It’s hard to believe that the summer is almost over already, we have had events just about every weekend, all with spectacular turnouts. This past weekend’s Invitational Regatta was the biggest I seen in years and our guests stayed long into the night enjoying the musical stylings of the duo “How’s My Hat”. Steve, April and all the restaurant staff headed by Chef John presented a great meal for everyone. Sharlene & Gill and all of their volunteers organized a first class event! We now have Wi-Fi (Wireless Internet access) operational at NERYC thanks to Steve Hogan. Installation was done last month on a very hot day by Steve and Steve Dougherty. A little bit still needs to be done as there will be a repeater antenna added to extend the wireless range. This project was funded by Steve Hogan and he expects that folks that want to use the Internet will donate a minimum $25 to get the password to access the system. Donations are being collected by David Andrews or Steve Hogan. There are no monthly costs that you pay to access the internet. All Steve wants to do is recover his costs that came to a little less than $700. Some computers access the NERYC wi-fi signal without problem and some will encounter a need for a slight tweak in their computer’s wireless configuration. Steve Dougherty has followed up with the manufacturer of the equipment and has information to help you get on the system. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. The other day during midweek, we had a member that was called in the early morning and was told his sailboat mooring had broken it’s chain and his boat was on it’s side, located in the rocks and mud just a short distance from the picnic area. When I got there, the owner and his son were preparing lines that would be used soon when the tide changed. Soon the docks had an audience and a large group of helpers. John Miller, Rocco D’Armiento, Kyle Hanson, Bob Efford, myself and many others. Kyle brought over the boom preventer from Majestic Dream and proceeded to hook it to the sailboat main halyard. This block and tackle with it’s 8:1 purchase saved the day. After several hours, the boat was dragged away sideways from the picnic area, up righted and berthed to the inside of ‘A’ dock. Thanks everybody for coming to the aid of another member, you are what makes this club special. The boat name is “Scrappy” and there may be a new name soon, “Jinx”. Our Insurance Chair, Bob Efford, has been extremely vigilant in making sure that all boats in the marina have up to date insurance. Bob is in the Club offices 1-2 hours every week doing a great job making sure our Club is insurance compliant. He asks that when your policy is renewed, that you please send a copy to NERYC for purposes of updating the files. This saves him the unpleasant task of sending out insurance non-compliance e-mails. The dockside water pump, used for watering lawns and gardens, was repaired last week and is now working in top form. Thanks to Tom, the Club handyman, for making the repairs. The NERYC Invitational Race organizers and their respective committees deserve our thanks, for putting on one of the best race and post-race events in years. Where did this mysterious force called “wind” come from? I think we also set a new record of 219 people at the post-race picnic. Remember; don’t hesitate to thank our volunteers for a job well done. Thanks Gill and Sharlene for putting on a great event.

The Live Auction/Crab Feast is

well on its way with a great evening planned. The membership will be looking at the changes in the by-laws earlier in the afternoon, so please stay around for a great buffet with crabs and a lively auction. Lady Linda has circulated questioners asking the members to donate a service to be sold by the auctioneer. After much con-sternation and discussion, I have opened the auction to the ladies and gentlemen of the club that want to help with Capital Improvements and the general welfare of our group. As you give from your heart as well as your pocketbooks, please remember we are trying to beef up our funds for capital items. The board has agreed to al-low ALL proceeds from the Auction to go to the Capital Improvements fund to help fund long-term improve-ments to the Building and Grounds. We hope this event will make enough money to offset the need for any as-sessments this year. We have a live Auctioneer who will be auctioning off the services of any member of the club at the first annual “Honey-Do Auction”. The team is asking the members of the club to volunteer a specialty service to be auc-tioned off to the highest bidder. We hope the event will be great fun and that members can get some service for their generosity to NERYC. Services can include such things as detailing cars, yard work, cooking meals, ac-counting services, computer services, legal work, sailing lessons, boating lessons, art lessons- you name it. What ever will make for a fun and profitable evening. We re-quest that you bring appropriate props to represent your donated service and add some fun to the process. We look forward to your ideas to make this a hilarious and rewarding evening. Please contact Linda Hughes @ 410-287-2479 or [email protected] to let her know what your donation will be.

