On behalf of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, and the many people of the Pacific who need your help, thank you for your interest in FUN-draising for Fred! This ‘How to’ kit gives you all the information you need to restore someone’s sight and change people’s lives. The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ works in the Pacific where 4 out of 5 people who are blind don’t need to be; their condition is preventable or treatable. We restore sight to the needlessly blind and train local eye health specialists to provide eye care services in their own communities. ` Around 70 per cent of avoidable blindness in the Pacific is caused by cataracts, a cloudiness in the lens of the eye. Modern cataract surgery, which uses an intraocular lens (IOL) to replace the clouded lens of the eye, takes just 20 minutes and can cost as little as $25 in some countries. So be bold, be brave, challenge yourself but, best of all, help restore sight to those who are needlessly blind. With your support we can make a real difference so THANK YOU! SPREAD THE WORD! We’d love to share your experience to inspire others, so please let us know how your fundraiser went and remember take lots of photos! The Fred Hollows Foundation

The Fred Hollows Foundation carries on the work of a very special New Zealander, the late Professor Fred Hollows. Fred was an internationally acclaimed eye surgeon and social justice activist who championed the right of all people to high quality and affordable eye care. The Fred Hollows Foundation shares Fred’s vision of a world where no one is needlessly blind, and works to end avoidable blindness in more than 29 developing countries across Asia, Africa and the Pacific. In the last five years alone, The Foundation has performed nearly one million sight-restoring operations and treatments, and trained more than 38,000 local eye health specialists.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ works in the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste where 4 out of 5 people who are blind don’t need to be; their condition is preventable or treatable. We restore sight to the needlessly blind and train local eye health specialists to provide eye care services in their own communities.

Like Fred, we work with and beside local people to build world-class eye care systems. We train

surgeons, nurses and community health workers and give them the tools and support they need

to restore sight in their own communities. Every year, Foundation-trained eye health specialists

perform thousands of sight-restoring surgeries at our clinics and through our surgical outreach

program.

Our surgical outreach teams travel to

remote communities where eye care

services are limited or non-existent.

They screen patients for a range of eye

problems, provide cataract and other

sight-restoring surgeries, and dispense

brand new, ready-made spectacles. The

Pacific is a very challenging place to

work, with populations spread over

hundreds of remote island communities.

How to get involved Firstly, read through the rest of this ‘How to’ pack for fundraising ideas and tips. Then have a good think about what you might do and who might want to be involved. Once you’ve decided what you want to do, share the news! Let us know what you plan to do and if there is anything we can do to help with your event. Make sure you leave plenty of time to organise and plan your event. Don’t forget to make sure you have any permission from anyone that you may need to get permission from. And please remember to keep safe and operate at all times within the law. While Fred may have been a bit of a rebel we don’t want to put yourself, or others, in danger. For as little as $25, the cost of a movie and some popcorn, you can restore sight to someone in the Pacific. So get your family, friend and community together and make a difference the world can see!

Give a little Website We recommend that fundraisers, like you, use www.givealittle.co.nz to collect donations and keep your supporters up to date with your progress. It's a great Kiwi website that makes fundraising easy for individuals, schools, and clubs, and best of all, it's free! It allows your supporters to make safe and secure online donations and receive a tax receipt immediately so that they can claim back a third of their donations at the end of the tax year. There are great storytelling tools (including blogs, image galleries and videos) and you can share your story on your own Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn pages.

The donations you raise are then deposited into our bank account so you don’t have to count or send them in.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ Logo If you would like to use The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ logo to support your fundraising activities, you will need to contact us to approve before you undertake any activity on our behalf. Depending on the type of activity you have planned, approval can be given within 3 to 5 working days.

Get in touch If you need any help or have any questions please get in touch with us by email [email protected], phone 0800 227 229 or fax (09) 379 7178.

Seven simple steps for Fred’s FUNdraisers 1. Decide, plan and prepare Decide on what you want to do and put together a plan of action. Make your fundraiser as big or as small you would like. Set a target of how much you would like to raise – it will make you more determined & others may feel more generous to help you reach it! Remember to ask yourself lots of ‘W’ questions: who, what, when, where, why and how. For example ’Who will be in charge of collecting the donations?’ ‘What will we do if it rains?’ 2. Spread the word Perhaps you might like to make some posters & put them up; send out emails to all your friends and family;– TALK, TALK, TALK! The free fundraising website www.givealittle.co.nz is a great resource you can use to collect donations and to keep everyone up to date with your progress. You might try to make contact with the editor of your local newspaper. You never know, they might be interested in running a story. It’s a great way to inspire others and to get Fred’s name out there. We’ve included a how-to guide further on. 3. D-Day Enjoy the day… it’ll be a HIT! Relax and enjoy it – after all it’s for a fantastic cause! But remember to be safe while you FUN-draise – make sure you don’t risk your own safety or that of others. 4. Bank the money Tally up your fundraising money and organise a cheque or money bank deposit (see ‘How to bank the money’ below). Send it back with the slip included in this pack. If you’ve set up a givealittle page, you don’t need to worry with this step. 5. Say THANK YOU Say thank you to everyone who attended and/or helped you out. Tell them how much

you appreciated their help and support to change the future of so many people.

6. Relax & rest up!

Sit down, put your feet up and RELAX! The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ says ‘THANKS’ for a great effort!

7. Send us your photos and stories

We’d love to hear about your day and to use your pictures and stories on our website to inspire others.

Writing a Press Release

Here are a few tips on how to get your fundraising event in the news and to hopefully raise as many donations as possible! The best way to get your story in the media is by sending a press release to local media prior to your event. A press release is simply a written statement informing the media of your news. To get attention it needs to be short, bold, snappy and follow an expected format.

Follow these steps and you should find the reporters knocking at your gates. Firstly, you are competing with other stories so do something as weird, wild and wacky (whilst keeping safe and operating within the law) as you can! You’re most likely to attract the interest of your local paper and radio station this way. Remember you already have a few things on your side:

Local media like to cover community events and are always looking for new stories

Fred Hollows is a Kiwi, someone to be proud of; the media will be interested in a link to a Kiwi hero

Secondly, you need to sit down and write it. This is a great opportunity to do a final check that you do have everything organised and ready for the big day. Thirdly, send it off and watch the donations come flooding in!

Writing the press release: 1) Make it short and snappy, no more than one page. 2) Type the release, and check the spelling. 3) Write the date and ‘For Immediate Release’ at the top. 4) Make the headline big and bold, and interesting. 5) Get your message across in the first paragraph, saying who, what, where,

when and how. Keep it short! 6) Write //ENDS at the end of your release and add your contact details after

//ENDS.

When: 1) Don’t post media releases on Friday – they get lost in the weekend

newsroom. 2) Monday is a good day, so the Monday of the same week of your event is a

good time (no later). Check with your local paper for any copy deadlines – remember that community papers often print only once a week and they might need copy up to a week in advance. So don’t leave it too late.

Page 8: Community fundraising kit 2013

7

How to send it: 1) Email or fax your press release. Call the paper to check contact details so it

reaches the right person. With small papers, this is usually the Editor but larger papers might have a Chief Reporter covering local news.

2) Follow up with a phone call, either later on or the next day. Check if they got your release and see if they are interested in following it up or need any other information.

Photo opportunities: From the paper’s point of view an original and visual activity is going to be of most interest- so get weird, wild and wacky! It is a good idea to take some of your own pictures. That way, if they don’t send a photographer, you can offer good quality copies to the local press immediately afterwards - this action often pays off as it makes their job easy! The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ would also like your pictures to put up on our website, so please take some for us too. And that is it. Simple!
