ST. LUKE 'S CATHOLIC SCHOOLGRADE 4 CLASS is doing their part
For A GREENER FUTURE .
The boys and girls in Suzanne Di Mauro's grade 4 class know how determined disposable
food packaging can be on the environment and they want no part of it. The class is
leading St. Luke's Catholic School in a litterless lunch program that encourages
students to bring lunches that have been packaged in reusable containers.
When the class found out that Community Life wanted to showcase their efforts they decided
amongst themselves to wear green or blue and make "GO GREEN" badges to show their
support for the environment.
As Jasmina Gusic sees it, her class is doing their part to save the one gift we all share.
I think it's good because we're not polluting, we only have one environment."
"
"
"It makes me feel good to help because if we
don't help the environment it will be really
bad for all of us." said Gusic.
Di Mauro's students promote the litterless
lunch campaign within the school by singing
litterless lunch promotions to the student
body during morning announcements. Di
Mauro says that many of the students have
even encouraged their parents to become
more environmentally conscious.
At the beginning of the school year many of the students had
plastic throw-away water bottles, but now most of them have
reusable ones," said Mrs. Di Mauro.
It's been an extremely positive program for them."
Zack Norman says he has encouraged his mother to purchase
more reusable containers and wants to do as much as he can to
keep the earth clean. "Our class wants to do even more to help,"
said Norman. "I just wish everyone else would start respecting
the environment. The world would be a cleaner place."
The program was developed by St. Luke's School Council
co-chairs Joanne Capano and Sandy Cruz. In addition to helping
the environment, they felt that the program would encourage
parents to make healthier food choices.
"Good, nutritious food doesn't come in packages," said Capano
who is a holistic nutritionist. "We are trying to encourage parents
to make more whole foods."
It can take more time to prepare and cook whole foods, but Cruz
says that ditching individually packaged products makes more
financial sense.
"We've been sold this convenience by food companies, but in this
economic environment it is cheaper to buy in bulk or make foods
and use reusable packaging," said Cruz. "There's no reason why
we need so much garbage. It's just ridiculous."
St. Luke's School Council began the program in
January, and originally intended for it to last a month,
but when they saw how successful the initiative had
been it was expanded to every Thursday of the school
year. They hope the program inspires parents and
students to make every day a litterless lunch day.
"It all comes down to awareness, and it's going to start
with the kids," said Cruz. "If you plant the seed early
enough the idea will grow."

TIPS FOR PARENTSTIP ONEPackaging every part of your child's lunch in reusable containers
can be tricky, but with a little extra time and creativity it can be
done. Joanne Capano and Sandy Cruz recommend these ways to
help you avoid the use of commonly packaged foods.
TIP TWOInstead of sending your child with processed gummy fruit snacks,
try sending fresh fruit or dried fruit products. Dried fruit can be
bought for a lower cost at local bulk food stores.
TIP THREEGranola bars can be a tough one, but there are many
no bake recipes for oak bars that take less than 10
minutes to make can then be placed into reusable
containers.
TIP FOURInstead of sending packaged cheese snacks, buy a big
block of cheese and cut it up.
TIP FIVEInstead of buying individually packaged yogurt,
buy large tubs and ration it into plastic or glass
containers. Pre-rationing foods like yogurt,
applesauce and pudding into individual containers on
the weekend can save time during the weekdays. CL

Traveling is a wonderful opportunity to see the world, but it can come with stress that can turn a vacation into an experience you quickly want to forget. Sticking to exhausting itineraries, eating an abundance of rich foods, and even planning a visit with family can turn an enjoyable vacation into a stressful experience.
A little advanced planning can help alleviate some of the traditional stresses travelers experience during holiday visits, winter vacations and spring break trips, allowing everyone in the family to enjoy the journey.
STRESS-FREETips for
TRAVELPack a Medicine BagIt’s very easy to catch a traveler’s cold or end up suffering with digestive issues from eating out and indulging in too many sweet or spicy foods. Make certain to include pain killers, cold and allergy medicines. Also, it’s a good idea to keep an anti-bacterial hand wash with you. There are many on the market that require no water, just rub on your hands to keep those nasty bugs away. →
Be OrganizedKeep a folder or notebook filled with every detail of information you will, or may need. These details include important telephone numbers, insurance information, as well as all travel details like flight times, car rental information, hotel reservation, addresses and tickets to any events you might be attending while on your trip. Also pack (separately from your purse) photo copies of your personal information like driver’s license, passport and credit cards. Create a second set and give them to a friend or family member not traveling with you. They should be able to email or fax them if an emergency situation happens. Having the photo copies of the original information will help shorten the time it will take to get official replacements.

Comfort is KingA long road trip or plane flight can have anyone feeling rumpled and uncomfortable. To make these travels more comfortable, consider wearing slip-on shoes - they’re easy to remove to go through security at an airport and can be kicked off in the car to help relax your feet. Also pack breezy and loose-fitting clothing and keep a sweater handy in case you get cold in the plane or the car.
Traveling for the holidays, or a spring break vacation is meant to be a relaxing and enjoyable. So plan ahead, follow these simple tips to relieve any stresses, and let the fun begin. CL
Courtesy of ARA Content
Use TechnologyToday, with the use of cell phones travel has become much easier. Airline and hotel applications can notify you about delay and cancellations, allow you to check-in for your flight before leaving for the airport, select seats on the plane, and confirm your hotel reservation. Some airlines even allow you to scan a boarding pass directly from your Smartphone. Pack headphones and use your Smartphone to carry favourite tunes to help soothe your mind and relax your body while traveling. It will make the long road trip or flight go much quicker.
Bring SnacksAirport food is expensive and many airlines have done away with in-flight snacks. Dry foods can be taken through airport security, so bring along trail mix, granola bars or sandwich crackers to help keep hunger pains at bay, and save you time and money when at the airport. For longer flights that serve a meal, call the airline ahead if you need to request a special needs meal.
