wildlife residents at the cen-ter. Members of the center’s staff also are involved in wildlife research and citizen science projects that are providing impor-tant information about bird migration and other wildlife issues.

The center’s empha-sis on wildlife has made it the leading regional site for wild animal rehabilitation. Staff members and

volunteers have made Brukner Nature Cen-ter the first name on everyone’s list when it comes to finding out about how to help, and then providing that help, for injured or orphaned wildlife.

Wildlife education also is one of the pri-mary missions at the center.

“It’s our goal to make nature avail-able to people and when possible, to take nature to them,” direc-tor Deb Oexmann said. “We put a lot of emphasis on our edu-cational programs for children.”

The center offers a wide variety of educational options including a nature-based preschool, wildlife-focused science education curriculum, and

outreach programs for community groups and festivals. It also provides a nature storytime program for young children and wildlife-themed summer camp experiences for grades K-12.

Brukner Nature Cen-ter also hosts numer-ous events each year including birding walks, night hikes, live wildlife programs,

exhibits of local artists, and a young birder’s club. It also is home to popular public events throughout the year, including the 5K Run Wild for Wildlife, Haunted Woods, a holiday arts and crafts show, photography con-test and the annual Art of Nature fundraiser.

“There aren’t many places where so much is going on, yet you can step out the door and

instantly be transport-ed to such a peaceful place,” Oexmann said. “It makes all the work worthwhile.”

Brukner Nature Cen-ter is located at 5995 Horseshoe Bend Road. The 165-acre main campus and 70-acre River’s Edge Wildlife Preserve host more than 120,000 visitors each year. There are 6 miles of trails at the main location as well

as the Cascade Trail at River’s Edge.

The center has been a showcase for Ohio’s native habitats and wildlife since 1974. It is a privately funded institution that relies on the support of its mem-bers and patrons. More information on mem-bership and becom-ing a volunteer can be found at www.brukner-naturecenter.com or by calling (937) 698-6493.

Staff Report

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Park District is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Many changes have occurred over the past 50 years as the park district has grown. One thing that remains the same is the steadfast commitment

to conserving natural resources and enrich-ing the quality of life for the people of Miami County through stew-ardship, environmental education, outdoor experiences and pas-sive leisure activities.

According to park district executive direc-tor J. Scott Myers, the park district’s mission

which focuses on con-servation and quality of life, was developed as a result of feedback from the community.

“Our citizens are at the heart of what we do,” said Myers, “and we are grateful for their continued support.”

“The yearlong cel-ebration will focus mainly on remember-ing the things we have accomplished together and the wonderful

things yet to come,” Myers said.

Special posts on social media are encouraging followers to take a “Time Hop” to the past each Tuesday and share preferences on “Favorite Fridays.”

There is also a spe-cial 50th anniversary logo to commemorate the golden anniversary.

TROY — Once the largest manufacturer of civil aircraft in the country in the late 1920s and early ’30s, WACO Air Museum now offers a wide variety of entertaining and educational events

This summer, the museum will host events for all ages and interests, from robotics camp and remote control airplanes, to vin-tage aircraft fly ins and an inter-national truck show.

Over the next few months, thrill-seekers and historical air-plane enthusiasts will have the opportunity to take a ride in an open-cockpit biplane.

“That’s a bucket list kind of thing,” Director Gretchen Hawk said.

These rides are offered on sev-eral weekends throughout the summer and fall at a cost of $100 and a schedule can be found at www.wacoairmuseum.org.

WACO also offers educational camps for aviation and robotics, Learning Center Director Nancy Royer said.

The STEM focused robotics camp is designed to teach stu-dents concepts in science, tech-nology, mechanics, engineering, and computer programming by building a robot with LEGO bricks, gears, axles, motors and sensors.

On Sept. 27, WACO will be host to the 28th annual Interna-tional Harvester Scout and Truck Nationals, one of the largest showings of International Har-vester-made trucks and equip-ment in the world.

One of the biggest events of

the year, the WACO Fly In, will be held Sept. 15-17. WACO plane owners fly their aircraft back to Troy, the site of their manufacture, from all over the country.

Visitors are invited to come and see the aircraft close up and talk to the people who restored, main-tain and fly these machines. Dur-ing this event, guests may also take a ride in an open cockpit biplane.

Seminars and lectures are scheduled throughout the year.

Historic WACO Field is located on 22 acres just south of Troy.

In 1997, a local group of WACO enthusiasts moved a historic 1856 barn to the site and restored it. The barn is now used for storage.

The 7,500-square-foot hangar building, now home to the WACO Aircraft Museum and Learn-ing Center, includes a research

library, a classroom/conference room, gift shop and museum offices.

In September 2009, a third building was added to the site.

The museum hangar build-ing is home to a number of vin-tage WACO aircraft, along with detailed panel displays of the his-tory of the WACO Aircraft Co.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for military (with ID,) $3 for students, and free for children under the age of six.

For a full list of upcoming events and more information on how to register for camps or classes, visit www.wacoairmu-seum.org.

PIQUA — A veritable font of Miami County history, Johnston Farm and Indian Agency helps tell the back-story of Piqua and its vicinity to visitors and local folks alike. Whether you’re perus-ing the museum’s col-lection of Native Amer-ican cultural artifacts, touring the historical Johnston farmhouse or canawling along the Miami and Erie Canal, you’ll leave the site with a bit more knowl-edge of and apprecia-tion for this area than when you arrived.

Tucked away north of town off State Route 66 at 9845 N. Hardin Road, Johnston Farm and Indian Agency is named for John John-ston, a native Irishman who purchased the land then known as Upper Piqua in 1804, the site features a three-story farmhouse where Johnston and his wife, Rachel, raised 15 children, as well as a two-story spring house and a cider house. At more than 200 years old, a double-penned log barn, said to be the oldest and largest of its type in Ohio, is still in use on the grounds.

