In this one-week course, students will be introduced to a range of design tools and skill sets, including idea development, making, documentation and reflection. Participants will discuss and practice visual design elements including form, shape, line, color and texture as well as visual design principles, such as balance, harmony, contrast and hierarchy. Students will learn how these elements and principles can be used to create various meanings and perceptions in their own work, and how they can be utilized to analyze other designers’ or artists’ work. During the program, students will collect and collage objects that define what home/belonging means to them. They will create interesting, sculptural compositions using these objects, while applying elements and principles of design to display their intent. Constantly shifting between 2D and 3D planes, students will translate their compositions on paper using experimental drawing techniques, including tracing, blind and contour drawing, mark making, mixed media, etc. Finally, they will learn how to visually represent and document both the 3D collages and the 2D drawings using digital means. The program will introduce group discussions and activities and will expose students to both local and international artists and designers.

LESSONS: FIVE | TIME: 15 HOURS | DATES: JULY 5 – 9, 2020

Students will be provided with a phrase/word and asked to translate it visually using graphic design as a tool. They will explore the fundamental concepts associated with graphic design by combining analog and digital mediums through scans, drawings, sketches, collages, photographs and typography.

In this course students will learn to incorporate research, illustrations, and other graphics to complete the project. They will gain a basic understanding of layout, composition, color theories and develop simple concepts on the assigned project. Students will gain experience in developing skills with tools, materials, and methods for creating visuals. The course will help students in developing visuals, building technical skills, and enhancing creative thinking. Lastly, the program will conclude with a critique for the students to present the concept and outcome of their projects individually to the class for a discussion.
