Think about this- English muffins come in packs of 8, and
eggs come in cartons of 12. If there are 24 students, what is the least
number of packs and cartons needed so that each student has a muffin
sandwich with one egg and there are no muffins left over?
3 packs of English Muffins
2 cartoon of eggs
When we find the smallest amount that both 8 and 12 go into evenly, we are finding the LCM
The smallest number that is a multiple of two or more
numbers is the least common
multiple (LCM).
To find the LCM
1. List the multiples of each number
2. Find the smallest (least) multiple that each number
shares
Example: Find the LCM of 8 and 12
Example: Find the LCM of 8 and 12 1. List the multiples of each number
8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48…
12: 12, 24, 36, 48…
2. Find the smallest (least) multiple that each number shares
Example: Find the LCM of 8 and 3
Example: Find the LCM of 8 and 3 1. List the multiples of each number
8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48…
3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 21, 24
2. Find the smallest (least) multiple that each number shares
Example: Find the LCM of 5 and 10
Example: Find the LCM of 5 and 10 1. List the multiples of each number
5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30…
10: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50…
2. Find the smallest (least) multiple that each number shares
Example: Find the LCM of 3 and 5
Example: Find the LCM of 3 and 5 1. List the multiples of each number
3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24…
5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30…
2. Find the smallest (least) multiple that each number shares
Example: Find the LCM of 6 and 5
Example: Find the LCM of 6 and 5 1. List the multiples of each number
6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36
5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40…
2. Find the smallest (least) multiple that each number shares
Example: Find the LCM of 9 and 12
Example: Find the LCM of 9 and 12 1. List the multiples of each number
9: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63…
12: 12, 24, 36, 48…
2. Find the smallest (least) multiple that each number shares
