Oral Ulcerations
Apthous ulcers
4 Single, multiple, re c u rrent, well circ u m s c r i b e du l c e r s .
4 Whitish pseudomembrane surrounded by anerythematous halo.
4 Usually limited to mucosa of the soft palate,buccal mucosa, tongue and tonsillar area.
Atypical ulcers
4 May appear in any location on the oral mucosa.
4 Usually deep, crater-like & covered by fibrin.
Linear Gingival Erythema
4 A distinct fiery red band along the margin ofthe gums.
4 Amount of erythema is disproportionatelyintense for the amount of plaque seen.
4 No ulceration is present and there is no evidence of pocketing or attachment loss.
Periodontal (Gum) Conditions
N e c rotising (ulcerative) Gingivitis
4 D e s t ruction of one or more inter-dental papillae.
4 Bleeding, ulceration, necrosis and sloughing.
4 Tissue destruction limited to gingival tissues& does not involve alveolar bone.
N e c rotising (ulcerative) Periodontitis 4 Advanced necrotic destruction of periodontium.
4 Rapid loss of periodontal attachment; destru c t i o nor sequestration of bone, teeth may become loose.
4 Severe pain & bad breath may be prominent.
Parotid Enlargement
4 Unilateral or bilateral diffuse, soft swellingof the parotid salivary glands.
4 Often causes dry mouth (xerostomia).
4 May be accompanied by pain.
Kaposi’s Sarcoma
4 One or more erythematous, slightly bluishswellings with or without ulcerations.
4 Predominantly seen on the gingiva or thepalate.
