1 MONTGOMERY COLLEGE n COMMUNITY ARTS

Greetings arts community,As I write, I feel a glimmer of spring in the air. Hopefully it’s fully upon us by the time you read this! The warming weather and budding leaves are a good reminder to plan for summer, and what better to plan than art classes? We have a great selection for you this summer, including plenty of new options like mask making, typography, and poi spinning (with the premiere poi artist in the DC area).

As we continue expanding our offerings, I want to make sure you have ways of finding what you need. To that end, we have a new section in the catalog that features Rockville and Germantown classes, on page 16. We’re also continuing with our Faculty Spotlight and Kudos sections, so you can get to know our faculty and your fellow students better. The Kudos section even includes some upcoming events, so be sure to check it out!

We look forward to you joining our community of artists at Montgomery College. As a reminder, all classes are for students age 16 and older. A tuition waiver is available for students 60 and older. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 240-567-5806.

Thank you,John DeamondCommunity Arts Program Director

Artist: Iris Posner n Title: Petroglyph

I have been studying all types of printmaking with Professor Carr for a number of years and also attended sculpture and other classes. All have enabled me to combine multiple techniques to produce a variety of works. I created Petroglyph in Professor Carr’s Intaglio Printing class.

CO-LISTED CLASSESSome of our classes are co-listed with credit classes. The two sections meet together, and students are held to the same expectations. The only differences are that non-credit students do not have to apply to the college, do not receive a final grade, and seniors can sign up at any time and receive a waiver. Co-listed classes usually have a small number of seats (2-5), so sign up before it’s too late!

Cover Art ist Artist: Gary PeckTitle: Frida Kahlo with Parrot, after painting by Nina D. When I was in Tucson earlier this year I found that every store and restaurant had a portrait of Frida Kahlo. It seemed that each one was unique. I photographed this portrait as it was my favorite. In particular, I enjoyed the bright flowers and the parrot that were included. The artist was Nina D. (it was difficult to read her last name on the canvas). I found that I had to apply several layers of paint in order to approximate the intensity of color in the original painting. I created this in Dr. Maroufi-Colle’s Introduction to Oil Painting class.

Title: Brookside Bridge

I am a retired graphic designer who studied advertising design at University of Maryland and math at Montgomery College. Landscape Painting with Professor Maroufi-Colle was my first painting class. This project began with a sketch and photos taken offsite and assimilated classroom lessons on color, painting trees, perspective, and composition. A captivating class!

Supply lists will be provided the first day of class unless otherwise noted. Campus bookstores carry most of the art supplies you will need.
