Homelessness in Thompson – The Inclusion of Homeless People’s voices

• Hired research assistants

• Focus groups in different facilities

• Weekly breakfast meetings at 95 Cree Rd.

• Talked to about 35 individuals (What “home” means to them; pathways to

homelessness; current needs, hopes, dreams…)

• Photovoice project

• Published a book chapter

• Presented at conferences

• Engaged students in the issue of homelessness in Thompson

This research has enabled us to:

• Encourage and promote research in the north• Northern Manitoba Research Network• Provide local community examples for student research• Collaborative research

• Public/ community education (via the universities)• sources of funding• sources of research training and expertise• education about research ethics

• Community is strengthening relationships with universities, using our resources and creating new research initiatives• Given us the experience to apply for other grants

• Homeless Point in Time Count• Urban Aboriginal Knowledge Network – youth homelessness

These research projects are being funded by the generous financial support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada through the Manitoba Research Alliance grant: Partnering for Change –Community-based solutions for Aboriginal and Inner-city poverty.
