WHEN ARGUMENTS LOSE FOCUS
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Sometimes, people can lose focus on the problem and necessary steps need to be taken in order to ensure that the
claim can be resolved.
THERE ARE 4 SOLUTIONS
There are four (4) ways to deal with debates which have lost
argumentative focus.
When rationality is not always possible, debates tend to lose
argumentative focus
DON’T LOSE ARGUMENTATIVE FOCUS!
SOLUTIONS NEXT EXIT!
SOLUTION #1
BACK-OFF FROM THE CONFLICT/DEBATE
This approach is especially valuable if you realize that you are in a no-win conflict
environment or situation.
SOLUTION #2
GET BACK TO THE CONFLICT/DEBATE AT A LATER, MORE APPROPRIATE TIME FOR
YOU AND/OR THE OTHER PARTY. OFTEN WE PICK A TIME THAT IS
EMOTIONALLY APPROPRIATE FOR US BUT EMOTIONALLY INAPPROPRIATE FOR THE
OTHER PARTY
SOLUTION #3
GO WITH THE FLOW OF THE PROCESS
Not much will happen, but just venting frustration is sometimes helpful, and once such venting takes place it is possible to refocus the debate/conflict and get to a more constructive argumentative path.
SOLUTION #4
REWORK THE CLAIM
Try to get the argument back on track by restating or rewording the claim. Many
times focus is lost because the claim was poorly phrased.
“I’M RIGHT, YOU’RE WRONG”