Thanks to all members participating in the NERYC cruise program as we con-tinue to have record turnouts with many new members venturing out with us. The hos-pitality offered by Baltimore Yacht Club was more then expected with reciprocat-ing slip fees and a great pavilion for our cocktail party. I want to advise out members the reciprocating fee is available any-time you choose to visit not only when we cruise there as a group. What a nice cruise destination to return to for a relax-ing weekend. By the time you read this waterline, we will have cruised to Maryland Yacht Club with 16 boats pre-registered and as usual more show up for the fun... Thanks to Steve Hogan for organizing slip assignments with MYC. Did Steve bring out the Bermuda Triangles? The Labor Day Cruise to Sailing Emporium from 8/29-9/1 featuring the Commodore’s Cocktail Party with DJ Bob Cross providing music for listening as well as karaoke singing is fast approaching. The cocktail party will be Saturday, August 30 beginning at 4 pm. Please bring a dish to share with fellow members. We have filled out 20 slips reserved at Sailing Em-porium Marina and can only add to our list should we have a cancellation. I encourage members to inquire at other marinas in Rock Hall for a slip assignment. There is a trolley that trav-els around the town and stops at all marinas for pick up and return. There is also an anchorage area in Swan Creek should “gunk holing” interest you. Please support our Commodore Lisa Mack and join us in showing our appreciation for all the time and hard work she faithfully contributes to NERYC and keeps our club the best on the Chesapeake. Thanks again to all members for signing up for OOD service. A special thanks to Darlene Hamlin and Dave Hollenbaugh for last minute OOD service to our NERYC Invitational partici-pants.

FROM THE FLEET By-Laws Committee

MEETING UPDATE

The 2008 By-laws Committee has decided to remove the Board responsibilities from the By-laws and put them into a separate document in order to make the By-laws document less cumbersome. Months of work has been done to achieve this goal. At the July Board meeting the BOG approved the recommendations for the 2008 By-laws as well as the BOG Manual. On Saturday August 23 starting at 2:00 PM there will be a meeting at the club to discuss these changes with the membership so they can understand why this decision was made. You will be receiving by e-mail a copy of the 2008 changes to the By-laws along with the draft to the BOG Responsibilities Manual within the next week. If you do not have e-mail and would like a copy to review, please contact the club office and one will be sent to you in the mail. This is not the formal notification that is usually sent out prior to the October Annual Meeting. If for some reason you can not attend the meeting and would like to voice your comments please contact me either by e-mail ([email protected]) or call me at home after 6:00 PM. My number is (410) 287-6003. We are having this meeting to get membership feed back before we finalize the documents for the Annual Meeting. It is our intention to split the documents and an understanding of how the member-ship feels is very important to us. Most of the committee will be there to answer any questions or to address comments. Please plan to join us to voice your opinions.

The summer months are sizzling with lots of events past and up-coming at the NERYC and going by way to fast. Where to begin? Even with the fleet on the bay our July birthday/anniversary night was well attended and we also discovered our very own American Idol. Gail Gwiazdoski was our fea-tured karaoke singer of the night. Gail’s appearance and performance were stunning as she rocked the house with her vocals while accompanied by Rik Taylor on the guitar. We also enjoyed our restaurant chair Steve singing “Wild Thing” accompanied by our friend Jeannie Hess. This night gave us our theme for our August Birthday/Anniversary night. But first our 50/50 drawing went to one of our life members Art Weaton, congratulation Art! This is the second month in a row that the 50/50 has rewarded a mem-ber with over 50 dollars. Now we will promote our August Birthday/Anniversary night. As a result of the overwhelming response from last month’s performance, we will host an American Idol type competition on August 8th. All participating singers will receive a partici-pant gift and the overall winner will receive a mone-tary award. If you sing or know someone with talent come out on the August 8th to enjoy and vote for your favorite singer. The audience vote will deter-mine the winner. Call your friends! Next on our calendar is the “Honey –Do” auction and crab feast August 23rd, this requires member participation. Any service will be much appreciated. Please contact Linda Hughes. John Sheldrake will be our MC/auctioneer. Thanks to all who support our events and we are looking forward to seeing everyone during August at the club.

WOW!! The NERYC Invitational Sail Race, the premier sail race event of the season, was held on Saturday, July 26th and was a huge success! The Wind: After having to cancel last year’s race due to no wind, we were hoping to have a better result this year, and we did! With winds ranging from 8-18 knots, there was plenty to fill the sails of all. The Entries: A record breaking number of entries, represent-ing 6 upper bay sailing organizations (NERYC, Havre de Grace YC, Georgetown Racing Fleet, Glenmar Sailing Asso-ciation, Chesapeake Multihull Association and Hance’s Point YC) resulted in a record 42 boats competing in 6 fleets. The Race Committee: We were fortunate to obtain the ser-vices of a race official from Fishing Bay Yacht Club who has officiated many races in down the Bay. Brooks Zerkel trav-eled from Deltaville, Virginia to assist Justine Roecker our NERYC race official and Sue Hanson our timer. Addition-ally, the race committee boat was graciously sponsored by one of our member, Tim DeHaan of B & E Marine along with crew. We also had Doug Cain’s Parker for John Miller and John Molter to run around in as the mark/chase boat. The Race: Three different courses were posted for the fleets ranging in length from 7.99 miles for the Cruising class, 11.21 miles for the PHRF fleets and 15.98 for the Multihulls. The Marina: Our docks were up to the challenge and easily accommodated 8 visiting boats and if the rave reviews are anything to go by, we anticipate many more boats requesting dockage next year. The Post Race Party: CBYRA has reported that the word on the water is that our party ‘ROCKED’! A fabulous buffet dinner of grilled chicken and ribs was served to over 220 hungry sailors, family and NERYC members. Free beer was included with the dinner price, but the rum tent offering half price drinks was also a big hit. No party is ever complete without music. The live band, played well into the night and was enjoyed by all. Thanks you to our sponsors: West Marine, Harken, and Re-Sails Annapolis, Whitford Land Transfer (Bruce Taylor), Sew Nautical (Sharlene Wilkins), and Walden Rigging (Dobbs & Suzanne Fryburger), who graciously pro-vided generous cash donations that helped defray event ex-penses, as well as fabulous door prizes for our lucky draw and freebies for our skipper’s bags. The Awards: Sail race awards were given out for 1st thru 3rd in each class (see results). Additionally, special awards were given for other outstanding accomplishments. All visiting boats docked at our marina were given our cherished Compass

FROM THE RACE COURSE Award for navigating up the NE River to join us. The Race Committee was also given Compass Awards for their contri-butions in the direction of the race. The “BIG MISTAKE ERASER” award was given to Frank Wile for running aground and unfortunately having to withdraw from the race. The THANK YOUS: There is only one place to start and that is with Sharlene Wilkins and her event co-chair Gill Louw. Every detail was extremely well thought out and executed; from securing the sponsors, advertising and marketing the event, obtaining race officials, and planning the party. Addi-tional thanks go out to the Roekers, for housing Brooks for the weekend, the NERYC staff for an outstanding meal, prepara-tion and service at the after race party. For all the volunteers who helped with the t-shirt preparation and sales, Justine Roecker and Micelle Lotter, the Fergusons, Hamlins and Ginny Somers, your efforts are most appreciated. The prob-lem with naming people to thank is that you unintentionally forget someone – so thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success!! It takes a village and we here at NERYC have a great village! Three of our boats that raced in our Invitational were freshly back from their campaigns down in the Southern Bay at the Solomon’s Invitational and Screwpile Regatta. Lottery, Blofish and Cinnamon Girl competed in the overnight delivery race from Annapolis to Solomons on Friday 18th, while Cliff Shaw returned home on Saturday, the crews of Lottery and Blofish remained to take part in their respective one design series at the Screwpile Regatta. Everyone reported good wind, exciting racing and a fun time at all the after race parties. Next up on the NERYC Race Calendar. The weekend of August 1st will see many of our sailors and boats competing in the Governor’s Cup; a 70 mile overnight race from Annapolis, MD to St. Mary’s, MD and the GRF Bay Jam is scheduled for August 16th out on the Bay. Our Thursday night race series continues through the month of August on the 7th, 14th and 21st, and our Fall Series will start on August 23rd. See the complete sail race calendar on our website. Enter for a single race, or for the entire series. We had 22 NERYC boats com-peting in the Invitational, come out and continue the fun and support our sail racing programs! And one more time….THANK YOU Sharlene!!, The NERYC Invitational is now officially on the map of great Upper Bay sailing events and we look forward to raising the bar yet again next year

