Home Science : A Discipline or Combination of
disciplines…?
• There are degrees with Arts as well as Science.• It is a professional course yet domesticated space!• ICSSR lists down 20 subjects-‘communication’ as
well as ‘journalism’ are listed separately. Home Science is not even named.
• University of Kashmir website has ‘Institute of Home Science’ and ‘Food science and technology’ listed as two separate Departments.
My Sources of Data
• Websites of Home Science departments, Institutions or Universities
• Personal Observational analysis of 17 years within PG Home Science space

Evolution of HSEE……today
• Early beginning at MSU, SNDT, DU, Agra• Very new/diverse as a disciplinary space:

HSEE
Retrospect
• Lack of visibility in spite of longer history than MCJ, Social Work or even DevCom
• Home Science is Home where HSEE is field based, doing well within ICAR but not in public universities
• Gendered nature of discipline as well as enrollment boundaries
• Nature of Teacher and Student traits
Prospects
• Mapping HSEE nationally and exploring curricular coverage across institutions
• Broadening the scope of HSEE to urban, linguistic, cultural aspects
• ICT4D, CSR, Sustainable development as newer paths within HSEE
• Use of low-cost, people-centric methods to enhance EE as space within HSEE
