Criteria for Standards Fewer, clearer, and higher

Aligned with college and work expectations

Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills

Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards

Internationally benchmarked, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society

Based on evidence and research

Standards

Challenges in ELA Reading

Shifting balance of literary and informational text Elementary – 50/50 Middle – 45/55 High – 30/70

Intentional curricular content integration Increased text complexity

Standards

Challenges in ELA Writing

Increased emphasis on argument and informative/explanatory writing

Writing includes textual references and citations

Standards

Challenges in mathematics Movement of standards to different

grades Rigor Addition of new concepts not in current

standards (especially Algebra I)

Standards

2008 ELA Standard 8-1.2 Explain the effect of point of view on a

given literary text. Sample question

How does the point of view impact the reader?A. The events described are more personal.B. The details are more vividly described.C. The generations are gradually revealed.D. The meaning of patriotism becomes clear.

Standards

Common Core State Standards RL8.6 Analyze how differences in the points of view of the characters and the audience or reader (e.g., created through the use of dramatic irony) create such effects as suspense or humor.

Assessment

Sample questionExplain how the first person point of view in “Compassion and the World” influences the reader’s impression of the author. Use evidence from the passage to support your response.

Standards 2007 Mathematics standard 7-5.2

Apply strategies and formulas to determine the surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes, prism, pyramid, and cylinder.

Sample question given a drawing What is the approximate surface area of the

cylinder?

Page 14: Common Core Standards Student Engagement Conference October 7, 2011

Assessment Sample question

5cm diameter 9cm height

What is the approximate surface area of the cylinder?A. 141.3 cm2

B. 219.8 cm2

C. 298.3 cm2

D. 706.5 cm2

Standards Common Core State Standards 7.G.4 Know the formulas for the area and

circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle.

7.G.6 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two-and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Assessment Sample question You have been asked to design a sports

bag. The length of the bag must be 60 cm. The bag will have circular ends 25 cm in diameter. The main body of the bag will be made from 3 pieces of material; a piece for the curved body, and the two circular end pieces. Each piece will need to have an extra 2 cm all around it for a seam, so that the pieces may be stitched together.

Page 17: Common Core Standards Student Engagement Conference October 7, 2011

Assessment

1. Make a sketch of the pieces you will need to cut out for the body of the bag. Your sketch does not have to be to scale. On your sketch, show all the measurements you will need.

2. You are going to make one of these bags from a roll of cloth 1 meter wide. What is the shortest length that you need to cut from the roll for the bag?

3. Describe, using words and sketches, how you arrive at your answer.
