For some time, we have been praying and discussing ways we could communicate the ministries of UABC more effectively. Today we begin one piece of this effort. Through a monthly newsletter, and an abbreviated weekly bulletin, we hope to share a glimpse of the transformation happening around you. We’ll highlight members, ministries, and ways you can share the love of Christ. Our church, after all, is not made of events, but of redeemed people seeking to worship God with their lives together.

We hope you find this newsletter encouraging and effective; and we want your feedback and input! We need to name this newsletter - any ideas!? What or who would you like to see highlighted? Is it easy to read? We really do want to hear from you!

Grace Poei became part of the UABC family because she was invited by a friend in college. Around that time, she met Edwin Owara. Edwin and Grace met on the bus regularly. Edwin is deaf and Grace did not know sign language then, so they used a pen and paper to talk as they rode to their different destinations. Grace later invited Edwin to visit UABC and then continued to pick him up each Sunday for church. This is how the church’s deaf ministry began--by an invitation.

One Sunday, Grace and Edwin were writing back and forth to one another when he wrote, “You know, you need to learn sign language. This is boring!” Grace agreed and started taking sign language classes after work through an adult education program. One of Grace’s instructors assigned a project to her class to help them better understand the struggles of the deaf community. Each person was given a task to complete at Ala Moana Shopping Center without speaking. While Grace had a positive experience, with a very helpful employee, many of her classmates did not. “This was an eye-opening experience for me.” Grace said, “It gave me more compassion and understanding for the deaf community. I started to understand some of the struggles they are faced with each day.”

UABC’s deaf ministry has looked different over the years, but the overall purpose has remained the same: To love and serve the deaf community where they are so they can come to know and trust in the Hope of Jesus. “One woman visited our church after she attended a Saturday picnic hosted by our ministry. Our Sunday School lesson was about God’s judgment. At the end of the lesson, I asked if anyone had any questions. She asked, ‘Is God friendly?’ I realized I didn’t really express God’s loving-kindness in the lesson, because we were talking about how the Israelites had strayed away from God. So this opened a door for me to talk about God sending Jesus into the world. I told her God loves us so much that He sent His one and only Son. I asked her if she had heard the story of Jesus and she told me she had not. She then said it was the first time she had ever been to a church.” Grace shared, “This encounter helped me understand that the deaf really do need to hear about the Lord—it is a matter of helping them become curious about God. This is my passion: to help members of the deaf community know there is a God who loves them, has a plan for them, and wants them to have a meaningful life.”

UABC’s deaf ministry will partner with New Hope’s deaf ministry and Hawaii Church for the Deaf in offering the Deaf Family Conference on November 11-13 at UABC. The Deaf Family Conference will focus on relationships--one’s relationship with God and their relationships with others.

UABC is filled with individuals who have deep passions. Grace Poei is passionate about loving and serving the deaf community. Read some of

her story and hear a little of her heart for this ministry below:
