Capital Public Radio’s strategic plan 2016-2019 outlines four major initiatives.

This community impact report highlights some of our progress to date.

COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT | 3

The recent election and the stakes for California and the United States have prompted the Capital Public Radio team and staff to reflect on our mission and the vital role we play in this new political landscape. There is significant uncertainty about what will happen to our country and a widespread distrust of “fake news.”

Steve Inskeep, the host of NPR’s Morning Edition, identifies the widespread belief in fake news as a mere symptom of a bigger problem: “It’s better to call this a post-trust era. Many Americans doubt what governments or authorities tell them and [thus] dismiss real news from traditional sources.”

CapRadio plays a unique and fundamental role in fortifying the resilience of our communities in these uncertain times. Relevant and reliable information is now more important than ever in order to hold our elected officials accountable. Our robust team of dedicated journalists will continue to follow controversial issues, question power structures and keep us on the path to a healthy, just, and thriving region.

We are watchdogs of California government for the entire state through our Capital Public Radio Network. We are the first public media outlet nationally to partner in the creation of our own fact checking initiative: PolitiFact California. Fact-based journalism holds accountable elected officials, candidates and others in positions of power.

We also play a key role in the cultural infrastructure of our region. We are in the process of conducting a series of community conversations to help inform our arts and music programming as part of our “Classical Music Rising” project. Rest assured that we will shine a bright light on the needs of our cultural institutions.

Thank you for supporting us in the past and now, more than ever.

WE STRIVE TO

Develop Essential and Indispensable ContentWe aspire to be more than just storytellers. We tell stories well and with the purpose of having lasting impact.

CALIFORNIA COUNTS & ELECTION COVERAGE

Our year-long #CACounts collaboration with California’s major public media stations included events and coverage with KPBS in San Diego, KPCC in Los Angeles, and KQED in San Fransisco. Some highlights included:

› A town hall panel of Prop 64 to legalize recreational marijuana.

› US Senate Debate in San Diego with Managing Editor Linnea Edmeier.

› Sacramento Mayoral Debate at Sacramento State with Reporter Bob Moffitt.

MUSICAL MOMENTS

CapRadio Music sponsors many community events including the Crocker Art Museum’s monthly classical music series and the Sacramento Music Festival. Donna

Apidone, Kevin Doherty, Nick Brunner and Cale Wiggins emceed throughout the year.

We featured personal stories from listeners about the importance of classical music in their lives during our “My Classical Moment” campaign online and on the air.

INSIGHT WITH BETH RUYAK

In April, Insight teamed up with the Crocker Art Museum to present a live “Sound Advice.” Jazz Director Gary Vercelli introduced the audience to music inspired by the Beat Poetry Generation. Insight also produced two one-hour specials. Our Veteran’s Day episode told the first-person account of a mid-air collision between B52 bombers stationed in Sacramento. In November, the “End of Life” special included stories from Northern Californians facing terminal illnesses and making tough, personal, end-of-life decisions.

CALIFORNIA DEBT PROJECT

A unique collaboration by the Los Angeles Times, CapRadio and CALmatters.org to explore California’s multibillion-dollar debt on the retirement promises owed to public employees. It resulted in a series of stories over several months in late 2016 to explore the causes, costs and impacts of public pensions and retiree health care. The goal is to help Californians understand how millions of public employees dictate so much without regard for whether taxpayers can afford these benefits.

ROADSIDE DISTRACTIONS

In 2016 we launched a newsroom series using listener/reader suggestions to ask the question “What is that on the side of the road?” These became some of our most popular online stories of the year, including Dixon’s Milk Farm and the mysterious “Ocean City Maryland,” marker on Interstate 80.

POLITIFACT AT THE CALIFORNIA MUSEUM

We celebrated our partnership with the pulitzer-prize winning PolitiFact team by hosting a sold-out evening of satire and fun with the Political Junkie at the California Museum.

CAPRADIO GARDEN

In our second year we donated more than 2,500 pounds of fresh produce to local food programs, a 1,000 pound increase over the previous year. We established a volunteer corps and strengthened educational ties with Sacramento State, encouraging students to explore nutrition, cooking, agriculture and ecology. CapRadio partnered with Sac State’s “closed-loop program,” a nationally-awarded sustainability effort to transform waste into biofuel and compost. This enriched soil fed our first winter garden of root vegetables, leafy greens, legumes and herbs, and our busy bees produced more than 100 pounds of floral wildflower honey.