Our junior sailing instructors have had a busy summer so far. Brad Eckman, Bryan Whittington, Shannon Wilkins and Kyle Hanson taught over 32 kids how to sail at the Junior Sail Camp and they are now busy teaching a few Special Olympics kids. Due to the success of the first camp we will be running a second Junior Sail Camp the week of August 11th. Many club members have been of special help this year by donating time, boats and even money. This year’s volunteers included the Roeckers, Millers, Eckman’s, Sharlene Wilkins, Mark Lord, Todd McCormick, John Molter, April Shaw and if I forgot anyone, please know I thank you for all your help and time to the camp. Larry Lemasters was kind enough to donate to the program a small day sailor. With a little elbow grease, we will add it to our fleet of boats along side the holder 14 and old sunfishes. Thank you, Larry. We are starting to attract a number of non club members to the program. This year over 50% of the camp attendees were non members. This year’s attendance is just the beginning of what this junior pro-gram can be. If we can get few more boat donations and have the club invest in a small fleet of boats suitable for the program we can turn this into a fantastic program to attract new families into the club. The Special Olympic training program was the idea of Steve Dougherty. Steve approached me with the idea and we decided to give it a try. So far we have had 2 kids attend and have had a great time teaching them how to sail. The junior instructors are having a great time teaching them and it’s a great learning experience. Please continue to support the Junior Sailing Program and urge your board members to support the program as well. We need a decent fleet of boats to keep the pro-gram alive. Donations of cash and well maintained boats are gladly accepted. If you have kids, grandchildren or friends interested in the August program please email me at [email protected] Thanks.

A humid and hearty hello and (sadly) adieu to all our wonderful members. New work responsibilities (a promotion) have prompted me to resign from the BOG as membership chair. I have so enjoyed getting to know our new members and I hope to continue to see you all at the club. As Regina Leigh takes over my job, I know everyone will enjoy her friendly enthusiasm and warm smile. Thanks for everything.

Vanderlyn Downing

Greetings I hope that everyone is enjoying the Bay and all the wonderful happenings at NERYC. I’m thankful and excited that Commodore Lisa Mack has chosen me to replace Van as Membership Chair. I have accepted this position with full confidence that I can be an asset to the organi-zation by assisting, strengthening and growing of our current and future members. My first task is the mem-bers’ picnic on Aug 9th, at 1PM. This year we will be holding a scavenger hunt by dinghy instead of the cardboard boat race, so be sure to come out for a day of fun. I look forward to seeing everyone at this event that is in appreciation of the members and all that we do as a team. I’ll see you at the club.

The following dates are not available. July 08 , Nov 27, 08 to March 31, 09 and July 09

Please call (410-287-8968) or see us at the Club for tickets. Even if you can't go, this

makes a wonderful gift for someone you love and you are supporting the NERYC Relay For Life Team. The draw will take place at Relay in Sept. or when all tickets are sold,

whichever comes first.
