While the poverty rate in 2016 declined to

12.7%, poverty among many subgroups is

unacceptable. For example, in 2016 10.8% of

non-Hispanic white children lived in poverty

while 30.8% of African American children

and 26.6% of Latino children were poor.

By 2020, the majority of children who are in poverty will be children of color. This does not help us to build a strong economy aside from the moral or social realities of this data. Poverty is going down; however, the trends with the subpopulations are not okay

•As CAA LEADERS, we have long history of moving individuals and communities forward.

•Still we can and we must do more. •We must dismantle, forces that are pulling our communities apart along social and economic lines.

•We have an opportunity to empower more low-income persons to thrive and become active members of their communities.

UPROOTING POVERTY

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In a 2001 Word-association study, researchers from Kansas and Rice Universities asked subjects to rate how well a variety of words described different social groups. Compared to their ratings of middle-class people, and given no information except economic status, the average subject described poor people as 39% more “unpleasant,” 95 percent more “unmotivated,” and twice as “dirty, In another 2002 study, researchers from Princeton, UCLA, and Lawrence University asked students and adults to gauge society’s views toward several often-stereotyped groups. Other out-groups were demeaned as either incompetent but personally warm, or unfriendly but competent; only the poor were consistently classified as both unfriendly and incompetent. Americans, it seems have uniquely low opinion of poor people: We offer them neither our empathy nor our respect.

Talk about the over all Community Action Theory of Change and connect the work of the Learning Community to the National Theory of Change. Mention one aspect of our assumptions focus on how do what we do and that is critically important. LCRC focuses on the “What” innovative anti-poverty practices which is connects to the core principles an the services and strategies. Additionally. Both the “how” and “what” of what we do as advance the CSBG Network’s ability to mobilize communities to fight poverty through the accomplishment of the three national goals. Finding the best approaches and strategies to improve results or maximize impact.

THE MAGIC

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Magic according to research: For decades, peer-to-peer networks, learning clusters, and communities of practice have proven their worth as methods for accelerating learning and promoting organizational change. This process of convening peers to study, reflect, discuss, and share learning over time has been adopted by numerous professions, academia, and the social sector. The education field uses professional learning community models to guide the collaboration of teachers, parents and school administrators to improve learning. Corporations embrace communities of practice and peer learning networks to streamline operations and save costs. Universities offer students the chance to join learning communities to conduct research together and even share work and living space to foster collaboration. Trade associations, practitioner networks, and community collaboratives adopt learning community program models as ways to accelerate learning and organizational change among practitioners. This learning model has also proven to be effective for the field of Community Action.