THE VIEW FROM HERE: CALIFORNIA UNDOCUMENTED

The latest of our award-winning multimedia documentary series tells the stories of three Mexican immigrants: a working father of three, a dental school grad student and a man whose gay marriage led to a change in status. Despite lack of legal status and without a path to citizenship, they are making lives for themselves and their families. The program was aired by more than a dozen stations around the country and was the culmination of an unprecedented year-long CapRadio News initiative examining undocumented immigration in California.

JAZZ ON CAMPUS

How do young people feel about jazz? Find out with our occasional series “Excellence In Jazz On Campus.” Guest student musician DJs sit in with Gary Vercelli, picking tunes and talking about what the music means to them.

GARRISON KEILLOR FAREWELL PARTY

Garrison Keillor retired from the popular “A Prairie Home Companion” show he created 40 years ago. Fans joined us in studio for his last performance in June.

SCIENCE FRIDAY LIVE

More than 800 nerds joined us for a live taping of Science Friday at the Mondavi Center UC Davis. The show explored California’s most precious resource: water.

LOCAL CONTENT THROUGH THE NPR ONE APP

The NPR One audio app provides news, stories and podcasts to listeners throughout the nation and the world. This year, more than 7,000 listeners who identify with CapRadio started using NPR One. Our local newscast is available twice a day to complement the national newscast. Our stories and podcasts load in alongside the offerings from NPR and other stations.

WE STRIVE TO

Deepen Our Relationship With Our AudienceWe are authentic and connected to our listeners, members and fans. We will continue to listen, diversify and engage.

NEXT GENERATION JOURNALISM BOOTCAMP

CapRadio, NPR and Sac State hosted the “Next Generation Radio Training and Mentorship Week.” Six students worked closely with experienced journalists from across the nation, receiving instruction on a variety of topics from audio editing to photography. They left with real-life skills that immediately benefit their professional aspirations.

NEW CLASSICAL HOST

Kevin Doherty joined the CapRadio Music team as Morning Classical Host. Doherty is a professional opera performer with an engaging on-air style.

WE STRIVE TO

Invest In Our TalentTogether, we build an epic workplace where anything is possible. We embrace change and encourage innovation. We bring our passion and have fun. Our audience always come first.

WE STRIVE TO

Develop our InfrastructureWe’ll modernize our technical infrastructure to keep pace with the needs of listeners and leverage new technological opportunities.

INFRASTRUCTURE

We upgraded all production studios and booths with fan-less workstations that run the most current audio playout automation and control systems.

GREAT SHAKEOUT DRILL

In partnership with NPR, we joined a drill to alert Californian’s about impending earthquakes. “Great Shakeout” allowed us to upgrade our Enco system, resulting in the

opportunity for some listeners to see more information displayed in their cars or on their apps.

FINANCIALS

CFO Report on Budget JUN REINA

I’ve always taken pride in our organization’s willingness to innovate and embrace new challenges. One of the first things you notice when you walk into our studios on the Sacramento State campus is the CapRadio Garden, a large fruit and vegetable garden right in our back yard. The Garden embodies all key news areas that we cover: Food & Sustainability, the Environment, Health Care, and State Government. It’s become a vital

vehicle for CapRadio in engaging our audience and the community.

The 2016 fiscal year was very good for CapRadio! Total revenues for the year rose from $11.1 Million in 2015 to $12.6 Million in 2016. Growth was driven by our two largest revenue streams: individual contributions grew 13% year-over-year and corporate underwriting grew 14%. Our Evergreen and sustainer program has been touted as one of the most successful and

effective programs industry wide. Today, thanks to your support, close to 50% of our 35,000 members call themselves sustainers of CapRadio.

For the fiscal year 2016, we invested $8.3 Million or 67% of our total expenditures directly in Programming and Broadcasting activities. We continue to benefit from a strong financial position. A consolidated balance sheet shows total assets of $10.7 Million with total liabilities of $3 Million.