Johnston served as a

U.S. Factor and Indian Agent, including dur-ing the War of 1812, when he played an essential role in earn-ing the trust of various Ohio Indian tribes dur-ing a turbulent time.

After the war ended, the Upper Piqua Indian Agency continued until 1829, though Native Americans continued for years to come to the farm for the help and company of their old friend Johnston.

In homage and memory of the vari-ous tribes that inhab-ited the area during that time, Johnston Farm’s Indian Museum offers one of the most extensive collections of Native American artifacts and his-tory in the state. The museum also houses a display dedicated to Ohio’s canal era, and boasts a two-year-old, 1,300-square-foot, state-of-the-art educa-tion center overlook-ing the Miami and Erie Canal.

Overseen by site manager Andy Hite, Johnston Farm and Indian Agency opens its doors to school groups in April, with public visits available by appointment only. The farm is officially open to the public in June, July and August,

when hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sun-day.

Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors and AAA and $4 for children 6-12. Children under 5 are admitted free, as are members of the Ohio History Connection and the Johnston Farm Friends Council.

Adventurous guests can enjoy boat rides along the canal aboard the General Harrison of Piqua, a 70-foot replica of the mule-drawn boats used for transportation of pas-sengers and cargo in the 19th century. The General Harrison is one of four operating canal boats in Ohio. Tours of the Johnston Farmhouse are also offered.

Remaining 2017 events include:• History Alive at the Johnston Farm — noon to 5 p.m. July 8-9

Come experience living history at its fin-est. Reenactors will gather at the Johnston Farm to present an his-torical timeline of the years 1748 (Pickawil-lany) to 1862 (Camp Piqua). These years mark the period of the

greatest historical sig-nificance for this land. The events that took place and the people involved all had great impacts on the course of both America and Ohio’s history. A wide variety of camps, dem-onstrations, and activi-ties will take visitors back to some of the most exciting times this place has ever seen. The Johnston home, the Indian and Canal Museum, and the canal boat General Harrison of Piqua all will help visitors visu-alize a time long past. Regular site admission applies.

• evening on the Canal — 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19

Join staff and volun-teers for an evening that takes you back to the time the world moved at 4 miles an hour at the end of a towrope. Participants will begin with a hearty meal served in the Education Center overlooking the Miami and Erie Canal. After dinner guests board the General Harrison of Piqua for a twilight journey on the canal that is always full of surprises for each pas-senger. This is a reser-vation only event. The cost is $35 for adults,

MIAMI COUNTY — The Tri-County Board of Mental Health unveiled its vision for a “one-stop shop” for health and human services under one roof in a center they’ve dubbed “One Wellness Place” during a fund-raising campaign and ground breaking ceremony in January.

The project plans to construct a 35-40,000-square-foot build-ing to house a variety of health and human services agencies. The TCBMH recently purchased 7.7 acres from Roger and Scherre Mumpower on North County Road 25-A near Lytle Road for the future “One Well-ness Place” project site, adja-cent to the Health Partners of Miami County.

It was an inefficient and bur-densome process that sparked the idea of a one-stop center for the Tri-County Board of Mental Health to host commu-nity resources under one roof, according to Executive Director Mark McDaniel.

“We wanted to have a much more structured process for people to come into for a more comprehensive assessment. Individuals would come in for services and then be assessed for a wide array of services all the way from addiction services, mental health and dental ser-vices, and all kinds of medical and health related things, so we

really wanted to broaden our scope,” McDaniel said.

McDaniel estimated a savings of $250,000 in overhead costs once the community organiza-tions are under one roof, redi-recting the funds back into the agencies and the clients they serve, he said. Streamlining the services would allow rent savings and agencies would prorate utilities costs with one another at One Wellness Place.

“We feel we have a project that this county and this com-munity will be very proud of,” McDaniel said.

McDaniel said the building design process will kick off this week, which will include ways agencies can share space and coordinate with one others with-in the facility.

Memorandums of under-standing have been made for the planning and development stage of the project with the following agencies: Tri-County Board of Recovery and Mental Health Services, Recovery and Wellness Centers of Midwest Ohio, Community Housing, NAMI of Darke, Miami and Shel-by Counties, SafeHaven Inc., Miami County Health Depart-ment, Miami County Dental Clinic and Miami County Recov-ery Council. Other agencies may partner with the One Well-ness Place project as it devel-ops, McDaniel said.

The Tri-County Board has earmarked $2 million of its own funding for the project, which will be a public/private part-nership with the community, McDaniel said. Services would be available for Miami, Shelby

and Darke county residents.“We know we have a lot of

work to do yet. We have not raised all the funds we need — we’ve raised a lot of funds, but we have not raised all that we need,” McDaniel said. “This is an opportunity for us to break ground and recognize all the hard work we have done, but we recognize there is a lot more hard work to be done.”

Support for the project includes $500,000 from the Dayton Development Coalitions Priority Development and Advo-cacy Committee through the fis-cal year 2017-18’s state capital budget bill. The funding was secured with help from local legislators Sen. Bill Beagle and Rep. Dr. Stephen Huffman.

CareSource Inc. also pledged $220,000 for the project as well as in-kind staff.

Other donors include the Troy Foundation, Miami Valley Steel Services in memory of Heather Dawson, The Dayton Foundation, Minster Bank, The George B. Quatman Foundation, the Neils and Ruth Lundgard Charitable Trust and the Hartzell Nor-ris Trust have contributed or pledged donations.

The Troy Foundation has designated a 501 (c) (3) non-profit fund called the Tri-County Board of Mental Health Building Fund.
