Oral Ulcerations Apthous ulcers 4 Single, multiple, recurrent, well circumscribed ulcers. 4 Whitish pseudomembrane surrounded by an erythematous halo. 4 Usually limited to mucosa of the soft palate, buccal mucosa, tongue and tonsillar area. Atypical ulcers 4 May appear in any location on the oral mucosa. 4 Usually deep, crater-like & covered by fibrin. Linear Gingival Erythema 4 A distinct fiery red band along the margin of the gums. 4 Amount of erythema is disproportionately intense for the amount of plaque seen. 4 No ulceration is present and there is no evidence of pocketing or attachment loss. Periodontal (Gum) Conditions Necrotising (ulcerative) Gingivitis 4 Destruction of one or more inter-dental papillae. 4 Bleeding, ulceration, necrosis and sloughing. 4 Tissue destruction limited to gingival tissues & does not involve alveolar bone. Necrotising (ulcerative) Periodontitis 4 Advanced necrotic destruction of periodontium. 4 Rapid loss of periodontal attachment; destru c t i o n or sequestration of bone, teeth may become loose. 4 Severe pain & bad breath may be prominent. Parotid Enlargement 4 Unilateral or bilateral diffuse, soft swelling of the parotid salivary glands. 4 Often causes dry mouth (xerostomia). 4 May be accompanied by pain.
