Community Choral Project 2017Fiesta!

The City is proud to announce that the Community Choral Project returns for its fifth year in 2017 with Fiesta! a celebration of the rich rhythms and melodies of Latin American inspired music. Open to men and women of all ages and abilities, this is a great opportunity to participate in your community, have some fun and learn from masters of music.

Feeding into the City’s spectacular two-day arts and culture festival, the Community Choral Project is important for the development and growth of the arts sector in Joondalup. The community will be offered the opportunity to work with one of Australia’s most polished all-rounded musicians, Jangoo Chapkhana, rehearsing exhilarating Latin American music for seven weeks, to be performed in two live concerts.

Who can be involved? The community choral project is a community arts project open to all members of the community in particular those people who have always wanted to participate in a choir but never dared. No experience is necessary and no auditions are required. Register online by completing a form on the City’s website at joondalup.wa.gov.au or call 9400 4927.

If you are interested in participating in the choir but have access issues that are preventing you from doing so, please contact the City to discuss ways in which we can help you overcome these barriers. Singing in a group has powerful effects on the health and well-being of a community. The City would like to make sure this opportunity is available to all our residents, especially those who may be socially isolated or at-risk in the community.

History of the Choral ProjectFor the first time in 2013, the City of Joondalup showcased a Community Choral Project as part of the official opening to the Joondalup Festival. The City commissioned composer Alberto Caruso and writer Vivienne Glance to create a new choral work called Banuru Songs to be performed as a world premiere by individuals, ensembles, school groups and community choirs from Joondalup and beyond.

After the success of its inaugural year the choir came back in 2014. This time the City commissioned MacMusiCo to create an eight-part harmonic arrangement of songs that explored the 1950s and themes of travel and migration. Members of Perth Harmony Chorus and Vocal Evolution (two Perth based barbershop choirs) along with 100 community members came together to perform Back to Barbershop! as part of the Festival finale.

Then in 2015, the Community Choir cemented itself as one the City’s leading community engagement projects receiving unprecedented positive feedback for the production of West End Wonder under the musical direction of Jangoo Chapkhana. The performance attracted 130 performers from the community and local choral groups. Accompanied by professional soloists Brendan Hanson and Sharon Kiely along with a band, the choir performed an arrangement of classics from hit musicals including Grease, Les Miserables and Rent.

Continuing that success in 2016 the choir performed A Hard Day’s Night, a tribute to the Beatles and the 60s. Under the expert musical direction of Chapkhana, the Choir performed classic hits such as All you Need is Love, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, When I’m Sixty-Four and Yesterday. The popularity of the choir grew once again, with nearly 200 members joining in for two packed out performances at the Joondalup Festival.

Now in 2017 the City of Joondalup brings you Fiesta! a celebration of the rich rhythms and melodies of Latin American inspired music. From the relaxed Bossa Nova style of So Nice (Summer Samba), to the fiery Latin rock Something Latin, to the bright Samba Mas Que Nada, along with the well known Mambo Italiano.

New WorkIn 2017 the Community Arts Network (CAN) has supported the Community Choral Project to devise a new work. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a creative workshop to develop the lyrics for a new song, as well as images for visual projections to accompany the choral performances. It is anticipated the collaboration will promote social inclusion, respect for diversity and appreciation of other cultures. More information will be presented about this opportunity at the first rehearsal.

Jangoo Chapkhana, Musical DirectorDescribed by Neville Cohn as “a musical Midas, turning everything he touched into musical gold”, Jangoo Chapkhana is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most polished all-round musicians. A soloist, composer, choral specialist and jazz artist; he is a repetiteur at the University of Western Australia, teaches pianoforte at Edith Cowan University and is the Director of Music at Perth’s historic Trinity Uniting Church.

He has frequently been a soloist in cathedrals in the United Kingdom, South Africa, San Francisco, New Zealand, France and Sydney; and his career highlights include solo recitals in Westminster Abbey (London), Washington National Cathedral (USA), Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (Argentina), Oxford University and Chester Cathedral.

Laura Bernay, SoloistSince completing post graduate studies at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music, Laura Bernay has worked as a singer, pianist and flautist. Her music has taken her all around Australia singing in cabaret, piano bars, jazz venues, luxury ocean liner cruises and TV appearances. Most recently she was on the headline bill for the Noosa Jazz Festival with her original All the Way.

Laura is well-known for her sensational “cross-over” styles of singing. From performing with Jimmy Barnes and her brother Diesel, to sold out jazz performances at the Ellington Jazz Club, to opera solos and leading a world music band, The Last Five Coins. The flexibility and beautiful vocal quality she possesses are testimonies to her many years of performing in so many different styles.

In addition to performing Laura has a passion for teaching singing. She is a sessional lecturer in voice for WAAPA (WA Academy of Performing Arts) and runs a very successful private teaching studio.
