HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY, GROUNDHOG DAY AND ALL THE OTHER HOLIDAYS THAT HAPPEN

THIS MONTH! We have lost wonderful residents again in 2014, and it goes without saying they will be missed. We hope you had a very pleasant January and that your February is even better. Valentine’s Day is a major holiday in the U.S. and a million dollar occasion for many businesses. We also have Presidents’ Day, Groundhog Day, Ash Wednesday, and not a holiday but a big day . .. Super Bowl Sunday. So we want you to enjoy all that you can. And don’t forget the Strawberry Festival (YUM!!). We understand some residents are having problems with the gates, and we are really sorry for this. Please remember, if your card is not working, go to the gate tele-pad and call yourself and then press 9 on your cell phone. If you don’t have your cell phone number in the gate, this won’t work for you. But if you call your neighbor and tell them you’re having problems, I’m sure they will let you in. I’m working on getting a dumpster for March . . . I’ll keep you informed as to when this will happen. NEW, NEW, NEW – Winward Lakes has its own television channel now! If you have a cable box, it’s Channel 949: if you don’t have a cable box, it’s Channel 98. The Winward Lakes Channel will alert you to things like the water being turned off or other emergencies. So you can check the channel for information when there is a problem. Bud and Ginger Marion.

Pisces, you are always very generous, but this month more so. Your financial intuition is very sharp. This year could bring a personal pleasure peak, as well as financial windfalls and opportunities. You are motivated to make things happen and achieve personal goals, and you don’t suffer fools lightly. Love opportunities are also seeking you out. A current love is going way out of his or her way to please you. You are having life on your terms now – financially, in your career, and in love.

Aquarius, last month you entered a time of personal pleasure peaks and having things your way. This is a time for exploring the pleasures of the body and for personal pampering. It is also a good time for getting your body and your image in shape. Your spouse, partner or current love is

very devoted – putting your interests ahead of his or her own. Partners, friends, your spouse and siblings seem very supportive. Enjoy!

"I have found that to love and be loved is the most empowering and exhilarating of all human emotions." — Jane Goodall

Presidents' Day is intended to honor all the American presidents, but most significantly George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Their birthdays were celebrated separately until 1968 when Congress created a uniform system of federal Monday holidays and shifted three existing holidays (including Washington's Birthday) to Mondays. The law took effect in 1971, and as a result, Washington's Birthday holiday was changed to the third Monday in February and renamed Presidents’ Day.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK February 9 – 15

International Random Acts of Kindness Week is February 9-15, 2015. Take this week to step out of your normal routine or comfort zone and attempt a new random act of kindness each day of the celebratory week. Here are some ideas . . . Just smile at one extra person. Eat lunch with someone new. Say “I love you” to someone special or give them a hug. Donate unwanted or unused items to a shelter, non-profit or

animal shelter. Buy someone’s groceries or offer to pay for someone’s

purchases when standing in line at the grocery store. Leave the “really good parking place right up front” open for

an expectant mother, person with special needs, or just anyone who will enjoy a good parking space.

GROUNDHOG DAY, FEBRUARY 2ND , is the day the Groundhog - Punsutawaney Phil – comes out of his burrow on Gobbler’s Knob after a long winter sleep to look for his

shadow. If he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole. If the day is cloudy and shadow-less, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground. The celebration of Groundhog Day began with the Germans who settled in Pennsylvania. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states "For as the sun shines on Candlemas day, so far will the snow swirl in May...". Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800's.

Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. The 2015 Black History Month theme is "A Century of Black Life, History and Culture."

The 2015 Daytona 500, the 57th running of the event, will be held on February 22, 2015, at Daytona

International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Contested over 200 laps on the 2.5 miles (4.0 km) asphalt tri-oval, it will be the

first race of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

The inaugural Daytona 500 was run in 1959. Many regard the Daytona 500 as the most prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar, as it carries the largest purse. The race is known as the "Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing" and the "Great American Race." The Daytona 500 is a restrictor plate race, meaning that a device is installed in the intake of the automobiles’ engines, restricting top performance to ensure fair competition and safety. The very first Daytona 500 was won by Lee Petty, racing patriarch and legend. Perry defeated Johnny Beauchamp in an unusual manner - after the race was over, Beauchamp was initially awarded the win, but the call was reversed after several days of poring over the finish line photographs. Perry was declared the victor three days later. DRIVERS TALK ABOUT RACING . . . "The winner ain't the one with the fastest car; it's the one who

refuses to lose." Dale Earnhardt "

Driving a race car is like dancing with a chainsaw." – Cale Yarborough

“The best way to make a small fortune in racing is to start with a big one.” - Junior Johnson

CVD costs the United States over $300 billion each year, including the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity

Plan for Prevention Try out these strategies for better heart health. You'll be surprised how many of them can become lifelong habits!

Get a checkup at least once a year, even if you feel

healthy. Monitor your blood pressure. Get your cholesterol checked . Eat a healthy diet. Maintain a healthy weight. Exercise regularly. Don't smoke. Limit alcohol use. Manage your diabetes. Take your medicine. “It may be possible to incorporate laugher into daily activities, just as is done with other heart-healthy activities, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. The recommendation for a healthy heart may one day be exercise, eat right and laugh a few times a day.” Michael Miller, MD, F.A.C.C., Center for Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center
